From Stand to Reason:

Christianity vs. Politics

J. Budziszewski’s two articles from a past issue of First Things contrasts Christianity with the political philosophies of liberalism and conservatism. While Christians need to engage our culture via politics, we always have to be thoughtful about how our values translate into political positions. While we have to make decisions and choices based on political options to carry out our obligations as citizens, we have to recognize that Christianity can never be identified with a political party. Budziszewski offers some helpful food for thought..

It is not by the world that the world is moved–yet how it pulls. Ah, God, help us let go of the heights and the depths, the thrones and dominions, the powers and principalities; to be not conservatives, nor yet liberals, but simply Christians. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Hosts.”

  1. Romans 12:19

Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

We are not to desire to be the instruments of God’s Wrath, but rather the instruments to be used to spread the Good News of the Gospel.

If you notice in the Bible, the usual instruments of God’s wrath were evil.

  2. Hi John, you know, i watched this entire presentation on PBS when it aired, and yet when watching this small portion again, i still found myself stunned once more at the words said by the speaker at Hagee’s CUFI conference: “Arab’s have no soul”..

That flies in the face of the Gospel, which tells us Jesus came to offer salvation to ALL mankind.

I read stories almost every day, accounts & personal testimonies of men and women who were once practicing Muslims who came to Christ…& are now born again Christians.

If you notice in the Bible, the usual instruments of God’s wrath were evil

    yes…you’re right.

I read an article at Foreign Policy in Focus today, called America’s Armageddonites. (you can read it HERE )

Though i may not agree with the tone of the article–its a secular org. or even everything written in it, i understood what the author was basically saying. That being there are many evangelical groups today which have arose which are seeking to be instruments (personally) in bringing about prophecy fulfillment:

They are the new “Armageddonites,” fundamentalist evangelicals who have moved from forecasting Armageddon to actually trying to bring it about.

To me, this is frightening. We cannot force God’s hand or time-table of events. But its exactly what these groups, like CUFI, appear to be trying to do.

  3. I wish John Hagge and his followers would do the work of an evangelist. How many of those officials at his program has heard a clear presentation of the gospel. I have a sneaky suspicion some of them might not be showing up if presented with the consequences of rejecting the Messiah(Jesus) as their Lord and Savior. I believe in bible prophecies and I know they would be fulfilled just as God intend it to be but he does not need the arm of Caesar to fulfill His plans. I do believe initiatives like CUFI are about power and influence. This kind of project end up giving bad name to biblical prophecies.

  4. To hear that someone said “Arab’s have no soul” is a grief to my soul, and I know it grieves the Lord. This in no way represents true Christianity.

  5. I do believe initiatives like CUFI are about power and influence. This kind of project end up giving bad name to biblical prophecies

I agree with you on both counts…Christianity is not suppose to be some huge political power, but its always had men who tried to take it in that direction & ‘marry’ the two, starting as far back as Constantine…or possibly even before that.

From my reading it appears the more modern version of this started up in the late 60’s early 70’s when the first seeds of the moral majority were sown. Though it may have started out with good intentions, its morphed into what we see today–a monster which calls itself ‘Christian’ but is anything but.

Like Cathy said, to hear someone associated with an org. claiming Christ, & headed up by someone who says he is a man of God, call all Arabs soul-less, is not the Christianity of the bible.

By the way, Ken Silva posted further proof tonight on his blog: Christian Research, that Hagee believes Jesus did not come as the Messiah: (he has a video along with his post)

You can read/see it here- just click on the title:

John Hagee: “Jesus Rejected to the Last Detail the Role of Messiah in Word or Deed”

  6. PJ,

Yes I Think many such as John Hagee get “drunk” on the influence and accolades that they receive, and the “flesh” slowly gains the upper hand, taking them into the “ditch”

The Bible is full of such examples and men still do not learn.

    I liked this quote:

    1. God sends tests to “prove” our integrity.

    2. The devil sends tests to “destroy” our integrity.

    3. We bring tests on ourselves from “lack” of integrity.

Many such as John Hagee fall at the first post, and then leave themselves open for the other two. But claim those “tests” and “Persecutions” are just the devil attacking them for “being faithful”

Something for all of us to learn and what the modern church has lost the discernment to understand: which one is causing their “test” For the most part the modern church is being tested becasue of number three.

I believe most of the current rage from the Arab World towards the West is because of our lack of integrity. That does not mean however that they would not persecute us when and if we did act like True Followers of Christ.

But we should always be persecuted not for a lack of integrity but becasue we act like True Followers of Christ.

  7. Good quote John…i may have to borrow that some time, lol

I believe most of the current rage from the Arab World towards the West is because of our lack of integrity.

Yes i think so too…its not only the Arab world, but the world in general…how they perceive us, and in many instances they are right. Its also why men like Hagee, who are so visible & are suppose to be representing Christ, are frightening.

But we should always be persecuted not for a lack of integrity but because we act like True Followers of Christ.

Yes, if its not for Christ and for the Gospel’s sake , its in vain.

That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

  8. False Prophet!

  9. PJMiller,

Yes, Hagee claims that Jesus refused to claim that he was the Messiah.

  10. Yes he did….

its interesting that this Moyers special on Hagee and CUFI aired around the same time, or close to the time that book was released.

I’m still laughing at that pic you have up on your blog of Hagee ‘riding’ that cruise missile…i’d love to borrow it!

Music from Broken Chords

Down in the human heart, crush'd by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. From the Hymn "Rescue the Perishing" by Fanny J. Crosby
