Guns in Church? Imagine the Franchise Opportunities

This had me laughing out-loud…though in reality it’s probably not far from the truth; which isn’t funny.

By: Colin Harris (professor of religious studies at Mercer University and a member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain, Ga.)

Proposed “bring your guns to church” legislation, now on the floor in a couple of states, suggests bringing firearms into houses of faith is sure to become a national craze. So any day I expect to read about some new franchise opportunity that’s uniquely poised to be ahead of the marketing curve in one of the most recent trends in church life.

Maybe it’ll be called Shoot Straight for Jesus Ministries Ltd. For a modest initial contribution, the enterprising franchisee would have access and exclusive sales rights to a variety of products sure to be embraced by high caliber churches. Potential franchisees wanting to partner with others and be “duelly aligned” would also be encouraged to apply.

Examples of their product lines would include:

1. “Thy Word Have I Hid Over My Heart” steel-plated, vest-pocket New Testament. Designed to protect this vital organ from damage by enemy fire or accidental friendly fire. Vest itself sold separately.

2. “Put My Law Within Them” Bible bullets. Each bullet engraved with Leviticus 20:13, fulfilling what was spoken by the prophet (Jeremiah 31:33). Guaranteed to make recipient “know the Lord” up close and personal.

3.Pew Rack Adapter Kit. Fits existing hymnal and visitor card holder. Keep your “protection” within reach at all times during the service.

4. WHWJP (What Heat Would Jesus Pack?) bracelets. Includes space for church logo or celebrity endorsements (ask about details).

5. “Sitting Duck” Kevlar pulpit and choir robes. For those most exposed in the sanctuary arena.

6. OK Corral Bible Drill Kit. Replaces previous “sword drill” materials. Includes projectable Bible texts and 12 laser pistols with holsters. Uses screens already in sanctuary!

7. Double holster specially designed for handgun on one side and handbook-size Bible on the other. Right-hand and left-hand versions available.

8. “Putting on the Whole Armor of God.” An interactive paintball experience for older children and youth to develop skills needed later in life. Reduces risk and danger of using actual firearms.

9. “Trigger Treats.” For churches who have chosen not to participate in pagan Halloween festivals. These delectable goodies can be used as prizes at your Shoot Straight for Jesus event in the fall.

10. “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms.” This six-shooter study is designed to encourage commitment to the second amendment to the U.S. Constitution and complete trust in its ability to protect us from the multitudes who would harm us if we didn’t have it.

They are preaching up the devil’s old, favorite doctrine!

There is such a place as hell. Let no one deceive you with vain words. What people do not like–they try hard not to believe.

1) I know that some people do not believe that there is any Hell at all. They think it impossible, that there can be such a place. They call it inconsistent with the mercy of God. They say that it is too awful an idea to be really true. The devil of course, rejoices in the views of such people. They help his kingdom mightily. They are preaching up the devil’s old, favorite doctrine, “You shall not surely die!” Genesis 3:4

2) I know furthermore, that some do not believe that Hell is eternal! They tell us it is incredible, that a compassionate God will punish people forever. They imagine that He will surely open the prison doors of Hell at last. This also is a mighty help to the devil’s cause.

3) I know also that some believe that there is a Hell–but never allow that anybody is going there! They imagine that . . .

  • all people are good,
  • all are sincere,
  • all mean well, and
  • all, they hope, will go to Heaven when they die!

Alas! what a common delusion is this!

If I never spoke of Hell–I would think I had kept back something that was profitable, and would look on myself as an accomplice of the devil.

Reader, I beseech you, in all tender affection–beware of false views of the subject on which I have been dwelling. Beware of new and strange doctrines about Hell and the eternity of punishment. Beware of manufacturing a god of your own:

  • a god who is all mercy–but not just;
  • a god who is all love–but not holy;
  • a god who has a Heaven for everybody–but a Hell for none;
  • a god who will make no distinction between godly and the ungodly in eternity.

Such a god is an idol of your own imagination! It is as truly an idol–as any snake or crocodile in an Egyptian temple! The hands of your own imagination and sentimentality have made it! It is not the God of the Bible–and beside the God of the Bible, there is no God at all.

Dominionism and Extreme American Patriotism

Herescope has posted the link to a very good article by Sarah Leslie which appeared in a recent newsletter: What Is Dominionism?

The article presents 20 Symptoms of Dominionism. One symptom listed is,

Extreme American Patriotism:

• The belief that America is a totally Christian nation under covenant with God like O.T. Israel.

