Watchmen on the Wall

This evening I came across a message I remembered reading back when it was first posted in 2004. It was impressed upon my spirit then, and even more as I re-read it again tonight. I have never witnessed a time more, when we need to be alert and watching, and when many Christians seem to be asleep. We all need to be ‘watchmen on the wall’ folks…even if there are those who will condemn us for ‘blowing’ the trumpet.

From: CrossRoad, Asleep On The Watch

I have been told that in this day and age the role of watchman as understood in the Old Testament has been done away with, that it is not necessary because we are not under the wrath of God but under grace through Jesus Christ. If there are watchmen today, I am told, they cannot be held to the same degree of accountability that God required of Ezekiel.

If there are watchmen today as described in Ezekiel, who are these watchmen? And after examining the following from Ezekiel 33, who would ever want to be put in this position?

The Watchman’s Duty: Ezekiel 33

“And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ‘Son of man, speak to the sons of your people and say to them,

‘If I bring a sword upon a land, and the people of the land take one man from among them and make him their watchman, and he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows on the trumpet and warns the people, then he who hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, and a sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet but did not take warning; his blood will be on himself.  But had he taken warning, he would have delivered his life.

“But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet and the people are not warned, and a sword comes and takes a person from them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require from the watchman’s hand.’

“Now as for you, son of man, I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel; so you will hear a message from My mouth and give them warning from Me.  When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require from your hand. But if you on your part warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your life. ” Ezekiel 33:1-9

If we look closely in chapter 20 in the book of Acts we see that the Apostle Paul understood this mandate even as he warned the overseers in Ephesus concerning his departure after being with them for three years. Here is one example clearly stated:

“I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

“I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be on the alert (watch), remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears.” Acts 20:26-31  (also see Acts 18:6)

One could say that this was an Apostolic responsibility that was not passed on to us but if we look in Hebrews we see that the overseers were exhorted by its writer to look out for the sheep, to guard and warn them as watching over the flock:

“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.” Hebrews 13:17

In Mark, chapter 13, we see that Jesus is telling us of the things to come regarding the Last Days. He exhorts us all to be on the alert, to be watchful of the things to come. It seems we have all been called to be in a constant state of watchfulness in some capacity as believers in Christ:

“Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come. It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay on the alert. Therefore, be on the alert — for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning — in case he should come suddenly and find you asleep. What I say to you I say to all, ‘Be on the alert!'” Mark 13:33-37

Why am I asking these questions or why am I even concerned that anyone is at watch for the body of Christ?

As Paul states in Acts 20:28-31, there has been through the centuries and still continues to this day, to be many savage wolves coming into the flock and also rising up from within to deceive and steal away disciples after themselves. I would hope this is not a surprise to anyone but sadly, I must report, this is probably the state of many churches everywhere.

Just testifying of my own experience, over the last 10 years, I have visited dozens of churches that have had an ‘open door’ policy, accepting whatever doctrine or new teaching that comes through the door. Unlike the words of Paul in Ephesians 4, about those who should be watching and equipping the saints, to bring us to maturity, not being tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine, they in fact willingly open their sails to allow any wind to blow them about. I have witnessed many in leadership, whether pastor, elders or overseers who have no clue to what has come through their doors or is about to come upon them as we look to the return of our Lord Jesus Christ.

No one is guarding the flock as the wolf moves silently about looking for those he can devour.

As I was wondering what has happened to those called to watch over the flocks, in whatever capacity that they serve, I thought of a little Mother Goose nursery rhyme about Little Boy Blue and how appropriate this is for today’s churches:

Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn.
The sheep’s in the meadow, the cow’s in the corn.
Where is the boy that looks after the sheep?
“He’s under the haycock, fast asleep.”
Will you wake him? “No, not I;
For if I do, he’ll be sure to cry.”

