God in America: Part 6 – Of God and Caesar

God in America, a 6-part series made by PBS-Frontline is well worth watching. If you’ve not watched it you can find all 6 segments at PBS

Last evening I finished part 6 (on my Netflix) and wanted to share it with you. So make your self a cup of coffee or grab a soft drink and kick back and watch this. If you’re anything like me, you’ll find it very informative.

  1. I was born in 1952 and I was born again in March of 1975. I lived through much of this, and I watched the entire video with a grieving heart. I will write a post about it and I thank you, PJ. But the one thing that stood out for me is that just like in politics today, Christianity and evangelicals are spoken of as entities. With an objectivity void of spiritual passion, this documentary accurately presented the facts but like most was blind to the essence of Christ.
And because the faith has become bedfellows with politics and nationalism, the church at large continues to lose what little spiritual depth it may have once had. In essence, Jesus Himself has become a doctrine, a moral leverage, a religious name, and even a good teacher. But sadly, He is no longer the Lord of Glory in His own church, which in reality is not His own anymore. There is an invisible church made up of different points of light with some being a part of a local fellowship.
But for the most part, the visible church which meets in buidlings made with hands is a religious institution which energetically practices its faith without Jesus.
Than you again for this video.

    • And because the faith has become bedfellows with politics and nationalism, the church at large continues to lose what little spiritual depth it may have once had.

Amen. The Church, as a whole, ceased depending upon the Holy Spirit.

I heard an old preacher say, the Holy Spirit is a gentleman…He’ll not stay where He’s not wanted.

  2. Watched the video with somewhat of a heavy heart. It was a PBS documentary, so it is as neutral as possible, but like Rick said: Christ is absent. I think it’s funny only the particular phenomenon of “American Religion” is highlighted.

I suppose that’s what this was about: American religion, not Christ. The faithful were there all along I suppose, living in the footsteps of their Savior.

Also PJ, I’d have to disagree. The Lord Jesus Christ is no gentleman! He had to break into the Strongman’s house to get me out. He’s no chivalrous knightly figure, but a revolutionary liberator.

But you’re right, many churches are not Churches of Jesus Christ but are churches of other gods in the pantheon of Americana. They’ve lost the candlestick and replaced it with stars & stripes.

    • Cal i think, if i recall correctly, what that old preacher was getting at (u have to remember im talking about an old fashion Kentucky preacher, aha!) is that when Churches and church leaders stop completely relying upon the Spirit, that He’ll depart.

We know, from the word, its possible to offend, insult, and grieve the Holy Spirit,

“How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?” Heb. 10:29

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption” Eph. 4:30

We can even quench the Spirit,

“Do not quench the Spirit” 1Thess. 5:19

Now these are things believers can do to the Holy Spirit. This is not talking about unbelievers who don’t know any better.

  3. This helped me see through some of my own grief and confusion. The politics in my church was so monolithic, as if we knew all and everyone else was wrong and on the road to hell. If you think you have a special pipeline to the Throne, why should you listen to anyone else? The thing is, if God was on our side, why did our “Christian” agenda fail when we had the White House?
    Thank you for this, PJ.

    • Glad you liked this Louise. I enjoyed, and learned some new things from the entire 6 part program..it was all very interesting. :-)

The thing is, if God was on our side, why did our “Christian” agenda fail when we had the White House?

      Exactly…
