Does the USA have special favor in the eyes of God?

Interesting article and some interesting comments to the question.

USA Today-Religion:

Does the USA have special favor in the eyes of God?

Republicans are making political hay by reviving this idea — as old as the first colonialists — that this is a land favored by the Lord with an exceptional destiny, according to Karen Tumulty in today’s Washington Post.

She reviews the latest outbreak of “American Exceptionalism”set in the context of hinting that GOP talkers say President Obama is not on board with this idea.

But not all Americans are on board with it and some theologians consider it blasphemy to imply that God waited from the time of creation to find one small nation to be the special favorite above all others.

  1. Psalm 33:12 – I think that answers the question.

  2. PJ,

Thanks for sharing! The links may do well to help me stay on track with my thoughts concerning a post or two that I’m working on regarding nationalism and faith.

I got a kick out of the rhetorical question presented in the USA Today article. Picture Stephen Colbert saying ‘American Exceptionalism’: Is God’s favor political? . 🙂 Almost sounds like a journalistic equivalent to the response “Where does the Bible say that?”.

    Thanks again.

Grace and peace be with you.

      Aha! 🙂

Glad the link was helpful Christopher

  3. Could we compare the governmental excesses, abuses, bigotry, special interests, intrigues, scandals, etc. in the past 234 years to any other longer established nation & think we come off more righteous than they are? And what about the social & economic abuses of our free market economy taking advantage of the poor & Native Americans & the slaves? If you look at our history, it seems to be a very compressed history of the world even though America can claim to be the youngster in the family of nations. It hasn’t represented the kingdom any better than the other nations. It has not been salt & light to the world, but it has allowed the true saints amazing freedoms to do so in the Name of their only King. America has had many advantages other nations have not, yet proportionally, we have squandered much of it on a life of luxury, ease, highest standard of living in all history, etc. I would not want to be weighed in the Divine Scale of the nations as a citizen of these United States. If our allegiance is to this earthly country & not our heavenly one, the divine disfavor will not be something to brag about. The neo-theocracy ‘stamp-of-approval’ the ultra-religious types are seeking will not be given by the One that judges the heart, not the GNP, number of WMDs or any other earthly qualifier. Lord have mercy… 😦

  4. Over time i have grown to actually detest the term “American Exceptionalism”.

When i hear politicians, talking-heads, and even Christians use the term i feel sick.

The word tells us pride comes before a fall. If the degree or severity of the fall is in any way comparable to the degree of pride, …..well, i’ll leave it there.

Amen Joseph, may the Lord have mercy.

    • Meanwhile, in “Soviet” Russia, iron-man Putin runs his country like a criminal enterprise, complete with shady deals and missing bodies; Russian Mafia sells weaponry to communist gorillas and criminal gangs south of the border; Russian spies infiltrate the various branches of government; and thousands or tends of thousands of nuclear shelters are being built, along with modernized nuclear weapons.

And in the United States, alleged Christians insult American exceptionalism; revile their own country; challenge and dismantle traditional culture while embracing a negation culture.. and in your case, in the name of “true” Christianity; and last of all, undermine those parts of America that enable it to survive.

Clue time, there is a communist power in the world that has infiltrated countries, states and religions. Their goal is world-wide domination, and Christianity is one of its many enemies. America stands in the way of their domination. When America is gone, “civilization itself will fall back 400 years”, as a writer once told me.

But none of that matters to any of you, because you’re Holy, and America is evil. For this reason, and not for any others you have mentioned, does America deserve some divine judgment. Because of lukewarm traitors using Christianity to defend their evil, inaction and stupidity… which will bring evil upon all free peoples, regardless of their political affiliation or religion. The fires of hell cannot burn hot enough for a traitor of their own religion, especially for a traitor too foolish to know their crime against God.

