Dobson on Obama’s Reelection: ‘Nearly Everything I Have Stood for these Past 35 Years Went Down to Defeat’

James Dobson in his January newsletter for his Family Talk radio program reflected on President Obama’s re-election and the Democrats’ gains in Congress by lamenting that “moral and spiritual issues” took “a beating on November 6th.”

“Nearly everything I have stood for these past 35 years went down to defeat,” Dobson said, arguing that the Democratic Party’s platform “represents a kind of spiritual warfare that has not been seen before in American politics.”

The Focus on the Family founder went on to state that “Barack Obama is the worst president in American history” and claimed Obama holds “dictatorial powers.” He also called judges “the most dangerous” threat to America and warned that “the family and the nation will never be the same” if gay marriage becomes legal across the country.

In his post-election Family Talk broadcast, Dobson said that Obama’s re-election was God rejecting the prayers of his wife’s National Day of Prayer Task Force and will bring about divine judgment on America.

It’s really kind of sad. James Dobson (and others who have been bemoaning the Nov. election) would never consider that God’s will WAS done. Nope…they prayed one way and the results were contrary to how they prayed so “wallah!” in their minds, their prayers were not answered according to THEIR WILL so divine judgment is at the door.

I’ll never understand these folks…

  1. How can a Mormon be any better than a Muslim? He’s a MORMON, people!! What part of this is hard for people to grasp? Dobson’s 35 years of morals and ethics were wrapped up in a Mormon getting elected?! My gracious, this IS sad.

  2. Your perspective is very confusing. James Dobson is simply heartbroken about the moral collapse of our nation. That is wrong in your viewpoint? Do you not feel we as the church should be grieving and in deep, desperate intercession for a leader who needs God so clearly?

    • What is wrong is when we believe we “absolutely know” what God’s will is, as it pertains to national elections.

    • You just came off negatively against a brother in the Lord. Brother Dobson is simply standing for God’s principles. If God wanted President Obama in office, it’s not so he could establish his agenda, it’s to provoke the church to repentance ahead of possible judgment.

    • And you are looking for an argument. Sorry, but you won’t get one started here.

      God bless…

    • Nope, not looking for an argument. Just defending a man of God from an embarrassing and shameful comment. James Dobson deserves honor, not attack.

    • The only embarrassing, shameful comment was made by Dobson.

Do you really understand what this is saying,

In his post-election Family Talk broadcast, Dobson said that Obama’s re-election was God rejecting the prayers of his wife’s National Day of Prayer Task Force and will bring about divine judgment on America

He is assuming, A-S-S-U-M-I-N-G, the reason why God did not answer his wife’s prayer (and those of her task force) is because God is about to send His divine judgment upon America. Really? Who told Dobson this, God?

These are the words of someone who thinks too highly of themselves. Who wrongly believes “their” prayers are more important then the next Christians. I wonder how many American Christians quietly entered their prayer-closet and prayed that Romney not be elected? I don’t know, do you? Were their prayers just as important to God?

My point is, im sure there were Christians who did prayer in this manner.

And im just as sure there were more Christians who prayed, “not my will but thy will be done Father”.

James Dobson destroyed any respect i may have had for him years ago, when he became nothing but a political activist: so consequently, will receive no honor here.

    • Do you not believe Christians should have a voice regarding politics? Should we not boldly declare the word of the Lord? Why would you lose respect for someone who is trying to impact the political landscape for God, who is standing for righteousness? That’s what has me baffled.

I certainly believe judgment is coming… it couldn’t be clearer, unfortunately.

    • I wasn’t aware God desired us to spend all our time and energy on “impacting the political landscape” John. Perhaps you can point to a verse or two in which the new testament church did that?

    • I wonder…was Jesus a Republican or Democrat? I think He was more of a Pilgrim.
Does a pilgrim run for gov’t if he’s just passing through? Does he try to impact the political landscape or does he accomplish his goals and move on through? We are to emulate Christ, preach the Gospel, and pass on through to heaven. Period.

    • Amen amen!

  3. God is still ruling this world and his will is still being carried out, regardless of how we think an election should have gone. God is the ultimate cause behind all causes. Nothing takes him by surprise, but instead he is guiding all things by his providential rule over all events.

    • Amen. Exactly!

    • I think the sadness lies in the fact that a so called Christian brother was hoping and depending on Romney getting in to help turn the tide. What now? I guess we have to wait until another demi god runs for office? Romney is not a Christian and the Christian world should not in any way shape or form hang their hopes and prayers for revival on him or anyone else for that matter. God can use stones and donkeys to get His plans fulfilled.
God is sovereign. Dobson needs to remember this.

    • I guess we have to wait until another demi god runs for office?

To hear these guys talk, yes. They’ll wait until the next election season rolls around and pick someone else to deify. Their goal in life seems to be constantly working toward electing a man to serve as both president and national spiritual leader. This time their desperation really showed in that they were more then willing to help elect a mormon.

Where does this thinking come from? Because i just don’t get it at all. Maybe this stuff has always been around but i sure don’t recall it prior to the late 70’s-early 80’s. Perhaps seeking to elect a spiritual leader has been caused by the absence of true spiritual Church leadership today.

  4. Romans 13:1-2
“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God.

  5. How is it that people like Dobson have set up morals rather than Christ? This is not the gospel, it is moral hubris and it sets up people as Pharisees. Instead of being broken over people’s souls, he laments about his 35 years of standing for something. Can’t we see the self righteousness in all of this? What redemption is in this self pity straw man?

    • You’re right Rick, and no its not the gospel.

If he’d spent the last 35 years more concerned with the Gospel and taking it to the lost, he’d have no reason now to feel defeated to the point of throwing himself a pity-party.

  6. As one commenting firsthand about the Dobson’s, having met Shirley personally in my office in Wash.D.C. and attended a Senatorial briefing with Dobson himself at the Hart Building during the National Day of Prayer I too lost a lot of respect for James because of the trajectory I saw he was on. I stand with you on this PJ.

He has lost his way. Not to worry “if” James & Shirley Dobson are called to “The Father’s Eternal Glory in Christ” (1 Peter 5:10-11) because the Good Shepherd loses no one the Father has given to Him! “If” he is just another snake in the grass, well, we already know where they dwell : Gen. 1:14 The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring[fn] and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

    • Michael, thank you. And i do sincerely hope and pray all these folks who have forsaken the ‘real’ work we’ve been commissioned to carry out, wake up one day to the truth that (as in the case of the Dobson’s) DECADES have been lost to them while they wasted all their time and energy in the attempt to bring about change, which only the anointed gospel was able to truly bring about.

  7. Received this from Chip Brogden today and immediately thought of this post.

    My Way, God’s Way

“Not My will, but Yours, be done.”

    LUKE 22:42

What does it cost to become a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ? What does one have to give up? There is truly only one thing that must be given up. It is not, and it never has been, a question of giving up friends, family, material possessions, fame and fortune. You can give up all those things, just like the first disciples of the Lord, and still run away and deny Him.

Forget the outward things and go right to the heart of the matter. Only one thing is necessary, and if we give up this one thing we are qualified to be disciples of the Lord. What is the one thing? All we have to give up is OUR WAY.

There are two ways, one which seems right, and one which IS right. One is my way, the other is His way.