• The belief that restoring America to its status as a “Christian nation” will make society better.

• The belief that by changing external civil laws that peoples’ hearts and lives will somehow be changed.

• A shift in emphasis to changing politicians, laws, ethics, institutions, and culture rather than PREACHING the Gospel to lost sinners.

• Christian activism is substituted for being “salt and light” by preaching the Gospel of Salvation.

• “Standing in the gap” becomes political action.

• Shades of revolution or civil disobedience.

• A serious and fundamental lack of understanding about the biblical role of Church and State in the New Testament era.

• Disallowing the freedom of conscience.

While reading through the points above, particularly “A serious and fundamental lack of understanding about the biblical role of Church and State in the New Testament era”, I thought about a statement made by Sen. Jim DeMint,

“I’m afraid Christians have been intimidated with this idea of separation of church and state — which is not in our Constitution at all — and that maybe their views aren’t welcomed in the public square; that maybe expressing a value judgment about right or wrong is no longer welcomed,” he said. (Jim DeMint: A Modern Day Bonhoeffer)

Notice he says its not “in our constitution” but doesn’t give a flying-fig for the truth which is NOWHERE in the New Testament, will you find  teachings which claim The Church and State (government) should be as “one”.  Perhaps DeMint should actually study the bible’s teachings on the subject before he gives interviews about “the cost he has had to pay for standing on his Christian/Tea Party principles”.

Rick Santorum, “History of the Crusades has been corrupted by the American left who hates Christendom.”

Rick Santorum launched into a scathing attack on the left, charging during an appearance in South Carolina that the history of the Crusades has been corrupted by “the American left who hates Christendom.”

“The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical,” Santorum said in Spartanburg on Tuesday. “And that is what the perception is by the American left who hates Christendom.”

After asserting that Christianity had not shown any “aggression” to the Muslim world, the former Pennsylvania senator — who is considering a 2012 run for the White House — argued that American intervention in the Middle East helps promote “core American values.”

“Glenn Beck can solve the budget deficit”

Some folks are growing nuttier by the day.

quote..

Rep. Michele Bachmann was on a tear: In one of her most fiery stump speeches to date, the tea party leader told a South Carolina audience that the tax code was a “weapon of mass destruction,” that President Obama is “babying” terrorists, that the rich pay too much in taxes, that social issues like marriage and abortion cannot be put on the “back burner,” and that Fox News’ Glenn Beck can solve America’s budget deficit.

“We need to simply tell people the facts, like Glenn Beck, with that chalkboard, that man can explain anything. I think if we give Glenn Beck the numbers, he can solve this.” (Bachmann: Glenn Beck can solve the budget deficit)

Putting Jesus Back in Easter

I have nothing against chocolate eggs, in fact they’re yummy, I love them! Even ‘peeps’ are a favorite. But the idea behind this, ‘Putting Jesus back into Easter’ leaves something to be desired.

quote..

New Easter egg raises money for two charities and mentions Jesus on the box

Church leaders have secured a small victory in their fight against secularism and the marginalisation of Christianity after major supermarkets agreed to stock the UK’s first and only Fairtrade charity Easter egg to mention Jesus on the box.

The Meaningful Chocolate Company says it developed the product with the help of bishops, schools and parents. It adds that of the 80m Easter eggs sold every year, the Real Easter Egg is the only one that explains the Christian understanding of the Easter festival on the box. The packaging tells customers: “Easter is all about cute bunnies, fluffy chicks and eating too much chocolate, right? Well, not quite. We happen to think it’s a bit more meaningful than that. That’s because billions of people all over the world believe that Jesus died on the cross on Good Friday, then rose again three days later … on Easter Sunday. Actually, many believe that chocolate eggs represent the boulder that sealed his tomb.”  Supermarkets agree to stock Christian-themed Easter eggs

Also from the Christian Post’s story,

The Right Rev. Nigel McCulloch, the Bishop of Manchester, launched the project last year and developed the egg through the Meaningful Chocolate Company, but not without initial opposition. Patenting authorities questioned the meaning of Easter in relation to the egg and supermarkets were unsure of how a charity-faith egg would fare in their Easter aisles, despite the 80 million Easter eggs sold in the U.K. each year…

Lawyers were (also) able to argue successfully that a link could in fact be made between Christianity, Easter and chocolate eggs, securing a patent to move the campaign forth.

