‘Morning Joe’ Confronts Rev. Franklin Graham Over ‘Amazing Double Standard’

(with video)

You can read it all at the link above but the gist of it can be wrapped up by these quotes;

Graham refused to definitively say that President Obama is a Christian. When asked if he believed that he was, Graham said that people would “need to ask President Obama” to get an answer. ”

When co-host Willie Geist pressed him to say whether he believed Obama was a Christian, Graham maintained that he “cannot answer that question for anybody.” However, his answer on Rick Santorum’s Christianity was a resounding yes. “His values are so clear on moral issues,” he said. “No question, I believe he is a man of faith.”

Contributor John Heilemann took issue with this. “That is an amazing double standard you just applied,” he alleged.

“You have to look at what a person does with his life,” Graham defended.

He also would not say whether he believed Romney is a Christian. “Most Christians would not recognize Mormonism as part of the Christian faith,” he said.

He noted that Gingrich has been married several times, but that he believed that he was a Christian.

Geist questioned this. “So Newt Gingrich is a Christian, but you’re not sure that President Obama is. And you said based on the way they lived their lives.”

Someone off-screen could be heard saying, “Wow.”

Its pretty amazing how one is unequivocally deemed a “true-blue” Christian in America today.

  2. I was saved listening to Billy Graham in 1975. But Franklin Graham is a bold patriot and has consistantly allowed his patriotism to significantly affect his spiritual life. It is most unfortunate, and it gives open evidence to the idolatry of nationalism.

Even those on the Morning Joe panel (none of whom claim to be born again) saw the inconsitancy and double standard in Graham’s perspective.

    • Yes, he’s definitely not his father.😦

But you know Rick, whats really disturbing (and down-right spooky) is i’d wager many evangelicals don’t see the inconsistency, and are ‘amening’ Graham today on Christian discussion forums all over the internet.

  4. Obviously logic does not enter into the picture since Mr Graham contradicted himself over and over in terms of how he evaluates whether or not a given individual is a Christian. Newt is obviously “in” in Graham’s mind simply because he has made a practice of saying one thing and doing something else, whereas the President and Mr Romney pay the price for being more consistent in the way the express their religious convictions. And then their is Mr Santorum who is “in” without question in spite of the fact that he belongs to a church that most evangelicals would view with at least some degree of suspicion. A church famous for advancing the concept of graceless works based salvation that can be earned via indulgences alone. But, of course, for Mr Graham, faith alone is good enough in Mr Gingrich’s case even though James asks whether dead faith can save, and works alone is good enough in Mr Santorum’s case even though the Bible rates them as filthy rags. This whole thing of labeling candidates as “Christian” or “questionable” has become a silly game. The question voters should be asking is NOT whether they are “Christian”, but whether they are fit to lead our nation. Some times I wonder whether I am going to wake up to a situation where people decide to have some close friend from church try to operate on their cancer instead of a pagan (in their mind anyway) doctor.

    • This whole thing of labeling candidates as “Christian” or “questionable” has become a silly game.

It sure has become a game George…a very dangerous game.

  5. The issue here is not so much whether Obama is a Christian for me. The fundamental problem the Christian right continue to have is that they believe America is a Christian nation and therefore ought to be ruled by a Christian as defined by them. If you share that assessment what they doing is logical. I do not share such assessment. If you kindly direct me to definition of a Christian nation using the bible – book, chapter and verse. And until that notion that America is christian notion is rejected we will continue to have the kind of thinking Graham is demonstrating here. Ultimately we do not know a man’s heart but my fallible assessment is that Obama is a nominal Christian (by that i mean a cultural/society based definition Not new testament definition) like millions of Americans. A good portion of Republicans are nominal Christians. Personally, I want Romney to win the nomination to face Obama. The Grahams of this world will have to make a decision then. And i for one just can’t wait to see what their reaction will be.God wont be any less if America does not have a Christian as president. Daniel served under Nebuchadnezzar. I really doubt he was pro life. God used Cyrus a pagan king to help the Jews. Graham should preach the gospel to all. Some Roman Catholics he’s declaring Christian may need that gospel. How many Americans are comforted and convinced that they are Christians (New testament definition) by the Christian right because they don’t do abortion or are not gays? Is that what it really takes? If Graham sticks with preaching the wretchedness of man and their need for the saving work of Jesus – how many of his allies will still hang out with him not to talk of the much derided “evilest liberals” Okay I’ll stop now

    • Amen, amen! I agree with everything you wrote RxY….

