WICHITA, Kansas — Dr. George Tiller, a Kansas doctor whose clinic received national attention for performing late-term abortions, was shot to death at his Wichita church on Sunday.
“Members of the congregation who were inside the sanctuary at the time of the shooting were being kept inside the church by police,” the Wichita Eagle reported, “and those arriving were being ushered into the parking lot.”
Media reports said the suspected killer fled the scene in a blue Taurus. Police described him as a white male in his 50s or 60s.
Tiller has been among the few U.S. physicians performing late-term abortion, making him a favored target of anti-abortion protesters. He testified that he and his family have suffered years of harassment and threats. His clinic was the site of the 1991 “Summer of Mercy” protests marked by mass demonstrations and arrests. His clinic was bombed in 1985, and an abortion opponent shot him in both arms in 1993.

That doctor will now face God. I have extreme difficulty believing anyone could be in Christ and see nothing wrong slaightering babies.
That said, I have extreme difficulty believing anyone could be in Christ and take it upon themselves to execute fatal judgement against anyone. Vengeance is the Lord’s, not ours. We do not repay evil with evil, but evil with good, as our Master commanded.
This is very sad, and will further add to the already palpable hatred of christians. I do not know if the killer claims to be an alleged christian but that will not matter. It happened in a ‘church’, ergo, christians are hate-filled killers and vigilantes.
Be prepared, people. It’s going to start costing more and more to truly proclaim Christ in the West as it has for other brethren worlwide for a long time. This is where God refines us through fire as one does silver to remove the dross. We know those who fall away were the stony ground the Lord spoke of in the parable of the seeds, that had no root, and when the sun (persecution) came, it withered. If you are truly His, you will be hated for His sake. But be of good cheer, He has overcome the world!
Amen, i agree with all you stated Brian.
Having been to paid dinners where the keynote speaker put up on the big screen for all to see, [while eating a fine meal], abortions at all stages and still photos of aborted babies…. I found President Obama’s remarks regarding the murder of the doctor quite ironic!:::>
President Barack Obama expressed shock and outrage, saying in a statement, “However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.”
I just cannot get my head around that quote!
Now I am not in favor of overcoming such violence with more violence. No, in no way am I for that.
Rom 12:19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
Rom 12:20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Rom 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Somehow the Church needs to find a way to move the Heart of God to eliminate this evil with His Goodness in this cursed society!
It is my prayer that He would so fill my heart with His Wisdom. at least, to begin speaking the “Word of the Lord” with regard for this matter as with all other sorts of evil running amuk in the world until Righteousness brings this Gospel of the Kingdom to all nations for a witness and then the end shall come!
Mat 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Michael i don’t think we can expect the President to see the issue of abortion like we do. We come at it from the bible and he, and many others, don’t.
I can agree with the gist of his statement:
“However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.”
Violent acts beget further Violent acts–and its never the answer.
Maybe this was already said. But abortion IS a heinous act of violence! Of course, as you said, PJ, we can’t expect the Pres to see it that way, knowing what his beliefs are.
And as also already said, it’s up to God to repay vengence not, people. Unfortunately, this will get blamed on “right wing extremists” which almost always get lumped in with “Christian”.
What a sad story. I hope it wasn’t some whack job { I will not call anybody who would do this a Christian } but I get that queasy feeling some one doing ” God’s will” probably pulled the trigger.
What this man did was nothing short of condoned murder, but vengeance is always the Lords, we need to let Him repay for what these doctors do. Now the media will make him a martyr, and again we may end up looking like crazies again. But the price for that will be heavier this time.
May we all pray for God’s mercy for all involved from those that pulled the trigger to Dr. Tiller’s family.
Yes, sadly that may be true Gary.
I read comments on various news site earlier today in which the commenters believe this justifies Nepolitano including radical right-wing groups in her listing of dangerous groups in the US.
Nothing good will come out of this doc. murder, you can believe that.
A few updates…
Scott Roeder Held As “Person Of Interest” In Probe Of Dr. George Tiller’s Murder
The man detained by Kansas police as a “person of interest” in their probe of the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller has been identified as Scott Roeder.
Johnson County Sheriff’s deputies stopped Scott Roeder on I-35 between the two main Gardner exits around 1:30 p.m. He surrendered without incident.
In 2007, someone named Scott Roeder posted the following on the Website of anti-abortion group Operation Rescue:
“Bless everyone for attending and praying in May to bring justice to Tiller and the closing of his death camp. Sometime soon, would it be feasible to organize as many people as possible to attend Tillers church (inside, not just outside) to have much more of a presence and possibly ask questions of the Pastor, Deacons, Elders and members while there? Doesn’t seem like it would hurt anything but bring more attention to Tiller.”

Randall Terry, Operation Rescue Founder, Says He’s More Concerned About Obama’s Reaction Than Tiller’s Murder
Randall Terry, the founder of anti-abortion group Operation Rescue who led protests against George Tiller’s clinic in Wichita, Kansas in 1991, issued a statement about today’s killing of the abortion doctor.
In his comments, Terry does not grieve for Tiller or denounce the murder but seems more concerned about President Obama’s reaction and what it bodes for the pro-life movement.

Prominent abortion provider murdered
While many anti-abortion leaders swiftly issued statements condemning the shooting, their expressions of dismay were not echoed by Randall Terry, a veteran anti-abortion activist whose protests have often targeted Tiller.
“George Tiller was a mass murderer and we cannot stop saying that,” Terry said. “He was an evil man — his hands were covered with blood.”

40 Days for Life Denounces Slaying of Abortion Provider George Tiller
David Bereit, National Director of 40 Days for Life, issued the following statement about the slaying of George Tiller at a Wichita, Kansas church:
“As a nationwide organization dedicated to peaceful and prayerful solutions to the crisis of abortion, 40 Days for Life is shocked and dismayed by the shooting death of Kansas abortion provider George Tiller. Such violence against a fellow human being is never justified, and 40 Days for Life condemns this senseless act. We encourage people of faith to join in prayer for all those affected by this unconscionable action.”

The following is a statement from Shaun Kenney, executive director of American Life League, on the killing of abortionist George Tiller.
“Leaders within the pro-life movement often discuss justice in connection with our mission to end the tragedy of abortion. Today, Dr. George Tiller’s life ended in an act defying those principles.
With genuine sorrow, we reflect on today’s events in prayer. Justice for all human beings includes the lives of those with whom we fundamentally disagree as well as the victims of abortion. We firmly hope the perpetrators of this act are apprehended, that the facts be made known, and that justice according to the law is preserved and dispensed.
Today’s actions were tragic, and serve as another reminder that all human life is sacred. Pro-lifers by our nature and commitment to human rights reject violence as a means of resistance. Our thoughts and prayers indeed extend to the Tiller family and the community at Reformation Lutheran Church.”
