What We Believe About Israel

Steve Lumbley (Apostasy Watch) has posted “What We Believe About Israel”.  I wanted to share it.

1. We fully support Israel’s right to exist and her right to defend herself from all foreign and domestic enemies. We also agree that there are many good political reasons for the US to consider Israel an ally in that region.

2. We acknowledge the sovereign hand of God in the rise and fall of nations upon the earth. It is beyond dispute that God has allowed the re-gathering of ethnic Jews into the land originally designated for Abraham.

3. We do not believe this re-gathering of ethnic Jews constitutes a fulfillment of Old Covenant promises to Abraham because all those promises were and are fulfilled in Christ. (Jer 31:31, Mat 26:28, 2Cor 3:6, Heb 8:13, Heb 11:9-10 & 15)

4. Furthermore, all the Old Covenant promises of dwelling in the land were conditional based on obedience to God.(Lev 25:18, Jos 24:20, Ps 37:3, Jer 7:3-7) Natural Israel today is, for the most part still in rebellion to God as they continue to reject Messiah. Since they reject the son, neither do they have the Father (John 5:23, 1John 2:22-23)

5. The leaders of natural Israel today are as feckless as their forefathers. They have made treaties with their enemies contrary to Gods word (Ex 23:32, Num 33:55, Deut 7:2) They have divided the land for gain (peace) contrary to Gods word (Dan 11:39) They rely on their own strength and the strength of their allies in the world (Isaiah 31:1) In the end no good can possibly come of this rebellious behavior.

6. We reject the dispensationalist idea that the Kingdom of God was “put on hold” when Israel rejected Messiah. We believe Jesus when he said the Kingdom would be taken from apostate Israel and given to a nation bearing fruit (Mat 21:43 Deut 32:21 1Peter 2:9). True Israel never ceased to exist, it simply took another form after Pentecost. True Israel now is a spiritual kingdom (John 18:36) that exists worldwide and is made up of one new man (Eph 2:15)

7. Therefore we believe the only true continuation of the Abrahamic faith in the earth today is found in the church, the ekklesia, the called out ones who have been born again by the Spirit of God. The true Israel of God is made up only of those who have received the promised Messiah by faith (Rom 2:28, Rom 9:6, Gal 3:16)

8. This does not mean God has rejected ethnic Jews because the church began with ethnic Jews and since that time many ethnic Jews have come to faith in Messiah. However to be re-grafted into the natural olive tree (the true Israel of God) they must come through the cross of Christ and not through some national geopolitical entity. (Mat 21:19, Rom 11:23)

9. We believe there are ethnic Jews in natural Israel who are appointed unto salvation therefore it is vital that Christians present them with the unadulterated gospel. We do them no favors by making them believe they are still Gods chosen people in their current apostate condition. The visible church, particularly here in the west, has forfeited her commission to take the gospel to all nations beginning with Israel (Acts 1:8) and replaced it with a patronizing idolatry of apostate Judaism. Ethnic Jews in Israel will never ‘look upon Him whom they pierced’ as long as they see the US as their protector and benefactor and the church blessing their blasphemy and false religion..

10. We recognize that many of our brothers and sisters in Christ hold what we believe to be an idolatrous view of natural Israel. We do not reject fellowship with our brothers and sisters but we pray for the day when they will see their true calling to preach the gospel to the Jewish people even though it may bring rejection and vilification from the people to whom they are sent. It is better to have praise from God rather than praise from men (John 12:43)

  1. Absolutely right on target. I am going to send this to my oldest daughter, who insists the Abrahamic covenant is in effect with the nation of Israel today.

  2. All I can see is 10X amen on this one. Steve is right on the mark in my opinion. The only place I would have a minor problem with is on point #6. I believe that the “Israel of God” ALWAYS has been a spiritual nation. In Old Testament days, the Israel of God was hidden within the physical nation of Israel, but was never one and the same with it. And even then there were a scattering of Gentiles included in this Israel of God. The only change in New Testament times is that now this reality is much more manifest to the observer. ( … or perhaps not? 😦 )

  3. Steve did an excellent teaching on his Friday night online bible study 9th March ,www.apostasywatch.com “The Withered Fig Tree” the Kingdom is taken from national Israel and given to another nation that will produce fruit. I listen on Paltalk Express on Saturday mornings here in Australia and have learnt much through his teachings.

  4. It doesn’t become any clearer than this?

    Can it??

I have been musing over Elijah the Tishbite, the Prophet sent to the kingdom of Israel. Once Jezebel hears what “God” did through him to the prophets of Baal, she sends a messenger to Elijah and after hearing “her” words he flees to another kingdom, that of “Judah” for protection from her and from the king of Israel.

