Things That Make You Go Hmmm….

Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain says that God told him to run for president, National Journal reports.

“I prayed and prayed and prayed,” Cain told about 100 members of the Georgia Young Republicans in Atlanta on Saturday. “I’m a man of faith, I had to do a lot of praying for this one, more praying than I’d ever done before in my life. And when I finally realized that it was God saying that this is what I needed to do, I was like Moses. ‘You’ve got the wrong man, Lord. Are you sure?'”

Cain isn’t the only Republican candidate who says God convinced them to run, however.

In May, before officially announcing her candidacy, Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) said that she felt a “calling” to seek the GOP nomination. “I’ve had this calling and tugging on my heart that this is the right thing to do,” Bachmann said. In June, in an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Bachmann reiterated her comments about God telling her to run for political office

  1. Our imaginations are powerful.

    Our justifications are equally so.

The opportunity for the enemy to use such public pronouncements against them and the Church is enormous and fraught with carelessness and it does not seem to me to be sound reasoning from the Lord, who is to each of us our wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption. I am not convinced this sort of public pronouncement furthers the Grace of God but rather opens up the opportunity for public ridicule?

When I read something like this being said (in this case by Cain and Bachmann running for the Presidency) that God said to them or God is leading them to do it, I hesitate and ponder the true meaning of verses such as the following cited below, then, I hunker down because of the offense that is coming and the fallout and the scorn that most surely will come upon God’s people, the Church, me, you, after what they said God said to them or God was leading them to do doesn’t come to pass.

In the first set of verses it is Jesus Himself teaching that we should not offend the ruling public officials even though we are exempt in the world we live in. In the second set the Apostle Paul is teaching us to be very careful about Faith so as not to be offensive to others by what we do or say. The third set of verses seems to me to be kicker in that the Apostle Paul stresses that we need to not do things in anyway so as to bring fault or discredit upon the ministry of the Lord. If these two are indeed Christians and want to enter into this public ministry, running for the highest office of the United States, it behooves them to not make such blatant statements like they have made. They should, instead, in my view, be wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove in the public forums that their politics will thrust them into :

Mat 17:24 When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the tax?”
Mat 17:25 He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?”
Mat 17:26 And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free.
Mat 17:27 However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.”

1Co 10:32 Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God,
1Co 10:33 just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.

2Co 6:3 We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry,

I believe the most obvious question one would want an answer to is why God would direct so many people to run for an office that only one person can occupy at a time?

Do I want a “spirit-filled” born again Christian to win the election? Absolutely. Just on God’s terms, not theirs.

      Amen Michael.

It does make you wonder, doesn’t it…

We’ve had a number of politicians in recent years who are eager to attribute their chosen actions to “God told me…etc”

Some years back i recall reading about President G. W. Bush saying he decided to invade Iraq because “God told him to” and wondering if he hadn’t confused God’s voice with the voice of Dick Cheney.

  2. I would be more apt to believe Cain if he said God directed him not to vote!

  3. Yes, The Spirit of our King-Christ Jesus, Lord and God, has said “yes, all those things in the Scripture are false and for the weak. Slay your enemies and show no mercy. Defend capitalism and American exceptionalism”.

With a seared conscience, it’s hard to hear the gentle whisper from the Father of Light

Music from Broken Chords

Down in the human heart, crush'd by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. From the Hymn "Rescue the Perishing" by Fanny J. Crosby
