Liberty University’s choice of Romney leads to angry student response

Liberty University students and alumni are accusing the Christian school of violating its own teachings by asking Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints whose adherents are called Mormons, to deliver its 2012 commencement address.

By Friday morning, more than 700 comments had been posted on the school’s Facebook page about the Thursday announcement – a majority of them decidedly against the Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr.’s invitation, citing that the school had taught them Mormonism isn’t part of the Christian faith.

“I can’t support Romney and I am happy I decided not to walk (in the commencement) this year,” wrote student Josh Bergmann. “Liberty University should have gotten a Christian to speak not someone who practices a cult. Shame on you Liberty University.”

Sarah Misch, 33, of Unionville, Virginia, who is also a student at the school said, “I am glad I am not graduating this year. I would not want to end my studies at a Christian university by being sent in to the world at commencement by a Mormon. We came to Liberty because of our faith in Jesus; not for political reasons.”

This is just sad! If you want to vote for Romney please do so by all means do you need to denigrate the Truth along the way. No Mormons are not Brothers in Christ! Just because they mention Jesus. The sun revolving around the earth and the earth revolving around the sun are not the same thing! Sheesh.

    • Thanks for the link🙂

      Amen!

“When I hear Mitt Romney say that he believes that Jesus is the Son of God–that he’s the Christ, raised from the dead, that he’s his Savior–that’s good enough for me. […] Mormonism is a little different, but I still see them as brothers in Christ.” Pastor Joel Osteen talks to CNN

      Sad…

  2. The reality is that NO Christian in a conservative fundamentalist church OR a typical evangelical church is going to give any hint that they are not going to vote for Mitt. That is because the stigma of doing so would be far too high a price to pay. Instead, they will just keep their mouths shut and go with the flow. Then, come election day, while they certainly will not vote for Barack Obama, I REALLY, REALLY, have to wonder whether they will be able to muster up the courage to deny their faith by, at the same time as they believe that the leader of our country MUST be a Christian, in spite of that, voting for Mitt Romney. I just have to believe that a lot of these people will either find a reason not to make it out to vote, or, in the privacy of the voting booth, simply leave the presidential box unvoted.

Many of these folks have boxed themselves into a corner by buying into the belief that the president “must” be a Christian…and not just any Christian but one who thinks like they do: stands for or against what they do, hates what they hate, etc. and will use his/her position as president to turn the nation “back” to its (supposed) Christin roots. Now they’re in a pickle!

Voting for Romney, a practicing mormon, makes a mockery of what they have believed. Some may not vote, but i honestly think the majority will hold their noses and vote Romney, if only because of their hatred for the current president.

Music from Broken Chords

Down in the human heart, crush'd by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. From the Hymn "Rescue the Perishing" by Fanny J. Crosby
