American Evangelicalism and the Hebrew Roots Movement

Barth Notes has an interesting article up concerning the Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast and Pastor Wiley Drake. You may recall Drake being in the news some time back for his

“infamous devotion to “imprecatory prayers” against his political opponents, and his admission that he regularly prays for President Obama’s death”

But what caught my attention were two other names mentioned as attending the prayer breakfast: Sid Roth and Jonathan Cahn.

Other speakers included Sid Roth and State Senator Stewart Greenleaf, who both reportedly spoke against “dividing up the land of Israel”, but the highlight was keynote speaker Jonathan Cahn, whose unusual form of Christianity (he claims special knowledge of “Hebrew mysteries”) has become popular since he published a paperback explaining how the USA is under God’s judgement and headed for disaster.

Why? because as Richard Bartholomew correctly points out,

….there’s a growing trend in American evangelicalism to express the “Hebrew Roots” of their religion

  1. PJ,

Did you happen to listen to Cahn’s prayer that sounded more like a gotcha moment to me and very Nationalistic and patriotic?

At a couple postings where the blog gives the link to his fiery prayer talk I made the comment that nationalism is a powerful voice but an even more powerful voice is this internationalism that King David had sung at the inaugural of the tabernacle prior to the construction of the majestic Temple: 1 Chronicle 16:31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let them say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!”
32 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it!
33 Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth.

Notice his internationalism and there a case to be made for Jesus’ point made here: Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

    • No i didn’t listen to it Michael…maybe i should?

Do you know anything about this man Cahn? I ask because i don’t believe i’ve read or heard much (if anything) about him outside of what’s posted and linked to at Barth Notes. If you have any info i’d sure appreciate it.

  2. Oh the insanity. Praying for the death of your enemies? Does anyone even read the New Testament anymore?

  3. PJ,

first I’ve changed email from my old account with the acronym natamllc to this gmail account.

No I never heard of this Jewish Rabbi before the other day when a pastor friend sent me a link to his prayer talk the other day. I use to go to the National prayer events years ago and would spend time with my friend who knew my involvement in those events during Bush 41 day at the White House. He knows my desire to elevate our priesthood and the daily prayers we should all be engaged in for one another, our families, churches, government officials and and and so I suppose that’s why he sent the link?

Interesting though the same he sent the link I opened a blog I frequent (Ponderings of a Pilgrim Pastor and he posted an analysis of Cagn’s book The Harbinger.

I have done a little research on timelines and time tables that line up and explain Daniel’s 70 weeks prophecy so when I listened to this Rabbi pray and heard some similarities I paid more attention.

Don’t know much more than that except some of his points make sense while things like Rick posted cause alarm bells to go off in my head too!

    • OK. I was hoping you might have some more information about him. Guess i need to run a search and check him and his book(s) out.

Hey Michael, if you don’t mind sharing it here, i’d like the link to the blog you mentioned. If you visit it im sure i’d also like it!🙂

    • Thank you Michael!🙂

Over the years i’ve gotten more picky about what blogs and Christian websites i read at so am always happy when a good reliable one can be found. I added this one to my bookmarks and subscribed to the daily feeds.

  4. Jonathan Cahn is not a rabbi. He a Christian pastor and author of The Harbinger. The basic premise of his book and of his speech at the inaugural breakfast is that America is Gods covenant nation the same as Israel was. He appeals directly to nationalist patriotism.

The video of his speech has gone viral. It’s very easy to get approval from evangelicals by talking about America’s need to repent. It focuses Gods people on “all those sinners out there” Unfortunately if judgement is come to America it’s not because of all those sinners out there. It will be because of all the sinners among Gods people. It is we who need to repent and turn from our wicked ways and our nationalistic idols

    • Thanks for the info Steve.

      Couldn’t agree more brother Steve.

“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?”

      I read this recently:

A blind unrepentant Church consigns us to our fate due to its failure to live what it preaches to others

Music from Broken Chords

Down in the human heart, crush'd by the tempter, Feelings lie buried that grace can restore; Touched by a loving heart, wakened by kindness Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. From the Hymn "Rescue the Perishing" by Fanny J. Crosby
