There’s Somebody out there…

I first heard Tommy Bates almost 30 years ago when he was traveling around  KY preaching the Gospel at any church who would let him. He was a  young man back then, but I can still recall how simply and powerfully he preached God’s word.  Since then, he acccepted the call to pastor at a Church a few miles from me, and has been there for many years.

Today my son had this song on a CD in his car and wanted me to hear it. Its Tommy Bates speaking first, briefly, about a local tragedy which occurred here awhile back. Then he sings…

I hope the song blesses you as much as it did me.

Maybe there’s ‘somebody out there’ right now who needs to hear this? I don’t know, but I felt impressed to share it.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11: 28-30

  1. Great song and sure hope it ministered to the students. However, I wish I hadn’t followed the links and found another song he sings “The Drinking Song” with words “have you ever been so drunk that you didn’t know your name, so intoxitated on something you can’t explain, can you roll across the floor, need a hand to take you home…..”. Is Tommy Bates into the Toronto Blessing and Rodney Howard Brown, god’s bar tender? Hope this one isn’t on the CD. I don’t drink from THAT river anymore, thank God

    • He’s old time pentecostal Margie.

      I knew he wouldn’t appeal to everyone…lol

But i am always blessed by his preaching and singing!🙂

Could be because i know his walk…

  2. Tommy Bates came to the first church I attended up in Alaska. He played this song for us. It is a great song! Thanks for reminding me about it.

    • Glad you liked it Polycarp!

There are so many out there today…lonely, confused, lost with what they believe is no hope.

Jesus is waiting for them to call upon him…

  3. Yes, I “amen” that song too PJ and the depth of his voice to belt it out is amazing. He tickles the ivory well too; that is if he is the one playing the piano?

As for the “other” song. The problem as I see it is not him or the words to his song or the experiences he is singing about. For these things do occur among spirit filled born again Christian Saints and they have been codified by Scripture. The problem is how immaturity and foolishness has come into the meetings and gatherings and has clouded the “effects” of the True Holy Ghost experience He wants us to have by Him. It is this that the Holy Ghost “stays” away from. So when you are out of bounds in a spirit of emotions and not the Holy Ghost, the extreme manifestations seem to cloud the Truth about True Worship.

Notice this in Acts, apparently being refreshed was normal to the 1st. Century Church:::> Act 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

Remember that this is the same crowd from Acts 2.

Apparently these sorts of “effects” upon the hearts and spirits of the Believers was strong enough and carried along to the next generation as we see something similar being taught by Paul in Ephesians:::>

Eph 5:17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Eph 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
Eph 5:19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,
Eph 5:20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Eph 5:21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

When we go beyond the Word or where the Holy Ghost would bring us, then there is a problem and its always the problems that people remember in this world devils full and make a bad report about moreso than the goodness of the Lord.

Such is the life of the Holy Ghost filled effects in this world. This world is on a different course:::>

Eph 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins
Eph 2:2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience–
Eph 2:3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

It really does take discernment to see the difference in the Presence of the Holy Ghost moving upon a soul or a group of souls being “filled” with the Spirit and the presence of a beguiling spirit that is always at work in the sons of disobedience.

Notice, Paul says they are “sons”, just “sons” of disobedience.

This is how Paul approached “disobedience” in the book of Romans:::>

Rom 1:5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,

    and

Rom 16:25 Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages
Rom 16:26 but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith–
Rom 16:27 to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen.

    • Hi Michael….

Yes, that’s Tommy Bates playing the piano! You’re right he sure “tickles the ivory well too”

      Amen.. (good post Michael)

Music from Broken Chords

Down in the human heart, crush'd by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. From the Hymn "Rescue the Perishing" by Fanny J. Crosby
