Rush Limbaugh made the right-wing talk-radio industry, and he just might break it

Ninety-eight major advertisers—including Ford and Geico—will no longer air spots on Premiere Networks’ ‘offensive’ programs. Insiders say the loss will rock right-wing talk radio.

Rush Limbaugh made the right-wing talk-radio industry, and he just might break it. Because now the fallout from the slurs against Sandra Fluke is extending to the entire political shock-jock genre.

Premiere Networks, which distributes Limbaugh as well as a host of other right-wing talkers, sent an email out to its affiliates early Friday listing 98 large corporations that have requested their ads appear only on “programs free of content that you know are deemed to be offensive or controversial (for example, Mark Levin, Rush Limbaugh, Tom Leykis, Michael Savage, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity).”

This is big. According to the radio-industry website Radio-Info.com, which first posted excerpts of the Premiere memo, among the 98 companies that have decided to no longer sponsor these programs are “carmakers (Ford, GM, Toyota), insurance companies (Allstate, Geico, Prudential, State Farm), and restaurants (McDonald’s, Subway).” Together, these talk-radio advertising staples represent millions of dollars in revenue.

Valerie Geller, an industry insider and author of Beyond Powerful Radio, confirmed the trend. “I have talked with several reps who report that they’re having conversations with their clients, who are asking not to be associated with specifically polarizing controversial hosts, particularly if those hosts are ‘mean-spirited.’ While most products and services offered on these shows have strong competitors, and enjoy purchasing the exposure that many of these shows and hosts can offer, they do not wish to be ‘tarred’ with the brush of anger, or endure customer anger, or, worse, product boycotts.”  More Here

  1. Recent polls seem to be indicating that Republicans are losing women voters in significant numbers because none of the Republican candidates came out strongly against Limbaugh. In fact Sarah Palin (a “non-candidate” “potential candidate” seemingly endorsed what Limbaugh said. The fact that the President spoke decisively and clearly against Limbaughs comments is making women think twice. And Mitt Romney didn’t help things by making the comment he made about his wife. It really betrays a way of thinking that is repulsive to women in general and only the most fervently conservative manage to suck it up and continue to support the team.

Yes. And do you recall the “joy” at having a “real Christian” picked as the republican running-mate many Christian bloggers immediately expressed the morning after Palin’s acceptance speech in Sept. 08?. Plus all the ridiculous articles in the weeks following, such as Sarah Palin and the Deborah Anointing.

I recall getting slammed here on the blog for telling people not to be so quick to ‘anoint’ her before actually knowing anything about her.

  2. It’s been on my heart a lot lately that God’s righteous judgement upon this nation is LONG overdue. It’s been my prayer that God will judge, and judge quickly, and not continue to let His name be blasphemed with impunity as it is in this nation. Even if that means that I have to suffer in the midst of it myself, I will at least see God glorify His name.

It’s long overdue that something happened to break this (so called) connection between “right wing politics” and Christianity. This notion that Republicans are the “Christian” side. No political view is Christian (at least not as it is demonstrated in American politics).

And, even so, Come Lord Jesus. And let judgement begin in the house of the Lord, but then let it quickly encompass the religion of politics. If I have to suffer under another four years of Obama, then let it be. Only judge your righteous judgement upon us. If I have to sit through four years of an anti-christ cult member, let it be, but only let your righteous judgement come and end this nonsense.

True Kirby. And the Church in America will face judgment for this blatant adultery.

And, even so, Come Lord Jesus. And let judgement begin in the house of the Lord, but then let it quickly encompass the religion of politics.

      Amen, Amen!