If you wish to comment on this story, please do so. But don’t go off on a tangent about the “real meaning” of eggs being pagan, etc etc. Heard it many times, as most Christians have, (along with the ‘real meaning’ of the Christmas tree, etc.) My point is only to draw attention to the fact that there surely must be a better way to teach children about the true meaning of the Easter/Passover season, then through a chocolate egg.

(never heard of the chocolate egg representing the boulder which sealed Jesus’ tomb–that’s a new one for me)

Joyce Meyer: The “Gospel” of Self Righteousness & Prosperity

Late last night I read this article at the Christian Post and honestly felt sick by the time I finished it: Joyce Meyer Opens Up about Brother’s Tragic Death

If time permits read it all for yourself; afterward go to Internet Monk and read Chaplain Mike’s opinion: The Bad News of Self-Righteousness

What Joyce Meyer revealed at the C3 Conference frankly reveals more to me about her then it does her deceased brother.

Meyer said she learned about her brother’s death after Los Angeles authorities called her in December, about a week after Christmas, to inform her that they found him dead in an abandoned building in the city. He had been dead 30 days and his body was so badly decomposed that authorities needed his dental records to identify him…

A few days ago, she received his cremated ashes and a few personal effects that included a pocket knife, empty wallet, key chain and broken watch…  ”My personal effects and his personal effects are sadly different. What are your personal effects going to be when your time here is up?”

Ed Young, “Let’s Bring Honor Back to the Ministry”

A certified nut on parade…

quote…

Fellowship Church pastor Ed Young called on church leaders to bring back honor to their ministries and in their lives Wednesday evening at the start of the C3 Conference in Dallas.

The Fellowship Church pastor urged church and ministry leaders to “smell out” dishonor among their members and colleagues and drill into it with inquisition, saying they should “make them fish or cut bait.” “People who are honorable will go to another dimension. Those who aren’t will go somewhere else,” he said. (Ed Young at C3 Conference: Let’s Bring Honor Back)

And this call for honor in ministry is coming from the same guy, who in an attempt to promote his church,  issued a sex challenge to his congregation (and taught from the pulpit, while seated on a bed).

Powerful Interview with Leonard Ravenhill

Leonard Ravenhill (1907–1994)

A. W. TOZER,

Those who know of Leonard Ravenhill recognize in him the religious specialist, the man sent from God to battle the priests of Baal on their own mountain top, to shame the careless priest at the altar, to face the false prophet, and to warn the people who are being led astray by him. Such a man as this is not an easy companion. He insists on being a Christian all the time and everywhere. That marks him out as different. Why do we have men of such fiery swords as Ravenhill? They are sick inside when they see the children of heaven acting like the sons of earth. To such men as these, the church owes a debt too heavy to pay.

PAUL WASHER,

I was introduced to Leonard Ravenhill at the very beginning of my Christian pilgrimage and the impact of his life upon mine remains until this day. He lived as one who dwelt in the shadow of the Almighty and he preached as one sent from God. He knew God’s presence, wore His mantle, bore His burdens, and spoke His truth. He was the rarest of commodities in his day and ours – a man of God.

DAVID WILKERSON,

Leonard Ravenhill was one of the few men I have ever known who was a true prophet.

“Because thine heart was tender”

“Because thine heart was tender…” 2Kings 22:19

What a desirable thing is a tender heart. How earnestly we should aspire after one. And when such has been graciously bestowed upon us, what diligence we should exercise in seeking to preserve the same. The tenderness of Josiah’s heart was precious in the sight of the Lord, and in consequence thereof his prayers were answered, as the remainder of our opening text declares. There is nothing like a tender heart, my reader, for obtaining the ear of the Lord. A tender heart is one which is responsive to the voice of God, and unless we possess this how can we expect Him to hear our calls? A tender heart is the only one which truly honours God, as it is the only one which ensures our growth in grace. How deeply important, then, is the question, Have you, have I, really a tender heart? May we be enabled to answer truthfully.

…it is probable that not a few readers would prefer for us to tell them how a tender heart may be recovered. They are already persuaded of the great excellence of this spiritual treasure….What grieves them is that they are conscious of guilty failure in safeguarding this Divine gift. They are sensible that the fine gold has become dim, that little foxes have spoiled their vines, that their conscience is no longer so sensitive as it once was, that they do not respond so readily to the motions of God’s Spirit; that much hardness now resides in their hearts.