Here we have a Prophet of God “sent” to the kingdom Israel with the Word of God, not Judah. But he flees to Judah and takes safe cover there from the wife of the King of Israel. Elijah understood authority and the power of a king’s errant authority, too, even ill advised authority done at the hands of a wicked woman!

We see something quite the same, God’s Authority, with Paul the Apostle and Peter the Apostle understanding of God’s Authority in that God had set territories for each of these men of God to function in various parts of the known world at the time of their ministries although both retreated and returned to Jerusalem to have the “then” question of the civil matter of one’s salvation by Faith or circumcision settled that was dogging them both in their territorial ministries where they were sent to bring the Word of the Lord to the peoples sitting in darkness.

Today is no different. I recently was listening to a message from a Pastor who identified God as the “God of sinners” not of good people. God is known throughout the world as the God of Abraham/sinner, Isaac/sinner and Jacob/really really deceitful sinner!

All, sinners and good people, are equally sinners before God. God did not come in the flesh, to die, to be buried and to be raised from the dead to heal the healthy, but the sick! He has settled it and set the terms and conditions of the salvation of His Elect!

In these coming days the sanctification work of the Holy Spirit among sinners will become clearer and clearer as He continues training us to understand He is the God of the whole earth and of all people. He has established His manner of rule. He uses sinners from every walk of life, kindred, tongue and nation to advance His Word, not man’s.

If we are not careful, whether we hail from a Jewish home or a Gentile home, because God is the God of all people, we, too, might find ourselves unclear about things like Elijah was with God no matter how historically successful we have been.

Our walk of Faith is by the Spirit of Faith that God gives us. He sends Jesus Christ, Lord of lords and King of kings to all walks of life, kindred, tongues and nations. How God interprets what He has spoken and how it comes out is God’s business. How we accept it is ours and being the sinners that we are, our ability to interpret and accept His Word is in dire need of His Savior’s interpretation, not ours!

If we can hear this interesting “Word” Elijah said to the widow at Zarephath, we might be able to hear the same interesting “Word” of the Lord for all mankind and especially for the Elect living in Israel today:

Here is what is recorded Elijah did and said:

1Ki 17:8 Then the word of the LORD came to him,
1Ki 17:9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.”
1Ki 17:10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.”
1Ki 17:11 And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”
1Ki 17:12 And she said, “As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.”
1Ki 17:13 And Elijah said to her,
“Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son.
1Ki 17:14 For thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the LORD sends rain upon the earth.'”

1Ki 17:15 And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days.

Elijah fully understood the widow’s intent! He did not stand in her way just appealed to her good senses to “do” the Word of the Lord before doing what she was intending on doing, which was: “… And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.” …”

We need to remember that Our God is the God of Hope, even for those Elected from among the people of present day Israel, just as He is for everyone else:

Rom 15:12 And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.”
Rom 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

So, this article clearly establishes that things afoot in Israel today simply are not as they seem to the public eye!

Is Jesus Christ shaken by all the turmoil of the Middle East?

    No, I think not.

I say it is precisely what Jesus Christ is doing in the Middle East that is producing such turmoil!

Are there Jews in Israel today who are fully on board with what Jesus the Messiah is doing for them that the Bible teaches us He is doing as both Lord of lords and King of kings?

We should rejoice in that truth and fully embrace these people of the Truth of God’s Own Word:

Rom 9:8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.

Rom 11:7 What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened,
Rom 11:8 as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.”
    Rom 11:9 And David says, “Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them;
Rom 11:10 let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs forever.”
Rom 11:11 So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! Rather through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous.
Rom 11:12 Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!

It may very well be, but, I am not sure God is waiting for anyone of us to figure these things out, is He? 🙂

We all ought to repent and receive the forgiveness for our own sins in the Name of Jesus Christ, Lord of lords and King of kings, King and Lord of every tribe, kindred, tongue and people!

  5. Is God through with the nation Israel?

    • God has NEVER dealt with the nation of Israel as a PHYSICAL nation. The nation of Israel that are the chosen of God has ALWAYS been a SPIRITUAL nation, a nation within a nation. Many of the ancient Israelites died OBVIOUSLY in an UNSAVED, UNCHOSEN state. Just being Israelite by blood has NEVER been sufficient for salvation and STILL ISN’T. That is what is so obvious that the blind refuse to see.

    • God is not through with Israel but the Kingdom will never again come from an earthly geopolitical entity. The true Israel of God is a spiritual kingdom made up of all who receive the promise by faith. And as George pointed out above true Israel has always been made up of those who are of the faith of Abraham.