Somebody please wake the watchmen! I would rather have sadness and grief with much tears, bringing us to repentance, than to continue to see the churches being infiltrated and assimilated by New Age Occultism, false teaching, heresies, philosophies of men and doctrines of demons as the watchmen sleep.

I have written this before and it has happened again just recently. I was asked which church I would recommend for a new Christian to begin fellowship. As a Christian of more than 30 years, and after visiting dozens of churches locally, I could not think of any church where I would send this person without knowing that they would in some way be caught up in the current trends of deception that are sweeping through the body of Christ. This is related to the lack of discernment being used by the leadership that are asleep.

Steven Mitchell writes in his article “Watchman Arise,” (* very good message!)

“Since God mentions this ministry several times throughout the Bible with great clarity, we do well to read, heed, and learn to be men and women with this attitude for the church today. While we may not be under the threat of physical invasion today, or living in literal walled fortresses, Satan and his workers seek to destroy and lay siege to the church today through false teachers and ungodly philosophies. He seeks to lead us into false forms of worship and unbiblical teachings that masquerade as truth. He has engineered and orchestrated a full-out assault on the people of God today, complete with deceptive false ministers and non-prophets who no longer view His Word as the primary basis for true doctrine. The church is definitely under attack and, therefore, definitely and desperately in need of watchmen in this age.”

Pastors, elders, overseers, shepherds and watchmen; please heed this call to awaken and warn the flock of the dangers that face your churches today. You are responsible and accountable if you do not warn them. Their blood will be on your hands.

quote..

The 21st century has come.  With its arrival, comes a general feeling that we, as the church, are in the final hours of history before the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As we look out upon the vast ocean of humanity, we see a world largely lost in sin and in desperate need of this Savior we are (or should be) in such earnest expectation to see. Indeed, the world can be a savage place and we are eyewitnesses to this generation’s increased ungodliness. False teachings and demonic wisdom abound within and without the church. Delusion and confusion are spreading far and wide. There’s never been a more crucial time for working and moving in the ministry of the “watchman”….

  1. It seems all of Christianity is asleep, no matter the denomination-
I have been astounded when listening to some of my favorite christian radio programs will refer to Rick Warren or some other ministry that is dangerous to the body of Christ. It’s everywhere.

I was wondering JP what you thought of Calvary Chapel churches?

I am also struggling with where to take non believers and young believers to church.

  2. Hi Mary…

The only thing i know about Calvary Chapel churches is ‘i believe’ they spring from or are off-shoots of the original one located in Costa Mesa, which is pastored by Chuck Smith.

    Someone else may know more….

I know there are numerous churches affiliated with that one; where in the country do you live? I ask because you might be able to look up the one nearest you by doing a search on Calvary Chapel churches. I just did, and there were many which came up, along with their websites.

Isn’t it something…here we’re living in a time when we have to closely check out any church we’re considering attending, in depth! Even those which in the past were good bible-based churches. Because we don’t know if they too have slipped into teaching false doctrine or have joined up with some nonsensical apostate group like the NAR.

    Lord come quickly…

  3. PJ, praise the Lord for your articles on the ‘Watchman” and it’s related link, “Tribulation and the Rapture”. I am pleased to find that your website does very well, in that your articles do not shy away from the responsibility of all True Believers, which is to stand firm in truth. The next greatest gift, just below Jesus Christ Himself, is His Word, and His Spirit to teach us that Word.

Warnings are not uncommon to God, nor are they past tense in the Holy Bible. If they were, nearly 80 % of the Bible could be ignored. But of course, the Words of God are written to reconcile God with His children, so that none are lost, and to keep them. The burden of blood in a watchman’s hands, is in reality, common to us all. It is simply a matter of “following” Jesus Christ, all day, everyday. Granted, most of us do not feel like our testimonies have much impact, but I tell you a solid truth, every little thing we do, every little thing we say, and our response to every action in our path, has a precise purpose in God’s Will.