It is sadly true that a tender heart may be lost: not absolutely so, but relatively; not permanently, but temporarily. But sadder still is the fact that many who have suffered this deprivation are unconscious of it. It is with them as it was with Ephraim of old: “Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not; yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not” (Hosea 7:9). They may still attend the means of grace and perform their outward devotions, but their hearts are not in them. They may still be respected by their fellow-Christians and regarded as in a healthy spiritual state, while in reality they are backsliders. Sights from which they once shrank appall them no longer. Things which used to exercise their conscience do so no more.

Said the Apostle to the Galatians, “Ye did run well, who (or “what”) hath hindered you?” (5:7). What are the things which destroy tenderness of heart? Ungodly companions is one. Satan will tell the young Christian that he or she may keep old friends and suffer no loss, but God says, “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Cor. 15:33). Friendship with worldlings will soon have a paralyzing influence upon true spirituality. Prayerlessness is another thing which speedily affects the heart. Unless a close fellowship with God be maintained—and that is impossible if the Throne of Grace is neglected—coldness and hardness will soon steal upon us. Equally so will a neglect of the Word. This will not necessarily mean the omission of reading so many chapters each day, but the absence of actually communing with God therein. The spirit of hypocrisy, pretending to be what we are not, hardens—for guile and tenderness are incompatible.

Yes, a tender heart may be lost, as truly as first love may be left (Rev. 2:4). Can it be regained? Yes, though not as easily as it may be hardened. How? First, by warming afresh at the fire of God’s love. This is ever the most effectual means of removing hardness of heart.

What was it that melted and broke you down at your first conversion? Was it not a sense of the Divine grace and a sight of Christ’s dying love? And nothing is so calculated to soften the backslider: it is “the goodness of God” which leads to repentance (Rom. 2:4).

What was before David when he commenced his contrite confession? This: the Lord’s “lovingkindness” and the “multitude of His tender mercies” (Psa. 51:1).

When was it that Peter went out and wept bitterly? Was it not when the Saviour “turned and looked upon him” (Luke 22:61)? Was it not the sorrow which Peter saw in that look—a sorrow which issued from love for him—which broke his heart?! The Lord had given him every proof that he was dear unto Him, and how had Peter requited that love? And has not the Lord given you, my brother, my sister, abundant evidence that you are precious in His sight? Did He deem any sacrifice too great to make atonement for your sins? Has He not favoured you above millions of your fellows in bringing you to a saving knowledge of the Truth? Has He not bestowed the Holy Spirit upon you? Has He not borne with your dullness with infinite patience? Can you dwell upon these things with unmoved heart? Surely not. Seek unto Him, then, and your coldness and hardness will indeed be thawed.

The Religious Humanism of the Modern Evangelical Church

After stumbling upon this some time ago and bookmarking it, my plan was to return in a day or two and take the time to read it all.  And you know what they say about the ‘best laid plans’….

Anyway, I ‘re-discovered’ the bookmark tonight so hopefully I can finally read through it and (also) tackle a second website which has listed some of the author’s writings: they may or may not be the same (in content).

The author is Philip Livingstone, who frankly, I know little about:

Biographical Information

Born in 1962, Philip Livingstone embarked upon his career as a commercial photographer in 1980, before serving as a military photographer from 1984 to 1988. On returning to civilian life, from the sheltered world of military living, he was appalled at the open displays of immorality on television, music, and film industries, and was deeply shocked by the profanity coming from the mouths of children and parents alike, when walking along the public streets. But it was in seeking a church home, that he was most deeply affected. “Christianity” had become “convenient”. Churches had degenerated into nothing more than entertaining social centres. And the modern “Christian” was completely and willfully, ignorant of Biblical doctrine. The Received Text Bible of the historic Protestant Faith, had been discarded in favour of a half dozen modernised, easy-reading, Bible per-versions. The great hymns of faith had been replaced by flighty, superficial “choruses”; and “Jesus” was reduced to the level of a doting “friend”.

In 1989, Livingstone and his wife moved to Vancouver where he began to serve as an itinerant preacher. Having been challenged several times by various modernist pastors who ridiculed him for his lack of “formal training”, at the age of 32, Livingstone embarked upon studies at the most conservative theological college and seminary in the area, ultimately obtaining a Bachelor’s degree. He was now able to speak to the apostates on their own level, with a far greater understanding of the extent of modernism inherent in contemporary theological “education”.