  6. I think that the promise God gave to Abraham was not conditional.

Gamal, your very next line says you DO believe the promises are conditional,

Its the promise that he will be the eternal father of Abraham descends forever and ever but Abraham descends have to obey their father

  7. PJ,
I was wondering of your explanation of 1Cor 10:32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God.
As well I would like to share the helpful article “Jews, Gentiles & the Church”, by Brother Dave Hunt, The Berean Call:

    • Hi ntmyhn…

I was wondering of your explanation of 1Cor 10:32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God.

If you place the verse in context to the entire chapter Paul is saying not to offend by questioning the source of food offered in the marketplace, or set before them…

23All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient. All things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify. 24Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wellbeing. 25Whatsoever is sold in the meat market, that eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake; 26for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof. 27If any of those who do not believe bid you to a feast, and ye are disposed to go, whatsoever is set before you eat, asking no question for conscience’ sake.

28But if any man say unto you, “This is offered in sacrifice unto idols,” then eat it not for his sake who showed it, and for conscience’ sake; for, “The earth is the Lord’s, and the fullness thereof.” 29I do not mean thine own conscience, but the other’s.

The bottom line is whatever done let it all be done for the Glory of God, in hope that some may be saved,

31Whether therefore ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 32Give no offense, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God, 33even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

I appreciate your link and i believe Dave Hunt is a fine man of God, but i cannot agree with many of his points in the article. Understandably so for he views scriptures pertaining to eschatology, modern day Israel, and the Church through the lens of dispensational theology.

    • Shannon,
The reason you used this scripture verse of 1 Corinthians 10:32 is the distinction of three different groups of people, Jews, Gentiles and the church of God, is that correct?

  8. Much of this is quite good but to deny the place that national Israel holds in the prophetic scheme of scripture is, in my opinion, a prejudiced view of scripture. If that is where this is going. The prophetic scheme is clearly linked with what God has promised Israel as a nation. The condition is that Israel must attain to these promises by acceptance and faith in Christ, which is what is foretold and inevitable. The promises were made to Abraham and to his Seed.

A remnant of Israel, as a nation, has been promised that will enter into that inheritance through faith in that Seed. There will be a time of Jacob’s trouble that will lead to a national repentance and acceptance of Jesus as Messiah.

If the intent of what is said here is a groundwork to claim that Israel’s reemergence in our day is a mere happenstance. That it has no bearing on what multitudes of believers, from even centuries ago, have concluded from the study of scripture, that a remnant of national Israel will one day be reestablished on earth as the chief of all nations. That here marks tangible evidence of a process of God’s dealings with Jacob, to establish a people identified as Israel yet claiming and belonging to Christ. The degree of revision to which the scriptures must endure in both Old and New Testaments to accommodate a view that excludes a national Israel and an earthly dominion for 1000 years with Christ as its’ king is so convoluted as to make me wonder if anything could ever be understood from the Bible.

    • I am struggling to understand all sides in the issue of modern day Israel. In your view, davo, you state that the acceptance of Christ is “foretold and inevitable”. Should Christians then go out and try to evangelize the Jewish people, if they already have the assurance and inevitability of salvation through covenant?

    • “The condition is that Israel must attain to these promises by acceptance and faith in Christ, which is what is foretold and inevitable.”

EXACTLY! And then they become part of spiritual Israel, the Church, the Israel of God. And the fulfilment of the promises will be an everlasting and consummate HEAVENLY KINGDOM, not a temporary earthly one.

“There will be a time of Jacob’s trouble that will lead to a national repentance and acceptance of Jesus as Messiah.”

And, for all we know, that time may have begun with the crucifixion or then abouts and be ongoing to this day.

As for your last paragraph, the fact of the matter is that the Jews were looking for just that, an earthly kingdom, when Jesus came the first time. He very strongly rebuked them for it and would have none of it. There is no way He is going to turn around and do it their way when He comes the second time. Those who are looking for that will be just as lost then as the Jews of Jesus day were lost at His first coming. They have to come to Him AND to His SPIRITUAL KINGDOM, not the other way around. So what if multitudes of believers have believed in a 1000 year earthly kingdom for centuries? Multiple heresies have been taught for centuries and believed by many. The early church, in fact, condemned millennialism in an early church council. There is non consensus on this matter in the church and it was widely debated in the early church up to the time it was pronounced to be heresy.

    • I would add that historically, the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Roman Catholic Church, AND MOST of the reformers INCLUDING Martin Luther and John Calvin have categorically rejected millennialism. Either NONE of these were able to understand the “obvious” teaching of scripture … or the millennialists (chiliasts) who are part of a modern movement that started only around 200 years ago have got it wrong. A LOT depends are whether you interpret the events of the world using THE BIBLE as a guide … OR whether you interpret the Bible using the EVENTS OF THE WORLD as a guide. The reformers chose the first path while modern day Christians tend to choose the latter.

  9. Are you saying we Jews don’t merit the status of election? Hmm, and I thought you all believed in unconditional election.