Therefore, part of our ability to remove the blood from our hands, is based upon the love in our hearts. Love carries no burden, nor does love lose it’s zeal. Our problem comes, when we think that our labors are low, insignificant or not of God. But this folly is only the result of one’s pride. Our nation has been drilled on the recognition of success, and of those whom enjoy the fruits of their labors. But God’s plan for each of us, is just as powerful, and is as important, as any high calling, that the many so called evangelists, ministers, prophets, healers, teachers or leader claim.

No matter the work, whether as one whom visits the sick, cooks for the needy, cleans the church, or witnesses at every call, our planting of seeds are seen and judged by every sinner, and is the music of our horn. Never, ever think that one’s place is God’s church is ineffectual, or lacking. If one is to run the race, run with all you have, which is plentiful in the purposes of the Lord. Do not aspire to be anything, but that which Jesus leads you to.

Note to Mary B. I do happen to attend a Calvary Chapel church where I live. I chose this church based upon its emphasis of Bible study. But, I am sorry to say, they do not keep with the original Word of God (King James), and are ardent supporters of the pre-tribulation doctrine. Like so many churches, there are many good, loving soldiers of Jesus Christ within the congregation. As a result I have spoken to a few of those whom the Lord has put in my path.

Further, I have joined one of their home Bible study groups which provides the opportunity to stand for God’s Word. Therefore, I would recommend that you might join one of these groups, and allow the Spirit to lead your witness there. Someday, and probably soon, I will no longer be able to stay as a regular participant of the Calvary Chapel church organization, but until then, I will continue to follow the precepts of Jesus Christ and love the people, and not the church.

  4. Mary B. wrote,”I am also struggling with where to take non believers and young believers to church.”

    Hi Mary,
A friend and I were recently discussing this issue. We came to the conclusion that the most helpful discipling we could do was to teach a new believer how to feed themselves using a Bible, Strong’s Concordance and a good commentary. One I use is “The Expositor’s Bible Commentary” Abridged Edition by Kenneth L. Barker and John. R. Kohlenberger 111. I just work through a one book of the bible at a time, started with the NT.
I realize this doesn’t answer your question exactly but I believe what I suggested above along with prayer and fellowship would benefit new believers.

  5. Just a note of caution: I certainly agree that our new babes in Jesus Christ should begin their growth with the Holy Bible. However, most commentaries are based upon the corrupted texts of Origen, Westcott & Hort. These scholars were not true to the Word of God. Second, Strong’s concordance will only confuse the reader, because his scholarship is also in line with the Westcott & Hort apostasy. Mr. Storng was himself a member of the many Bible revision committees that base their version on the exploits of Origen.
Hence, by all means provide a Bible to the new convert, but stand on the testimony of the Word: “But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him!” (I John 2: 27).

  6. oh, thank you Dave 2 , NLN, and PJ.
I am currently attending aCalvary Chapel near me and do disagree with some of their teaching. However, I have found it beneficial to atleast give the two nonchristians in my life a taste of the corporate Body of Christ and to let them know there are other believers out there.
There are some things that bug me about CC but I need the fellowship and the teaching is actually very good, though the gospel presentation could be much stronger. Sigh.
Thank you Dave2 for the info on commentaries. I will consider this.

  7. I hope this isn’t taking away from the post, or opening a can of worms but could you elaborate Dave 2 on how the bible scholars you mentioned were not true to the word of God? I am far from being a bible scholar and don’t want to mislead anyone.