Livingstone’s efforts cumulated in utter failure when, in 2001, he was informed that he would be unwelcome as a pastor, because he used the Authorised (King James) Bible.

This site is intended to serve as an introduction to the writer, whose refusal to compromise Biblical standards, has resulted in a life without friends, a church to worship in, or opportunity to continue the preaching ministry that he lived for. The site itself provides the necessary information needed to contrast New Testament Christianity with the modern counterfeit, and is made available to encourage those who despair at the state of the modern church; and also, to educate others who are caught up in the contemporary nothingness of modern “Christianity”.

“He is currently working on a doctoral dissertation, “The Incompatibility Of Contemporary Theology With Biblical Christianity.” , which addresses the matter of that great Abomination that has made desolate, the New Testament Church.”  (The Forgotten Bible)

The above (bio) was last revised in 2001; and as a work in progress is mentioned, I’m wondering if this dissertation, The Religious Humanism of the Modern Evangelical Church, is the work mentioned.

A few introductory quotes from from the author on the index page:

The following dissertation comes as the result of tremendous sadness … It has, certainly for the past thirty years, broken my heart to see, and to hear, the dishonour and degradation that is done to the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, by those who claim to follow him. Religious hypocrites ridicule the godly for they despise what they cannot imitate. The example of godly men and women sticks like a thorn in the conscience of the hypocrite … but to be like them would involve giving up too much – loud, worldly conversation, a feel-good mindset, and social-club “Christianity”.

To multitudes over the past seven years, this dissertation is seen as “fanatical”, “legalistic”, and “out of touch with the modern world”. The writer is regarded as “narrow-minded”. He is. But he is accompanied by other “narrow-minded” souls throughout the world, who strive (with frequent failings and miscarriages) to walk a “Narrow Way” out of love and respect to their Master, the Lord Jesus Christ. This dissertation endeavours to explain why a few people in the world, are so hopelessly “out of touch” with the religious masses of popular evangelicalism.

In the eyes of the general public, God-fearing men and women are equated with the blustering arrogance and bullying antics of what is commonly regarded as “American Fundamentalism”; and the feel-good frothiness of popular Pentecostalism. It is hoped that this paper will demonstrate that Biblical Christianity, and what has passed for Evangelical Christianity over the past forty years, have nothing – nothing – in common.

There has no greater vexation in life, for me, than to see the dishonour that is heaped upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, by the frothy choruses, feel-good antics, counterfeit “bibles”, worldly imitation, and man-centred psychology of the modern evangelical “church”. Evidence gleaned from letters received, since this thesis was first published in 2003, has confirmed that the complete and openly visible absence of practical godliness that is displayed in the daily lives, speech, and actions of multitudes upon multitudes of people professing to be “Christians” has made a mockery of the name of Christ in the eyes of anyone with the least degree of spiritual discernment.

The research and observation that has gone into this thesis encompasses the years from 1972 to 2002. Since that latter date, the carnality of evangelical “Christianity” has become so extreme – so obscene – that research undertaken for this dissertation could never have anticipated the depravity that is carried on under the name of Christ by human beings today. This Internet site will appeal to a very, very few. It will be regarded as a waste of time … legalistic … extreme … even fanatical. It stands for reverence and humility towards the Lord God … and that, to the bulk of the world is offensive. From experience of the past thirty years, I am aware that the avowed Atheist will dismiss it; the majority of church-going, professing Christians, despise it.

For the purposes of this Internet site, half-truth is far more frightening than full error; Darby, more terrifying than Darwin; Arminianism more destructive than Atheism. The smiling assassin far more destructive than the blaspheming enemy.

A Civil War Between the Church and the Gay Community?

Its not often I come upon an article (or series) which, (a) I completely agree with, and (b) I highly recommend  to others without at least a few reservations. This is one.

( HT to Joel for pointing to this excellent essay by Jason A. Staples)

A Civil War Between the Church and the Gay Community? Part (1)

In the wake of the Supreme Court refusing to hear a case challenging the Washington, DC law recognizing gay marriages, DC pastor Anthony Evans has declared a “civil war between the church and the gay community“:

“[W]hat the Supreme Court has set up is the greatest civil war between the church and the gay community,” Evans said. “And let me just state for the record, we don’t want that fight. We love our gay brothers and sisters. But if the Supreme Court is not going to acknowledge the fact that we have a right as religious people to have a say-so in the framework of religious ethics for our culture and society, then we reject the Supreme Court on this issue.”

