Christian Militia Among Targets Of FBI Raids

This was news in my part of the country today.

ADRIAN, Mich. — The FBI said Sunday that agents conducted weekend raids in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio and arrested at least three people, and a militia leader in Michigan said the target of at least one raid was a Christian militia group.

FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold confirmed the FBI had been working in two southeast Michigan counties near the Ohio state line. FBI spokesman Scott Wilson in Cleveland said agents arrested two people Saturday after raids in two Ohio towns.

A third arrest made in northeast Illinois on Sunday stemmed from a raid Saturday just over the border in northwest Indiana, both part of an ongoing investigation led by the FBI in Michigan, according to a statement from agents in Illinois.

It wasn’t clear what prompted the raids, but Michael Lackomar, a spokesman for the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia, said one of his team leaders got a frantic phone call Saturday evening from members of Hutaree, a Christian militia group. They said their property in southwest Michigan was being raided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to Lackomar.

“They said they were under attack by the ATF and wanted a place to hide,” Lackomar said. “My team leader said, ‘no thanks.’”

The team leader was cooperating with the FBI, Lackomar said. He said SMVM wasn’t affiliated with Hutaree, but a handful of Hutaree members twice attended monthly training sessions with his group that focus on survival training and shooting practice.  (full story)

I’m not familiar with the Hutaree Christian Militia so did a small search. It appears they are a part of something known as the Colonial Christian Republic, with chapters elsewhere. The Hutaree group have a channel at youtube, (Hutaree).

About:  HUTAREE – Christian Warrior

a few quotes…

As christians we all are a part of the Souls of the Body of Christ, the one true church of Christ. Not any specific man made building or any man controlled organization. This is the belief of the Hutaree soldier, as should the belief of all followers in Christ be.We believe that one day, as prophecy says, there will be an Anti-Christ. All christians must know this and prepare, just as Christ commanded. Luke 22:35-37, And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?” So they said, “Nothing.” 36, Then he said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37, “For I say to you that this which is written must be accomplished in me: ‘And He was numbered with transgressors,’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”

This clearly states the reason for the training and preparation of the Hutaree. (link)

A few of the links listed on their page, “Just some of the various information sources we use” are interesting.

  1. Some of the links are interesting indeed. They include a Christian Apologetics site, the Jerusalem Post, and “end times”-related site (Jack Van Impe) and good ol’ World Net Daily. On their main page (right side) I noticed that they link to Voice of the Martyrs, an organization I deeply respect. It’s really a hodge-podge of influences.

Watch out if anyone goes to the Forums (public section). I quickly left, as lots of people are spamming them with highly inappropriate, offensive and irrelevant language.

This is not only interesting news, but I wonder if some Conservative groups will interpret this as “Big Brother is cracking down–they came after these guys first, and we might be next because we spoke out against healthcare, etc.”

Adam, it started almost immediately on the internet. After today, when more of the story has been released, those who jumped on the big-brother bandwagon may change their mind.

  2. There’s a member of the Michigan Militia on one of the web boards that I follow. They didn’t want anything to do with these guys.

I was also struck by the links on the info sources page. Those links that are live are a very mixed bag. One to a Worldwide Church of God (Herbert W. Armstong’s cult) spinoff, Jack Van Impe, WeirdNetDaily, etc. The “christian apologic” site is a one man show by one Dan Corner, of whom the kindest thing to be said is that he is “a character”. An obsessed anti-calvinist.

Where this fits in the bigger picture, I hesitate to speculate.

    • Yes, i read Lee that another group [when contacted for help] wanted nothing to do with this.

The links are sure a mixed-bag. All i needed to see was World net Daily, or as u correctly referred to it as “weirdnetdaily”, to have an idea where these folks were coming from.

  3. There is more information coming out today:

DETROIT — Nine suspects tied to a Christian militia that was preparing for the Antichrist were charged with conspiring to kill police officers, then kill scores more by attacking a funeral using homemade bombs, federal prosecutors said Monday.

The Michigan-based group, called Hutaree, planned to use the attack on police as a catalyst for a larger uprising against the government, according to newly unsealed court papers. U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said agents moved quickly on the group because its members were planning a violent mission sometime in April.

Members of the group, including its leader, David Brian Stone, also known as “Captain Hutaree,” were charged following FBI raids over the weekend on locations in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. Seven people were arraigned in Detroit on Monday, and another one of Stone’s sons, Joshua, is being sought.

Stone’s ex-wife, Donna Stone, told The Associated Press before the arraignments that her former husband was to blame for pulling her son into the movement. She said David Brian Stone legally adopted her son, David Brian Stone Jr., who is among those indicted.

“It started out as a Christian thing,” said Donna Stone, 44. “You go to church. You pray. You take care of your family. I think David started to take it a little too far.”

Yes, i read Lee that another group [when contacted for help] wanted nothing to do with this.

That was the Michigan Militia. Two things the MM guy on another forum said were “The Hutaree are NUTS” and “the Hutaree are capable of doing what is alleged.”

The links are sure a mixed-bag. All i needed to see was World net Daily, or as u correctly referred to it as “weirdnetdaily”, to have an idea where these folks were coming from.

Two of the things I look at when I’m trying to figure out where some group is coming from is, what do they say they believe (and I’m finding a distressing number of evangelicals who don’t find it necessary to say anything), and who do they point you to. The Hutaree’s statement of doctrine is a muddle. If it’s jargon, it’s jargon I don’t recognize.Their link page, as pointed out, is another confused muddle.”NUTS” might be the best judgment, though agents provocateur are always a possibility in this kind of thing.(WND is a positive spiritual danger. IMHO, YMMV, Insert standard disclaimer here.)
