Christians “too” Committed to the Bible

Have you ever read such an ignorant statement?

Read this statement made by Biola University professor J.P. Moreland:

“In the actual practices of the Evangelical community in North America, there is an over-commitment to Scripture in a way that is false, irrational, and harmful to the cause of Christ,” he [Moreland] said. “And it has produced a mean-spiritedness among the over-committed that is a grotesque and often ignorant distortion of discipleship unto the Lord Jesus.” The problem, he said, is “the idea that the Bible is the sole source of knowledge of God, morality, and a host of related important items. Accordingly, the Bible is taken to be the sole authority for faith and practice.”

Yemi i don’t see how ANY Christian could make such ignorant remarks about the Word of God…do you?

What i also find some-what “schizophrenic” about the claim that Evangelicals are overly-committed to the Bible (which is crazy–how can one be too committed to God’s Word?) is the fact that the greater majority of Christian Evangelicals today in America are basically ‘biblically illiterate’ according to the polls!

Although thinking on it… why was such a pledge even necessary?

    Read the news article…

Pastors sign online pledge to use God’s Word as primary source for sermons

A website that provides access to sermons and illustrations has launched a campaign encouraging pastors to pledge that they will develop their own material through the reading and study of scripture.

AHA! I know its not funny, but for crying out loud, what have they BEEN using?

Never mind, i have a pretty good idea. I know Rick Warren use to [maybe still does] send out his latest sermon to the pastors who sign up with him…encouraging them to preach HIS SERMON the following Sunday…

In one church i attended for awhile, we found out the pastor was preaching Rod Parsley’s “latest” from TBN every week.

Its a sad situation when pastors have to pledge to use the Word of God to get their own messages.
