Recently, when replying to a letter received, I recalled a little story I’d read years ago, about Scarecrows, so went searching for it. After staying up until 3am, running mega searches, until I sensed my eyes were ‘crossing’, I finally located it.
Recently, a scarecrow in the visage of a policeman was found standing guard in a watchtower doing sentry duty over some 700 Brazilian prisoners.
(Taubate Provisional Detention Centre is for prisoners waiting to stand trial)
While a judge was being given a tour of the facility, the scarecrow guard was discovered and taken away as evidence. Apparently, it had been there standing duty for days.
Brazilian prisons and jails are notorious for suffering riots and jailbreaks. The visiting judge has been described as
upset over his discovery.
Pretty funny news item….except for the people living in neighboring areas, who falsely believed they were safe from these criminals. They, I’m sure, had confidence that these guards were doing their job–watching.
This somewhat amusing story, is a picture of what I see today, within the body of Christ: Christians placing their confidence in what they believe are TRUE WATCHMEN, not realizing the walls are populated with nothing more then scarecrows.
In the natural, if from a distance, its not hard to be fooled you know..for well made scarecrows DO resemble men. If they didn’t, farmers wouldn’t have been placing them in corn fields for ages, to chase away the birds.
The difference is, we are Christians not birds, and should be able to tell the difference. We’re suppose to have God given discernment. Right?
The other side of this story is the reason why the real Watchmen/Guards were not watching and guarding!
Could be they were tired…tired of standing on that wall day after day, night after night, watching. Perhaps they thought, after a while of this, ‘why bother, nothing is happening,’….so they decided it was fruitless work.
Or maybe it was plain laziness. Or worse yet, they just decided to join the rest of the ‘gang’ in the barracks, who were playing cards, drinking and making merry etc..because they felt like this ‘watching’ was cutting into their time’s of play & relaxation.
In this news story, dire circumstances could have possibly been the result of this deserting of their posts…
In the body of Christ, there is no ‘possibly’…disaster is guaranteed to be the outcome when Watchmen desert their posts.
All believers are called to be Watchmen on the wall. We’re to watch for the approaching of the enemy, and sound a trumpet blast, a warning to others.
“PREPARE! GIRD UP YOUR LOINS, FOR THE ENEMY APPROACHES!”
And approach he will…for see, unlike many of us, he is not fooled by the scarecrows on the wall. He knows there is no power in those straw men. And that nothing they can do can keep him at bay or turn him aside.
Many in the body of Christ are soon to find themselves in a frightening position in these last days. They have deserted their posts and allowed scarecrows to stand guard. They are asleep on the watch..
How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy. Proverbs 6:9-10, 15
Apathy has become the real enemy.
One last comment…
Those I have witnessed who are staying at their posts, blowing the trumpet call of warning, are being looked upon as dooms-day ‘sayers’…or fanatics.
I guess things never change, for it was the same in the old Testament, when God sent the likes of Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Isaiah, and the others to Israel.
Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken. Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them. Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it. Jer. 6:17-19
My prayer is to stay awake. Jesus told us to watch;
Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the rooster crowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. Mark 13:35-36
It may not be easy…for the cloud of apathy is strong. But with the help of the Holy Spirit, I will stay awake and alert.
I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. Hab.2:1
