Rob Bell: God Pulling Us Ahead to Affirm Gay Brothers, Sisters…

“I believe God [is] pulling us ahead into greater and greater affirmation and acceptance of our gay brothers and sisters and pastors and friends and neighbors and coworkers,” former megachurch pastor and best-selling author Rob Bell explained just days after surprising the evangelical Christian community with his expressed support for same-sex marriage.

The former Mars Hill Bible Church founder and controversial Love Wins author told Odyssey Networks in an interview published Wednesday that many people are “realizing that God makes some of us one way and some of us another, and it can be a beautiful thing.”

The video interview, titled “Why Rob Bell Supports Gay Marriage,” comes just days after the Michigan church founder visited San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral (the Episcopal Cathedral of the Diocese of California) in a promotional book tour to discuss his purpose for writing What We Talk About When We Talk About God, his views on evangelical Christianity and future projects he has lined up.

During that event, Bell was asked about his stance on same-sex marriage and he explained that he was “for marriage.”

“I am for fidelity. I am for love, whether it’s a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, a man and a man. I think the ship has sailed and I think that the church needs to just … this is the world that we are living in and we need to affirm people wherever they are,” he responded.

I have some thoughts about this, but just returned from the doctor’s office and am pretty tired, so will wait to add them. In the meantime I would very much like to hear any thoughts you may have.

There is a very serious spiritual battle going on in our churches and within many Christians today folks, concerning the entire “gay” situation. Do you recognize it?

  1. I had the opportunity whilst driving interstate, to listen to a 5 hour talk by Dr James White “Gay Christianity Refuted”. Matthew Vine, a gay christian(?) is talking to a church presenting his argument for biblical support of gay monogamous (loving) relationships. Dr White takes his argument apart using correct scriptural exergesis. Matthew is either seriously deluded or a deliberate tool of satan. It is easy to see how those who don’t hold only to the word of God will be swayed into believing the lie, after all god made them this way and by twisting scripture they don’t need to repent just re invent Gods word to permit their choices.

  2. The gay agenda is working like magic on the church-goers. The true Christians shall remain faithful to Christ.

  3. It’s ugly. On the one hand, I think Rob Bell is completely wrong to think same-sex relationships constitute marriage in the Christian sense. However this position is too easy. The other side is the absolute abhorrent condemnation of Homosexuality. That is to say: mistreating, demeaning and outright shunning those who struggle with lust for the same sex.

Same-sex attraction is probably a mix of nature and nurture. However, where in Scripture is Nature appealed to as a window into God? God’s Presence is Jesus Christ. Our eyes are blinded and ears shut and Nature is in bondage due to the advent of sin by Adam.

To embrace a womanizer, to embrace me, is acceptable and to give me my Lord’s body and blood is good. Yet too many slam the door on the face of those who struggle with their inclinations. They’re told to shut up and get fixed.

Even so, there are those who seek to follow Jesus and are not aware of all of their idolatries. One many proclaim Him as Lord and still not understand that one shouldn’t have sex out of marriage. This is where discipleship comes in, where brothers and sisters walk alongside each other, guided and carried by the Spirit. Yet this is non-existent. A big fat “WRONG!” is slammed on the face of someone who has genuine seeking on whether one can follow Jesus and be in a “gay” relationship.

Preach Christ and not moralisms and perhaps the Church will start to look like it ought to be. That is: a big, messed up, family/hospital where the Master is breathing life.

Rob Bell is the pendulum swing to the utter failure of the Church in America. It has allowed Moralism to triumph and the heresy of Civil Religion to flourish. There are many congregations that do not belong to Christ in the USA, they’ve lost their candlesticks. They now preach Western morality and it stinks of death.

  4. The last time I read my bible concerning this topic , it said the same things that the inspired authors wrote way back when [homosexuality is an abomination]. Is Bell reading his bible , or is he reimagining things until they become reality in his corrupted mind. What gives? , either God has changed his mind and we now affirm our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters , or is Bell just a fanciful liar. My money is on option 2 .
If Bell wants to be an apologist for gays and lesbians , fine , thats his bussiness , but please do not do so under the banner of christianity. Bell , through his contempt of Gods written word , has amply demonstrated that he is not a christian . End of story and my two cents worth.!!

  5. It is quite telling that Bell founded Mars Hill church because Mars Hill (aka the Areopogus) was the place in Athens where philosophers came to hear or tell something new. For those with ears to hear the name expresses perfectly the confusion found in that place.

For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing Acts 17:21

  6. Rob Bell preaches another gospel. And that has nothing to do with the gay issue.

  7. “I think the ship has sailed and I think that the church needs to just … this is the world that we are living in and we need to affirm people wherever they are,” he responded.”