    • Just like the Jews in Israel rejected Jesus because he refused to get involved in their patriotic revolt against Caesar, so men will reject us because we refuse to lower ourselves to invest in a political battle in this dying world. TRUE Christians in the early church, including most of the apostles, preferred die a martyr’s death than to abandon Christ for a political crusade. Thus it is with true Christians today. Those trying to make their nest in this world under the guise of “Christianity” will end in bed with the Antichrist and that part of the devil’s little end game is not far off.

  5. Certainly the “new Israel” is following in the footsteps of the old Israel. There is Israel, the people of God, and there is that other Israel, the wannabe’s. The counterfeit Israel. The fleshly Israel. The Israel based on the power of man rather than the power of God. That Israel was NOT God’s idea, but man’s. And they who embrace it boast, not in the power of God, but in their own power and glory.

“Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.”

That is indeed the blasphemy that is theocracy. God is merely the puppet to justify the power of the usurpers.

  6. And in the United States, alleged Christians insult American exceptionalism; revile their own country; challenge and dismantle traditional culture while embracing a negation culture.. and in your case, in the name of “true” Christianity

    Thank you “Glenn Beck”

    • Note how Livius exhibits the fervor of Paul when he was stoning the Christians. He was certain that he was doing the will of God. Its a different time, but the same spirit that is at work here. He presents not one quote from the Bible to support his position, because there are none. His “religion” is a prime example of civil religion in America today. They are not worshipers of God, but worshipers of the “American system” and “American culture” and “American civilization”, etc, etc, etc. Idolaters pretending to be Christians.

“Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.” – John 18.35-36

“He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” – John 3.18-19

“And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.” – Exodus 19.6
(Hint: The above is NOT a reference to the *nation* of Israel, but rather to the people of God)

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.” – 1 Peter 2.9-10
(Hint: The above is NOT a reference to the United States, but rather to the people of God)

“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.” – Hebrews 11.13-16

Brethren, we need to be ready to offer up our lives for Him because this world is coming apart and the pagans around us are angry and ready to murder us because we don’t buy into their quasi religious agenda. We need to pray for God’s protection and for His strength to face these challenges, because things are not likely to get better soon. And we need also to pray that He will open the eyes of the blind so they will not get sucked into the lap of the Antichrist system that lies at our doorstep.

  7. ….this world is coming apart and the pagans around us are angry ….

George, what i never saw coming (30 yrs ago) was that most of the angry pagans, would be arriving on the scene in the name of Christ and Christianity.

The way things are lining up, the church may end up facing a modern, 21st century version of the crusades.

    • What a fool you are. If only we were so lucky as to muster up a crusade! The fact that you even said that displays just how out of touch you are with the real problems facing society.

    • “The way things are lining up, the church may end up facing a modern, 21st century version of the crusades.”

Or, perhaps, more like the inquisition? It will be OK to be a “Christian” (as long as one faithfully bows to Caesar as well).

  8. What a fool you are. If only we were so lucky as to muster up a crusade!

Livius/”Ricardo” there is no talking to you….wasn’t a year ago, and not now. 😦

By all means, lets “muster up” a crusade:

Some of our men cut off the heads of their enemies; others shot them with arrows, so that they fell from the towers; others tortured them longer by casting them into the flames. Piles of heads, hands and feet were to be seen in the streets of the city. It was necessary to pick one’s way over the bodies of men and horses. But these were small matters compared to what happened at the temple of Solomon, a place where religious services ware ordinarily chanted. What happened there? If I tell the truth, it will exceed your powers of belief. So let it suffice to say this much at least, that in the temple and portico of Solomon, men rode in blood up to their knees and bridle reins. (Historian Raymond of Agiles describing the capture of Jerusalem by the Crusaders in 1099)

    • Torturing sinners is quite the relief for stress. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. Let me know when Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin come to Martyr you both. Let me know also when the theocracy is all setup too, that way I can maybe get a high ranking position while there is still time.