Wow. There’s so much wrong here it’s hard to know where to start. Evans complains that the Supreme court had denied “religious people” the right “to have a say so in the framework of religious ethics,” but that’s not what’s under discussion at all. On the contrary, the court decision concerns the question of secular legality, not religious ethics. That is to say, morality and legality in a secular society are two different domains, though there is certainly overlap…  But the Supreme Court had nothing whatsoever to say about Evans’ (or anyone else’s) right to declare an action immoral within a given framework of religious ethics. This conflation of political and religious spheres has become an increasingly visible problem in the political arena over the past thirty years (tracing at least to the beginning of Jerry Falwell’s “Moral Majority” and the rise of “dominion theology,” (which I’ll address later), a conflation that rests on a misunderstanding both of the foundations of US government and early Christian theology. (continue reading here)

A Civil War Between the Church and the Gay Community? Part 2

In Part One, we looked at how Washington, DC, pastor Anthony Evans’ declaration that the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear a case challenging the DC gay marriage law had “set up … the greatest civil war between the church and the gay community” reflected common misunderstandings of the foundations of US government. Today, we’ll look at things from the other side: the Christianity witnessed in the New Testament categorically rejects any conflation of the church (or the Kingdom of God) with a nation or government on this present earth. Any attempt to connect the government and the church misunderstands an essential part of the early Christian message.

Jesus, when his kingship was questioned, responded, “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). The beginning of Acts portrays the disciples asking the resurrected Jesus, “Will you now restore the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6). The rest of Acts shows that this question misunderstood the nature of the kingdom—the kingdom was indeed to be restored to Israel, but not in an earthly sense. Rather, Jesus was to rule his kingdom from his throne in the heavens, separate from and above every earthly government. Only at his return would that change. When Revelation depicts the cooperation of religion and the state, the results are horrifying—and really bad news for the church (cf. Rev 13:11–18; 17–18).

Unfortunately, these warnings have been largely ignored over the past two thousand years. In the United States, the last few decades have witnessed the rise of postmillennial “dominion” theologies, which teach that God has commanded and authorized the church to establish the kingdom of God on earth, at which point Christ will return to claim his kingdom.

(There are actually two separate strands of this teaching, one tying more closely to Reformed “Reconstructionism” and another coming out of the Charismatic Movement, but the end result of Christian “dominion” on the earth is the same in each.) Such dominion-style teaching is by no means new, and it is instructive to note that an older strain of this “Christ has commanded and authorized us to take dominion of the world in his name” teaching produced such outstanding fruit as the Holy Roman Empire, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition. (Plus various reigns of terror—like that of the murderous John Calvin in Geneva—during and after the Reformation.)

It is critically important that we realize that these atrocities were not committed by “monsters” bent on doing what they knew to be wrong; on the contrary, these things were done by people with good intentions, men who believed God to be on their side. (As John 16:2 warns, “An hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is serving God.”) In fact, as C.S. Lewis observes, it is not the sadist who is most to be feared but the person who commits atrocities thinking it’s the right thing to do.

My contention is that good men (not bad men) consistently acting upon that position would act as cruelly and unjustly as the greatest tyrants. They might in some respects act even worse. Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. … The practical problem of Christian politics is not that of drawing up schemes for a Christian society, but that of living as innocently as we can with unbelieving fellow-subjects under unbelieving rulers who will never be perfectly wise and good and who will sometimes be very wicked and very foolish. (“The Humanitarian Theory of Punishment”)

I should add at this point that such cruelty for the sake of the victim does not require belief in God at all but only a misguided sense of one’s own morality and a supreme confidence that one is in the right. Leninism, for example, had no supernatural deity but its oppression was exercised with a thorough confidence that all was being done for the good of the people—leading to millions of murders. Christianity, insofar as it follows Jesus, contains an antidote for this with the “take the speck out of your own eye first” command, demanding self-examination and purification before ever trying to help another. At any rate, given the dangers of nationalism (which led to the two world wars of the 20th Century), it is especially dangerous if a populace comes to think of itself as “God’s special nation.”  (continue reading here)

A Civil War Between the Church and the Gay Community? Part 3

In terms of sexual behavior at large, the church’s standard is certainly to be different from that of the surrounding culture—though a strong church will certainly impact the culture’s standards. But the important point is that this impact is most powerful when it comes through the witness of Christians successfully living up to the standards of the gospel while simultaneously proclaiming its demands—that is, “by the foolishness of preaching.”