I think this reflects the carnal thinking of so many Christians. Its NOT about Christ. Rather its about the political battle. All this time and energy is wasted on a battle against gays and abortion on a POLITICAL level. And now, on the gay issue at least, the result is clear. The other side is not just winning. They have won. So do Christians then flee to Christ? Or do they think like a politician and just adjust their theology accordingly. The problem is that their theology has been wrong from the beginning. When a Christian tries to battle the flesh with the flesh, the only winner is the devil. Now the devil has won. So now the carnal Christian will somehow need to accommodate the thing they previously hated and somehow try to make it sound like a spiritually inspired move.

Unsaved people live in sin. It is the way they are wired. Some practice the sorts of sin that are “respectable”. They really don’t bother a lot of Christians at all. Their sin is “forgivable”. Other practice not so respectable sins. They get the fire and brimstone treatment. But now it appears that homosexual behavior is gaining a cloak of respectability. Perhaps they, like many other sorts of sinners will now be welcome in the church and we will all simply turn a blind eye to their “failings”. How sad. Perhaps now the preacher will be editing his sermons to make sure he doesn’t offend yet another special interest group in his congregation. This is only leading us deeper into the pit.

If only we could love the people and hate their sin. If only we could make all people welcome in our churches and expose them to sermons that, without pointing a finger at anyone, expose their sin (whatever that sin may be, no matter how serious or trivial it might appear in our eyes), and give them the opportunity for forgiveness, redemption and repentance. If only we could learn to deal with people’s sins in the Spirit instead of in the flesh by means of political activism.

  8. Thanks for all your comments…

Both Cal and George in particular, touched upon some of my own thoughts.

    Cal wrote,

Taking for granted the truth that practicing homosexuality is sin, Cal is correct in his assessment of how the politically minded church in America has responded to those who practice this sin.

    As George pointed out,

All this time and energy is wasted on a battle against gays and abortion on a POLITICAL level. And now, on the gay issue at least, the result is clear. The other side is not just winning. They have won.

Future books on Church History in America will show fighting against homosexuality, and more so, politically battling homosexuals, by any means available, will be shown to be what this entire American evangelical church era has been about.

NOT about our being living epistles among those in need of Christ.

And for all intents and purposes, the end result is as George wrote,

The other side is not just winning. They have won.

This, in my opinion is what happens when we allow fanatic extremists (and i don’t care what they call themselves…Christians or “whatever”) to speak for the church: you’re eventually going to get groups, even Christians, rising up & pushing back by going to the other extreme. In this instance, becoming more acceptive of homosexuality.

I listened to an author talking about his book on the American spirit….what makes us “who we are today”…etc etc. Normally i would have cared less about this so-called American profile, but he did make one interesting point: that being, it’s human nature (and especially so in America, according to this author) to root for “little guy”…or the one “taking the beating”. And i agree! Heck, i’ve caught myself suddenly rooting for the one obviously losing badly, in a race.🙂

After that somewhat silly example, this is my point. Satan knows our nature. And he’s had plenty of time to learn how to manipulate that nature. Right?

    So a question,

Do you really believe it’s been God who has raised up Christians to battle this sin politically? Has He “moved” upon these same Christians to personally attack or speak hate about (and to) those practicing this sin?

I don’t. And i base my belief on the truth that it’s His will all come to Christ and be saved, and this we see today, is not evangelizing and will win no one to Christ.

How easy it has been for our enemy. Can you see it?

  9. I don’t for second, no, a millisecond think God has raised up anyone to war His warfare any other way other than the way He wants it waged. He’s not interested in changing the battle plans for winning this spiritual war in our modern high tech times.

George hit the bull’s eye as far as I can tell.

    Rick too.

Rob Bell is cursed because he’s preaching another Gospel! I don’t think saying that is anything more than being charitable and merciful to him and more so to those who have fallen prey to his gospel because of him!

The apostle Paul demonstrated what he preached. In 1st Corinthians 4:20 he said the Kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power!

In Romans he gives about the most comprehensive explanation of just how walking in and preaching the Gospel in the power of God works in bringing true repentance in any and all sinners of whatever color, spot or stripe:

I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God. For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience—by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God—so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; (Romans 15:14-19 ESV)

You can bet your bottom dollar many adulterers, homosexuals, thieves, idolaters and liars were among his converts! All of them saved and sanctified by the same Holy Spirit we are and all of them happily enjoying paradise right now as we prepare for battle the battles we will face in our lifetime.

God is still on His throne. And Christ must reign until all His, yours and my enemies are destroyed including all rule, authority and power, death being the final foe!