  9. I believe true believers that pursue a gospel minded lifestyle will positively impact their society for the better. It is the spiritual result of expanding the ‘true’ kingdom vs. a nationalistic amalgam mixing religious traditions & political posturing to bring about a temporal social order that mirrors certain moral measuring sticks. In theory, there could be a totalitarian regime that could make it a crime to be anything but moral in behavior & force compliance thru severe punishment. Would that condition be what Jesus intended as His Father’s kingdom come upon the earth as in heaven? Jesus already addressed the uber-religious Jews that enjoyed a unique existence in the Roman world with its separate worship expression & associated traditions. Yet that was not the Israel or the religious elite Jesus acknowledged as being exempt from the judgment to come.

All attempts at elevating America to the same status as Herod’s Temple & its special status in the greater Pax Romana in for a surprise when it is weighed in the divine scales of the nations against the true kingdom & finds itself wanting. There is no special status reserved for these United States of America nor any divine favor intended to be restored or granted to the Dominionist idolaters & their power seeking minions. Wanting to be ‘top dog’ in the neo-theocracy of a so-called ‘Christianized’ America the most heinous defilement of the gospel that has been foisted upon a growing number of clueless people in this country. It is a sad mixture of entitlement, elitism, me-firstism, God’s-on-my-side perspective the Pharisees had when challenging Jesus & His topsy-turvy gospel message condemning their religious conclusions & global domination expectations. The Messiah rode into Jerusalem on the colt of a donkey proclaiming the end of enmity between God & man (divine peace), not on a horse of conquest intended to overthrow earthly kingdoms for bragging rights of His followers. Lord have mercy… 😦

    • What can I say about your comment? Its all true. Torturing “sinners” may relieve stress in some perverse sort of way, but its not in alignment with the Gospel of Jesus. Its more like how Paul relieved his stress before he was converted. And, for my part, I would not expect Glen Beck or Sarah Palin to come to my house to “martyr” me. But there have already been cases of attempted political crimes where the assailant attributed their guidance to none other than Glen Beck. The famous religious fanatics of history seldom committed murder with their own hands. They leave that to other people who read between the lines and get the message. The Glen Becks and Sarah Palin’s of this world know that all they have to do is speak boldly, and other people will do their dirty work by acting boldly. The sort of rhetoric that Livius is spewing out here is just the ticket to get somebody not gifted with a full deck motivated into action. Violent talk bears violent fruit.

  10. Violent talk bears violent fruit.

    Amen George

  11. To Livius I would say “Get a clue”. Communism today exists only in a few isolated and dysfunctional little countries like North Korea and Cuba. The Russians gave up on communism ages ago. Not that they are less dangerous today than back then. But don’t try to play the old communist under the bed game. Russia today is a nearly, but not quite, totalitarian society. But if Russia is scary, we should be more concerned about China. China is a near total dictatorship managing a largely capitalist economy. It is probably more similar to Nazi Germany than to the old Maoist state from which it has emerged. It, like Nazi Germany, is very fascinated by technology and very tightly controlled from the top down. While not as expansionist as Nazi Germany, they are every bit as committed to building a world class military force able to veto every move the US might make. We should ALL be concerned about that. Not living in fear, but concerned. But what to do as citizens? Support the conservatives who are in bed with the very corporate empires that are exporting all of our jobs and technology to China? The whole “American Exceptionalism” thing is empty flag waving symbolism. It doesn’t do a think to address our debt problem nor the fact that China is outrunning us economically AND militarily. And it doesn’t do a thing to address the challenges we face with Mr Putin or the petty dictators in Pyongyang and Havana (not to mention the clown in Caracas). And it also doesn’t do a thing to address the challenges of the Islamists (other than to further inflame their passions against us). The ONLY way these challenges are going to be effectively addressed is if American citizens in large numbers turn to God for wisdom and guidance as individuals instead of trying to achieve national salvation through political action. Simply slapping a Christian banner over America and doing a “name it and claim it” for protection from God is not going to achieve squat.

    [KJV] II Chronicles 7:14
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Note that God says “If my people”, not “If my exceptional nation”.