      Good comment!

    • “Some Roman Catholics he’s declaring Christian may need that gospel. How many Americans are comforted and convinced that they are Christians (New testament definition) by the Christian right because they don’t do abortion or are not gays? Is that what it really takes?”

I simply cannot believe the way that evangelicals are cozying up, not only to Catholics, but to the Catholic Church these days. And the huge hypocrisy that hits one right between the eyes on the issue is the strident focus on the issue of abortion in the midst of so much other sexual immorality and scandal on the part of both protestant AND Catholic clergy that gets swept aside and sanitized as much as possible by both church organizations. A priest’s punishment for molesting children (often in a homosexual setting) is usually to be transfered to another parish. A pastor’s punishment for moral depravity is usually some short period of whatever after which he is back in the pulpit again like nothing had happened. Where are the people out on the streets protesting these atrocities? But in the midst of all of this, people instead get all wound up over abortion and even birth control. Somehow its unacceptable in society to physically murder a fetus (which it should be, of course), but the same people seem to have no real problem with abusing and spiritually killing that fetus once it is born. The first sin has only temporal consequences while the second can have eternal consequences. That is just another bit of evidence that todays Christians are so caught up in temporal morality that they have lost sight of true biblical morality. The Catholic church has ALWAYS been insensitive on this issue, but the protestants are catching up with them fast.

  6. Gingrich: “[In reference to America’s Enemies vis. Andrew Jackson] Kill them” and adultering.
Santorum with his mortgage corruption and other congressional buyouts.
    Cain with accusations of adultery.

Yeah Graham, what a standard. I feel men like him are more akin to Rabbi Akiva propping up Bar-Kochba than any of the disciples under Jesus’ wings. Always propping up Zealots, always looking towards violence and bloodshed. Their offer of ‘Peace and Security’ is a lie. Pax Americana is fool’s gold. The only true Peace is of Messiah and His nation is the Kingdom of God that knows no boundary.

    • Pax Americana is fool’s gold

      True Cal.

The only true Peace is of Messiah and His nation is the Kingdom of God that knows no boundary.

      Amen…

  7. Sounds like a great Pharisee

if all you gotta do is be moral and exhibit good values, you can get into Heaven

    • You know i thought about this last night, about all the ‘good’ moral people i’ve personally known. Many of them were outstanding parents and neighbors, and exhibited excellent moral standards in their public and private lives. But they were not born again.

      What’s occurring in America today is we are no longer looking to the biblical standard;

Romans 10:9, 13. “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. . . . For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

John 3:16 – 18. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

but are being conditioned to judge people’s salvation by what “we” consider good moral values. And folks, that is a dangerous spot to be in.

Webster’s dictionary describes the word moral as,

of or relating to principles of right and wrong in behavior: conforming to a standard of right behavior:

Synonym Discussion of MORAL: ethical, virtuous, righteous, noble mean conforming to a standard of what is right and good. moral implies conformity to established sanctioned codes or accepted notions of right and wrong.

Read that last sentence again, “moral implies conformity to established sanctioned codes or accepted notions of right and wrong”

What this tells me is the definition of moral can change, depending on who sets (or establishes) what those moral codes are. Do we really want to give heed to someone (or a national leader) who defines morality according to his or her ideas of what it means? I don’t! And this is what the extreme political right-wing is trying to do. And now, we hear them applying their personal definition of what is moral and what is not to proclaim publicly who is saved and who is not!

Yes Grant, these folks sound like the pharisees.

  8. ……and someone (me) is also off-screen saying WOW! 😦 Whatever next?

  9. Personally I do not have any inward witness that any of the Republican candidates are born again believers, and the same ith the President. But that is why it is most dangerous as a preacher to go on these shows and discuss politics.

Rev. Graham has been seriously compromised by politics. In fact, last year Graham said Donald Trump would bring some integrity back to the White House. Donald Trump? Seriously? See what politics and nationalism does.

Rick i know this topic isn’t funny, but i laughed out-loud at the idea of ‘The’ Donald bringing integrity to the White House.🙂

  10. Is Franklin Graham born again?😦

Music from Broken Chords

Down in the human heart, crush'd by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. From the Hymn "Rescue the Perishing" by Fanny J. Crosby