    • Derek, I *think* that what we are saying is that election has to do with SPIRITUAL Israel, which is, and always has been, distinct from the Jewish blood line. The Bible clearly teaches that God does not show partiality (Acts 10:34). If this is so, how then could he bias election toward a particular blood line? The answer has to do with the distinction between the blood descendants of Abraham and the covenant descendants of Abraham. This is why many of the Old Testament Jews were clearly NOT the people of God and more than a few Gentiles obviously were a part of that company. Thus both Jews AND Gentiles DO merit the status of election, but NOT on the basis of blood line, but rather on the basis of the FAITH of Abraham.

    • “What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded” Romans 11:7

      Israel – the body of the Jewish people, have not obtained that which they so earnestly desire, as they have been hitherto, the peculiar people of God; but the election hath obtained it – as many of them as have believed in Jesus Christ, and accepted salvation through him: this is the grand scheme of the election by grace;

God chooses to make those his peculiar people who believe in his Son, and none other shall enjoy the blessings of his kingdom. Those who would not receive him are blinded; they have shut their eyes against the light, and are in the very circumstances of those mentioned by the Prophet Isaiah: “For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.” 29:10 (Clarke’s Commentary on the Bible)

      *George, good post!

    • Derek,

for clarification, can you attest to the Son of God, born of a woman, is God’s only begotten Son and the Savior of the Elect and unconditionally?

  10. George,

When I was reading your response there, not sure to who, I thought of these verses from the song of King David,

1Ch 16:11 Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually!
1Ch 16:12 Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles and the judgments he uttered,
1Ch 16:13 O offspring of Israel his servant, sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!

Even King David understood the difference between a “natural” and a “Spiritual” Israel as we read there with those words “O offspring of Israel”..

As we should all recall, those who are doubting just how one is born again, we become the “offspring” of someone else. In this case, that someone else happens to be the Eternal Everpresent Lord Jesus Christ, who, Himself, became flesh and blood to redeem us from our human predicament brought about by the transgression of just one man, the federal head of all humanity, Adam!

And as Peter taught us, by the same revelation that King David operated with, we were born again by Our Heavenly Father, not by the will of man:

1Pe 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1Pe 1:4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
1Pe 1:5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Also, the only way anyone will ever come to know about their uniquely Spiritual inheritance is by hearing it from men of Faith, who were first given His Faith by the same Spirit of Faith that worked in King David, in Jacob and in Peter, just as we learn from Paul the Apostle when we read about this revelation, here:

2Co 4:13 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak,
2Co 4:14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.
2Co 4:15 For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
2Co 4:16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.

The natural nation that came from the loins of Abraham, the Hebrew, is in existence today and we, the world, are suffering that great turmoil of his sinful acts against the will of God as they fight one against another for that land.

It is the Spiritual nation of God that Isaac’s descendant, “Jacob” brought into existence and into view that is the subject of all the confusion today.

The Spiritual nation is that people the Apostle Paul writes about this way:

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
Eph 1:4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
Eph 1:5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
Eph 1:6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.

And the Apostle Peter writes about Her this way:

1Pe 1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,
1Pe 1:2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

There is a Spiritual Nation in the fallen world. There is this world ruled by Satan, too. One of Her responsibilities is to take the Good News of the Gospel of the Kingdom to every nation in existence in the world in every generation which would include the present State of Israel.

That the present State of Israel is a type and shadow of the coming end of all things just might be?

What is clear though is no one knows the time or season of the end of all things.

To use the present State of Israel to rally one’s eschatological belief may be prudent?

To use the gift of Faith God had given us, in any event, wherever you find yourself serving the Lord, worshiping Him in Spirit and Truth and declaring the Good News of the Gospel of the Kingdom is more prudent!

Anyway, it is the offspring of God’s Spiritual Nation walking on the planet that will remain stedfast and immovable as the world implodes in on herself as God finishes doing to Jesus Christ’s enemies what He has promised Him He would do for Him. All the while, then, the True Church will rise up in His Name and declare the Glory of the Lord to the ends of the earth and then the end shall come!:

Psa 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
Psa 110:2 The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!
Psa 110:3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.
Psa 110:4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Psa 110:5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
Psa 110:6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.
Psa 110:7 He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

    • Michael, you have covered so much here that is simply mind blowing! So much truth and revelation in such a small space. Truly the Church IS Israel and that includes Christ, the head of the Church. The Church is a place of rest for Jew and Gentile alike. Countless scriptures in the Old Testament imply that the Israel of God is more than just a physical nation and that, in fact, the Israel of God is composed of MANY nations. We have a loving redeemer and His free gift of salvation is available to ALL who call on Him, regardless of their ancestry.

  11. Welcome PJ 🙂