Israel was chosen to be God’s special people among the nations, but this was not through becoming a great empire but by being an example among the nations, impressing non-Israelite nations with the faithfulness and justice (non-arbitrariness) of their God. Jesus’ life serves as the ultimate example of this principle that power is flexed from the bottom up, not from the top down. The church’s influence must come through service and proclamation, not by force of legislation.

Again, the moment a church looks to and relies upon secular legislation to achieve its aims, it declares its spiritual bankruptcy.

This is not to say that Christians are to have no involvement in public policy or lawmaking. Quite the contrary, in a society in which Christians have enough influence to hold office, they should strive to enact and enforce just laws, but the point is that there will always be a distinction between the laws of the nation and the imperatives of the church/gospel. Paul makes this clear enough in 1 Corinthians 5, where he is dealing with (wait for it…) sexual ethics. After thoroughly rebuking the church for not appropriately handling a situation of sexual immorality among its members and telling them to expel the offending member from fellowship, Paul explains,  (continue reading here)

Bristol Palin to release memoir this summer

There’s a few things I could say, but won’t.

But I will quote writer Aaron Sorkin,

“I don’t have any patience for the glamorization of dumbness.”

Yahoo News:

“Dancing With the Stars” finalist Bristol Palin will release a memoir this summer, Political Wire reports. Laura Miceli of HarperCollins confirmed to The Daily Caller that the company will in fact be publishing Palin’s memoir. “Yes, it looks like we are [publishing the book],” Miceli told TheDC, adding that it is scheduled to hit bookstores on June 21.

Palin’s book, which is set to be released in hardcover, currently holds the name, “Untiled Bristol Palin Memoir” on Amazon.com. Bristol is following in the footsteps of her mother, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has penned two memoirs. This news comes just days after Politics Daily reported that Sarah and Bristol Palin filed applications to trademark their names.

Egyptian Christians Join Calls for Reform

This is an interesting article at Christianity Today. What makes it of interest is the fact it contains quotes from an email sent by an Egyptian Protestant pastor.

quote…

The leaders of Egypt’s Christian minority increasingly are joining the calls for historic change and reform as protests in Cairo and other major cities this week demand the immediate resignation of President Hosni Mubarak. Until recently, many Christian leaders were guarded in their comments if not supportive of Mubarak. But in the past three days with Internet and mobile phone service restored, more are speaking out against injustice in Egypt and demanding political reform, though few are openly calling for Mubarak to resign right away.

Today by email, one prominent Protestant pastor said to his overseas supporters, “We stand united with our courageous young people who broke the barrier of fear and started to demand their basic human rights for a dignified life, freedom and social justice.”

The pastor said that Christians in Egypt “feel the pain of our nation.” He said young Egyptians feel betrayed by their leaders. He said corruption is a huge factor in the wide spread poverty in Egypt. “If you want to know where we stand from the present events, we refuse to give in to lies and to fear. We do not accept the lie that says accept a repressive and non-democratic regime because the alternative is worse. Is our God limited to few options?” He said Christian leaders have been praying for years for the nation. “We are asking for a new system where leaders with integrity and fear of God would tend to the need and the aspiration of Egyptians. Please pray with us.”

KY. Sen. Rand Paul vs John Hagee (CUFI)

After viewing the ABC Video clip; Rand Paul: ‘I’m Not Singling Out Israel’, it didn’t take a prophet to tell me we’d be hearing from John Hagee .

quote…

Tea Party-backed Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is calling for an end to “welfare” for Israel—and it’s caused an outcry among pro-Israel supporters in the Body of Christ.

The debate comes in the wake of a newly released House GOP budget. Paul insists the budget falls short of the measures needed to deal with a federal deficit. Paul continues to defend stance on ending all foreign aid—including the $3 billion the U.S. gives Israel every year—in the name of balancing the budget.

“I’m not singling out Israel. I support Israel. I want to be known as a friend of Israel,” Paul told ABC News, “but not with money you don’t have. We can’t just borrow from our kids’ future and give it to countries even if they are our friends.” Paul told ABC that Israel is probably 10 years ahead of any neighboring country and that its defense is significant and probably well in advance of its enemies. “Should we be giving free money or welfare to a wealthy nation?” Paul asked. “I don’t think so.”

In response, more than 22,500 members of Christians United for Israel (CUFI), including several hundred members from Paul’s state, have e-mailed the senator asking him to abandon his call to end aid to Israel.

