Michele Bachmann: Natural disasters a warning to D.C.

Speaking in Florida, Michele Bachmann ventures into the risky territory of attributing political motive to natural disasters, calling the events of the last week a wake-up call from above:

“I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.”  (Michele Bachmann: Natural disasters a warning to D.C.)

I’m sorry but this is disgusting. Bachmann should be deeply concerned that she’s not only attributing these disasters to God’s warning to Washington, but that she claims to speak for Him.

Is there any level politicians won’t sink to? Apparently not.

  1. I suspect that before all this is through we will see that there is a price for trying to use God for political gain. This is on the level of the money changers in the temple and we know what Jesus thought of them. I don’t think a lot of the Mormons or their false religion, but at least Romney seems to have more sense than this. If evangelicals and fundamentalists take this seriously they will pay a price for it. God is not mocked. There are plenty of things going on in America today that God is not happy with, no doubt about that, but I doubt that “government spending” is very high on that list or even on that list at all. Hang on, its going to be a wild ride from here to election day.

    • Well, according to latest reports, this statement by Bachmann was intended to be a joke. But still, I think it reflects poor judgement to invoke the name of God in jokes, political jokes especially. If Bachmann thinks that spending needs to be cut, which she obviously does, and I agree with her to a degree, then she needs to address the issue seriously and not spike the whole argument with religious innuendo.

  2. George,

Joking with the Name of God is not wise and according to the Commandments, a sin. The Holy Spirit doesn’t lead us that way to joke with God’s Names so one wonders what she was doing or meant by what is reported she said. Also, He causes repentance and brings one by it to receive the forgiveness of sins.

I have no doubt God can get anyone’s attention at any time, one on one or in mass when He wants too. After all, He got ours! 🙂

It seems the Dominionist’s mindset confuses God by His nature, natural occurrences, like earthquakes and hurricanes; and God by His signs and wonders when He uses us to proclaim His Gospel?

It does seem to appear we are entering into some troubling times these days in the United States and in other nations around the world. It really is hard to accept any news that is reported in print, over the internet, radio and t.v. carte blanc. All of it has to be weighed, holding to what is good and disregarding what is not. We need to be ever vigilant and alert, staying filled with the Holy Spirit and read up in His Word and let His still small Voice guide us through the day, day by day.

Thank you for that comment. I hadn’t thought it through that far, but I think you are on to something. It is as if the Gospel has become a means to a political end rather than a message of PERSONAL salvation. PERSONAL salvation is becoming replaced by NATIONAL salvation. Hey … Wait a minute … Isn’t this something of a parallel again to what liberal “Christians” have been doing all these years? The difference, of course, being that for liberals it would be SOCIAL salvation as opposed to NATIONAL salvation for conservatives … neither of which, of course, resembles the Gospel of Jesus.

  3. George,

Ever heard of “entitlements” and that other more dreaded word, “reparations”?

It seems people are now entitled to God’s promises and glory without going through the Cross.

And, of course, God owes us for our losses because of the evils of mankind even though He is the owner of all things; the heavens, the earth, the world and everything in it.

Now, there is a place for God’s Hand in bringing to this world justice as we learn when studying Proverbs.

My son Zadok came to me yesterday afternoon and sat down and said, “dad” lets go through Proverbs 29 line by line. Wow ah, wow ah !!

Pro 29:2 When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan.

Pro 29:25 The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe.
Pro 29:26 Many seek the face of a ruler, but it is from the LORD that a man gets justice.
Pro 29:27 An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, but one whose way is straight is an abomination to the wicked.

There really is nothing left for the Righteous to do because Jesus did it all for us already. We can sit back and be kept as Peter writes about it, here:

1Pe 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Oh well, I plan on voting come election time. I just don’t know who I am voting for, yet! 🙂

Music from Broken Chords

Down in the human heart, crush'd by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. From the Hymn "Rescue the Perishing" by Fanny J. Crosby