  8. Mary, there are many books on this subject that explain the historical ancestry of Biblical texts, and they reveal the blatant corrupt changes to our Holy Word.
    1) “Which Bible” by Dr. David Otis Fuller
    2) “An Understandable History of the Bible” by Rev. Samuel C. Gipp
    3) “Defending the King James Bible” by Dr. David Waite
    4) “Another Gospel” by Robert Baker
5)’The King James Bible defended” By Edward F. Hills
    6) “The Christian handbook of Bible Scholarship” by Ruckman

Or if you’d like, I offer a little on the subject at: watchmanscall.com under the Bible Help topic at this website.
There are really only 3 reasons why the Christian church has fallen so deeply into apostasy: one, some Christians rely on corrupt versions of text, or don’t bother to read their Bible at all. Second, because of the many versions, commentaries, language aides etc. it’s not hard to get confused, so some choose to just let their pastors explain the Word of God. And three, God’s Holy Word is empowered by the Holy Spirit to reach the sinner and convict their hearts, teach and correct doctrine and to prophesy. And sadly, some lukewarm Christians do not like what the Spirit tells them, and seek other scripts of their choice.
I realize this hasn’t answered your question, if you cannot locate those books, try Jesus-is-Lord.com and scroll to their section on the King James Bible. Further, if you’d like, I can answer your question in detail at a later time. Thank You for Loving Jesus Christ.

  9. Mary B, here is a brief summary of the Bible Wars, as I call them. I pray that you will find resolution and peace in your effort to discern what is truth, and follow.

The history of Bible corruption is a lengthy study, but one that reveals how subtle little changes can impact an entire doctrine and even religion. In an effort to make this as brief as possible, without losing significant details, there are essentially two steams of Bible ancestry. One, the true inspired work of God, and two, the satanically manipulated effort to defraud God’s Holy Word to men.
In the bible world, these two types of scholarship are distinguished by those whom copy script, and those whom edit script. Our problem comes when the scholarship of wise men, whom began to dictate and correct biblical truth. Down through 3000 years of history, the art of language translation influenced what we read today. The original says “this”, but should have meant “that”. As a result, when translations first appeared as the languages of men changed from Hebrew, to Aramaic, to Greek etc. only those skilled in this field, could preserve or alter text. Since the devil is not about to ignore any opportunity to subvert God’s relationship with man, many of his most skilled followers involved themselves in this work.
Hence, the Old Testament became influenced by the Babylonian Talmud, and it’s Kabbalah mysticism, and later, the New Testament was influenced by the works of pagan gnostic mysticism. The chain of custody for the corrupted texts can be physically traced to the works of Origen, and handed down to Eusebius (Constantine’s bible), to Jerome (Catholic bible) to the revision committees that are the results of the Westcott & Hort corruption.
The true Word of God was carried down through the ages by those whom did not alter text, and later was translated by those whom were devout true believers in the promises of God. The Ben Chayyim Masoretic text is a literal copy of the ancient Old Testament. The Ben Asher Old Testament Masoretic text adopted the influence of Origen, into it’s script.
The New Testament was given to us by the works of men such as Erasmus, Tyndale, Coverdale, Wycliffe and Martin Luther. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the New Testament came into review by a 1871 revision committee that promised to translate the King James Bible into a modern version. However, instead of using the original texts that the King James authors used, they went back to the works of Origen and “corrected” the bible.
As a result, all of the new translations are based upon the revision committee’s work that changes God’s Holy Word. The devil is not stupid. He realized that to alter script in a major way would not be accepted as a legitimate bible. Therefore, he very carefully altered key script by adding, removing or rewriting a verse here, and there, to justify his doctrine.
For an example: In Genesis 22:8, God says:”And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together!” The modern translation adds the word “for” before the word “himself” which changes the meaning of God’s promise, which is, that he will send “himself” as a lamb. When you add “for himself”, this changes the implication that God so loved us, that He Himself would be our atonement for sin.
Then, to support this subtle little change, in Isaiah 9:6, God says: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace!”
Modern translations remove the words of “The mighty God, The everlasting Father” so that the implication of God’s promise to send Himself is not recognized. That is why many of the new translations remove I John 5:7 from their bibles: “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one!” Both the New International Version (NIV), and the New World Translation (Jehovah Witness Bible) remove I John 5: 7.
This is only one example of the over 2000 corruptions of God’s Word authored by the revisionist works. Some translations have even more than that. My suggestion is that one take a King James and compare its verse against the modern translations and note that many scriptures have been removed, changed or added to. The sole purpose behind this demonic work is to remove the Lord Jesus Christ, Savior from our collective thoughts, to open the door for another to claim that title.
In many of the modern translations the words Jesus Christ, or Jesus our Lord are removed. “Repentance”, “damnation”, “hell “, and even virgin birth are also removed to make worship a much easier, kinder and gentle practice. If one does not recognize that the wages of sin mean eternal damnation, “ where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth”, then the punishment of death loses its impact.
The variety of bibles is most responsible for the number of doctrines and religions in the world today, and interpretation of scriptures has further divided the church. In the coming days, prophetic events will be fulfilled, and most who do not trust themselves to read the Bible, nor believe that the Holy Spirit will teach them, will in the end, surrender to the great apostasy.
Jesus said in Revelations 3: 8 & 9 “I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and has not denied my name. Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee!”
Many Christians have come, claiming to be Jews spiritually, but do lie and are of the synagogue of Satan.

