Europe threatens to withdraw support for Israel over illegal settlement plans

From reading at a number of news sources around the world today, this story appears to be escalating. France has joined with five other nations in recalling their ambassador, while some are saying this act by the Israeli government has touched off an escalating international showdown.

quote,

German, Dutch, British, and French envoys communicated their protest over Israel’s plan to construct 3,000 housing units in East Jerusalem, as well as other West Bank settlement blocs, announced after UN vote on Palestine.

Europe has been putting heavy diplomatic pressure on Israel to reverse its decision to proceed with development plans for a new neighborhood in the area between Ma’aleh Adumim and Jerusalem, known as the E1 corridor. Since Friday, five senior European ambassadors have communicated strong words of protest to the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, all bearing the same main message: the European Union’s demand that Israel reverse its decision.

British Ambassador to Israel Matthew Gould and French Ambassador to Israel Christophe Bigot called Israeli Foreign Ministry Director General Rafi Barak and other senior officials at the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday, a senior European diplomat said a short while after Israel announced it was going to accelerate the construction plans on the E1 corridor as a response to Palestinian push for UN recognition.

On Sunday morning, the Netherlands’ Ambassador to Israel, Caspar Veldkamp, European Union Ambassador Andrew Standley, and the German deputy ambassador all called the Prime Minister’s office.

The British, French, and Dutch letters of protest were very strongly worded. Both the French and British ambassadors stressed their call to Israel to go back on its plans to erect 3,000 housing units and not proceed any further with any plans for the E1 corridor. “London is furious with the decision over the E1 corridor,” a British diplomat told Haaretz.

The Dutch ambassador, whose country abstained from last week’s vote by the United Nations’ General Assembly to give Palestine observer status, warned that if Israel moves forward with its construction plans in the E1 corridor, his country will be unable to help Israel and to support its policies in future votes at the UN and other international organizations. The deputy German ambassador had a similar message. A German diplomat said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is likely to hear serious objections to the plan from Chancellor Angela Merkel when he visits Berlin on Thursday.

Despite the protests from Europe, a source in the Prime Minister’s Office said that Israel is planning to take more steps against the Palestinian Authority.

“The Palestinians will soon come to understand that they made a mistake when they took unilateral action and breached their treaties with Israel,” the source at the PMO said.

  1. Israel wants peace on their terms, and the palestinians want peace on theirs. Scripture already gives a general head up that peace will never be achieved in the end times. But the mistake that so many evangelicals make is that they watch world events and take political sides while taking their eyes off Christ. Jews and Arabs do not need an earthly peace plan; they need Jesus.

    • I’ve been reading a small booklet before bed this week which shows how Arabs (including Palestinians) and Jews are related to each other through Abraham. Its really fascinating to see, on a graph, how both groups can be tracked back to Ishmael and Isaac.

  2. Yes the truth is children are inculcated by their familiar histories. When you calculate this into the equation one can see just how selfish family can be: Gen. 25:1 Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.
2 She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
3 Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.
4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.
5 Abraham gave all he had to Isaac.
6 But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, and while he was still living he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country.
7 These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, 175 years.
8 Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.
9 Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre,
10 the field that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife.

One question I have not pursued is this: “why didn’t Keturah’s children get involved in the burial of Abraham”. Where were they on the day of his death”?

What I believe is the reason for such silence on these and other matters that are shrouded in mystery in the Scriptures is the Gospel. The Holy Spirit has been tasked with being there for us to lead us into all truth. Sometimes “truth” is accepting that there are some things in life we are not meant to know and this “truth” then becomes the greatest of defenses against doubts, “His Faith”!

6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

God told Abram this when as yet he had no child because of the beareness of Sarai: Gen. 13:14 The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,
15 for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.
16 I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted.

Salvation indeed came from the loins of Abraham as did children that could not be numbered for the multitude of them!

Today the only peace anyone will know is the peace He gives and it will be a peace unlike the peace the world gives!

I ask you? Has God kept His promise to Abraham as promised him there at Genesis 13? It does seem to me He has!

And has the Prince of Peace come and died and was then buried and rose up again defeating death and the devil and the ways of men so that this Gospel of the Kingdom can be given to all God has given His Faith too even to the end?

So be it then that the Church preach and teach Truth all the while prepares herself spotless and blameless and ready holy ready for Him!

Amen Michael, there are a number of mysteries we may never be given light on…and that’s where faith comes in.

One question I have not pursued is this: “why didn’t Keturah’s children get involved in the burial of Abraham”. Where were they on the day of his death”?

I became curious after reading that and went searching. Though this can’t tell us why it does give a little information on the meaning of her name (Keturah) and how one of her sons, Midian, fathered the Midianites.

We’re told that Keturah gave Abraham several children, of which 6 are mentioned. We have no idea who Keturah is, or who her ancestors were…

However, it is clear that the etymology of Keturah’s name is the Hebrew word ketoret, which means spices. And, in fact, certain tribes that have long been suspected as being descendants of Abraham and Keturah were associated with the spice trade in ancient times. It is also helpful for us to know that the prime spice-producing region for the Middle East at that time, and for many centuries to come, was an area of southern Arabia today known as Yemen.

We will run into several of these named children of Keturah later on in Scripture, and yet others will never be heard of again; so let me point out one son in particular because the territory he settled would play a large role in Moses’ life: that son is named Midian. And, true to his mother’s name, the Midianites were known as spice-traders, particularly of the highly valued frankincense. Their territory was located on the Arabian Peninsula, bordered by the eastern edge of finger of the Red Sea today called the Gulf of Aqaba. These are the same Midianites and the same region where Moses fled from Egypt, where God came to Moses in a burning bush, and where Moses found a wife.

These 6 sons of Keturah, along with the son of Hagar the Egyptian girl, Ishmael, would go on to form what we can loosely call the Arab peoples….people who populated the Middle East and Northern Africa.

The history pertaining to the decedents of Abraham is very interesting, isn’t it. It helps explain the hostility we see among the people(s) of the middle east today.

Music from Broken Chords

Down in the human heart, crush'd by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. From the Hymn "Rescue the Perishing" by Fanny J. Crosby
