The results of a seared conscience: abortion parties


A better title for this would be,  ‘Why we need to preach the Gospel”

…when the conscience is insensitive to sin, it is “seared” (1 Tim. 4:2). This means that the conscience is not able to distinguish between right and wrong. In other words, the person with a seared conscience sins and does not know they sin. Thus their sinful conscience is “defiled” (Titus 1:15) or “evil” (Heb. 10:22) – (Ken Walker, The Seared, Defiled or Weak Conscience.)

Abortion Parties? – When Abortion Becomes a Lark

Despite the fact that throughout the West abortions continue to take place by the tens of thousands, abortion is still generally portrayed as a grave issue, not to be taken lightly, a difficult decision.  Hilary Clinton herself has described abortion as a “sad, even tragic choice to many, many women.”

For some, however, it seems that abortion is just another reason to throw a party.

In a recent article published on AlterNet, ‘My First Abortion Party’, writer Byard Duncan relates his experience of attending a party thrown by his friend ‘Maggie’ so as to raise funds to pay for her abortion.

Duncan describes walking into the party, being “bludgeoned with a blast of hot air, followed by the tangy stink of dance floor revelry.”

“Someone had taken a red bed sheet and hung it below a light fixture to resemble a giant womb,” he says.  “Every so often, a dancer’s head or arm or dreadlock would brush against one of its smooth folds, creating a rippling effect.”

A self-described “ardent pro-choicer,” Duncan nonetheless says he felt uncomfortable with the whole affair.  “When I got the invite to a friend’s abortion party, I thought it was a way to help her through a difficult decision,” he says.  “I was right and wrong.”

The party, ironically, was ‘family-friendly,’ he says.  After arriving, Duncan “struck up a conversation with Andrew (name changed), the three-year-old son of one of the partygoers.”

Uncomfortable by the presence of a young child, he acknowledges the contradiction of a young child participating in the celebration of the murder of another young child.  “Even though I thought the presence of a young child at an abortion party was a little bizarre,” he says, “nobody else seemed to acknowledge (or care about) this contradiction.”..

  2. For the record … I’d agree that this is what Sodom looked like. Casual revelry at sin, and no one notices or cares about the contradictions.

    This is sickening …

  3. Though its been many years since leaving that life behind it reminded me of what we use to call ‘rent parties’. Someone would not be able to come up with that months rent, so would hold a poker-party in which a certain % of every pot went into the rent-kitty bowl.

    Looks like a lot’s changed since then…sigh..

    I really felt to include 1 Corinthians 6 at the end, for its true that, “And such were some of you….”

    If the Holy Spirit had not drawn us to Christ, and we had not answered the call, we too could be attending such “parties” today.

    The lost need the Gospel desperately–the life-changing Gospel, not some weak water-downed example that will never lead to a changed heart.