“I do not believe that the Senator’s comments are representative of the Tea Party or the wider American public,” says John Hagee, CUFI founder and chairman. “CUFI members and leaders have met on several occasions with Tea Party leaders and elected officials. Throughout our meetings, Tea Party leaders consistently expressed their commitment to supporting Israel’s qualitative military edge in the Middle East.”

David Brog, CUFI’s executive director, says CUFI membership is concerned with both the strategic and moral implications of Paul’s stance.

NAR Prophetess’s Inflammatory Comments on the Egypt Crisis

Cindy Jacobs of the idolatrous wall street fiasco is in the news.

From Herescope,

“Also, in looking back at the prophetic word for 2011 issued by the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders…, I read the warning we issued which said that satan would try and start another third world war.” — Cindy Jacobs[1]

“Satan is going to try and start wars such as he did when the first student volunteer movement started around the turn of the 20th century…. We must pray against the starting of a third world war, as satan wants to escalate world events for His purposes.” — Cindy Jacobs[2]

On February 1, The Elijah List, chief media outlet for the New Apostolic Reformation, issued an e-mail with the heading “Cindy Jacobs: Pray Against WWIII” which featured an “Urgent Prayer Alert from Cindy Jacobs: An Open Letter to the Arabic-Speaking Christians as well as the Church Worldwide.” Steve Shultz, publisher of The Elijah List introduced this alert by touting Jacobs as “one of those who is a hard core prophet and she is accurate in regards to the nations and world leaders!”

In this alert, which concerns the volatile situation in Egypt, Jacobs refers back to a “prophetic word for 2011″ issued by the NAR’s core elite known as the Apostolic Council of Prophetic Elders in which they predicted that “satan would try and start another [sic] third world war.”

Jacobs’ alert states: I believe we are at that tipping point, at this moment, where the situation in Egypt could destabilize the region to such a degree that just such a scenario would take place.

Jacobs calls for an “Esther Fast” and then suggests that the Egypt crisis would be a fine time for Christians to “put aside their doctrinal and denominational differences and come together in unity to pray.” [emphasis in original]

Observe how this crisis is being seized upon as a way to promote more ecumenical unity.

Jacobs who sees herself as not only the lead U.S. national apostle[3] but also a prophetess to the Nations,[4] is increasingly issuing political “prophetic” statements about American and world events, which we documented in our September 8, 2010 Herescope post.[5] At that time we observed that she was inserting herself into the political realm by making inflammatory statements like:

“If the Church doesn’t fast and pray for a faster acceleration of revival and awakening, the iniquitous sin structures in the nation will tip the scale that is teetering and there will be another great depression.”[6]

Also, seizing on the Gulf Oil crisis last summer, Jacobs in her prophetess role called for national prayer. This sort of ambulance chasing after every crisis is a particular strategy that she and fellow NAR false prophets and apostles are employing to gain a foothold into the Christian Right. They are tirelessly working to gain name recognition and dominance, and prayer is a useful tactic to make them seem respectable.[7]

The endtime cult of Fear

Excellent post at EndTime Delusion,

quote..

Some of the most ardent and strident merchants of fear in society these days are not who you would expect. They are the ”watchmen” of the internet, those prophetic types who fancy themselves in the Biblical role of the watchman on the wall. They constantly beat the drums about how God’s judgment is upon the land, and catastrophe is always just around the corner. They fuse their own doctrines with scripture to captivate and hold hostage the attention of undiscerning Christians. They imply that the only way to respond to the unfolding global crises is to stay tuned to their broadcasts because they alone have the ‘revelation’ about what’s next to come. They alone have opened up this channel of communication with the Holy Spirit, through acts of their own righteousness, and that channel is not available to the rest of us mere fleshly mortals. Some seem to have this running conversation going on with the Holy Spirit, who always seems to give the next piece of revelation to them just in time to fit their broadcast schedules, and always it seems to relate to something in the current news. In their world it seems that the Holy Spirit is entirely focused on current affairs.

It is fear of the unknown that some of these endtime preachers capitalize on. They tell you they have the source of information you require for survival. They prey on man’s desire to know the future. Pretty soon you have one man, and his teachings, leading many followers down his particular path of political and survival ethics. These groups are fueled by paranoia, not faith in the Lord.

They use current affairs to project future events. Sensationalism is always added to the mix of the current news, and the result is a potent brew of fear…
