Quote of the Day

Its downright spooky to actually ponder upon just how many ignorant buffoons run for office in this country.  Case in point:

quote,

Women who are victims of “legitimate rape” cannot get pregnant because their bodies won’t allow it, U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, said in a television interview aired Sunday in St. Louis. In an appearance on KTVI, Akin was asked what his standard was for making abortions illegal. Akin, who is staunchly anti-abortion, said terminating a tubal pregnancy should be legal because the child cannot survive and continuing it would kill the mother. Host Charles Jaco then asked Akin whether victims of rape should be allowed to have abortions.

Akin replied. “It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down”  (Tribune)

  1. Politics will do anything, say anything, and stoop to any level to smear its opponent. But every once in a while someone says something so insane that it even escapes the usual bounds of political nonsense.
If pressed, I also am not in favor of abortion unless the mother’s life is in jeapordy. But through tears of anguish for a rape victim, we should be Jesus to them and not use that horror to impress people concerning our pro-life credentials. This man AND Paul Ryan co-sponsered a bill that would only allow government medical help in cases of “forcible” rape. The bill would exclude (for instance) a 12 year old girl who was talked into sex by a 30 year old man, or a woman who was drugged and acquiesced to sex.
This bill was meant to eliminate more Medicaid payments, which in conservative circles, is much more important than the horrible situations sinners find themselves in. But this is what politics does when we attempt to find common ground with the Word of God. A better response would have been,

“I am ripped apart inside just to think of a woman who is raped and then becomes pregnant. I cannot even pretend to understand that horror. And although I still cannot see the benefit of an additional forcible intrusion into the poor woman’s body to eliminate the child, I would hope that churches would reach out and do everything they could to help her along the way and find a suitable home for the child if that is her desire. And I believe that we who are pro-life politically would be the most ardent supporters of rape victims by word and by deed. Sadly, I believe our pro-life words have outdistanced our pro-life deeds when it comes to showing love for those with whom we disagee. I refuse to make rape victims a political football. I do not have all the answers to be sure, however I favor a Crisis Pregnancy Center much more than picketing abortion centers or even having our pictures taken as we introduce pro-life legislation.”

    • Amen, this was insane.

I’m all for people presenting political (or personal) positions and using legitimate points to back them up, but this type of nonsense is ridiculous. This guy just outright told a whopper.

  2. I see Mr. Akin has launched a new page at his website.

Its been interesting to watch his fellow republicans go after this guy, calling for him to step out of the race. Especially in light of the fact many of these same folks calling for him to get out hold basically the same views. That is, minus Akin’s idiotic reasoning.

Music from Broken Chords

Down in the human heart, crush'd by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. From the Hymn "Rescue the Perishing" by Fanny J. Crosby