  10. Thank you Dave2.

I have been reading up on Westcott and Hort. I greatly appreciate you explaining in your above comment how the sublte variations can really alter the Hope of the Gospel.
I have a King James Bible and will start comparing it to my NASB. wow, this is all new to me.

If I could be so bold Dave 2, I would appreciate your oppinion ,and anyone else willing to give this a read for my peace of mind as I have been struggling greatly after reading this article:

    http://www.tribwatch.com/

It’s not that I am a pretriber-I’m not but I find it hard to put in practice what this writter is suggesting. Though it makes sense.
It is very long just to let you know.

  11. Specifically, the chapter: Provisions in the wild.

  12. Mary, I have bookmarked this page and will review it’s contents and offer what I can, in a few days. From the titles of the chapters, I am somewhat suspicious of the claim, that the anti-Christ will come from Russia.
However I’m not surprised by that suggestion, in as much, as the anti-Christ, needs an anti-Christ, to suggest that he is the Messiah of the Jews. I refer to Ezekiel 38 & 39, where the armies of gog and magog attack Israel and the United States.
This invasion of course, is the un-welcomed battle of World War III. After the conclusion of this very short, but lethal war, the false prophet will then call World war III, the Battle of Armageddon.
Therefore, since Revelations states that in the Battle of Armageddon, Jesus Christ will destroy the anti-Christ, it will be helpful to the anti-Christ ,to have a pasty, to play that role.
Another title states that the anti-Christ will not sign a treaty with Israel, but with many. Here again, a play on words can be used to twist the truth. The covenant with many will come at the completion of World War III, where this man will promise an end of war. After the Third World War, I can’t imagine anyone not wishing to agree to this proposal. However, the rest of Daniel 9: 27 speaks of ending the sacrifices and oblations. This is the covenant that the anti-Christ will make with Israel. Further, yes there will be a 3rd Temple, and it is in that temple, that the anti-Christ will commit abomination.
But I am only responding to the titles, and I will read the material before offering a complete biblical opinion.
Also, I will review the “provisions in the wild” as there may be some practical information worthy of examining. Lastly, God Bless You and I am pleased that many like you are studying the Bible and looking for God’s Will in the days ahead. Amen.

  13. Thank You Dave 2,
You have given me alot to think and pray about. I have been up all night with anxiety as I really begin to consider this writter’s practical recommendations.
For instance, I am in debt. Though I have heard the warnings to get out of debt it isn’t until now why that is so important. All of this is hitting me pretty hard -what it might cast me in the end with my relationships.

Lastly, what really scares me is realization that not everything can be discussed over the internet . This person who wrote the article cautions against it. I think you’ll knowwhat I mean once you read more. This is so very very hard to deal with. May God have mercy on us.
