Dr. Walter Martin investigates the Pre -Tribulation Rapture

Thought I had heard all of the late Dr. Martin’s audio messages but after coming upon these this evening I realized there are a few I’ve missed. For most Christians he needs no introduction, but if you happen to be a young believer there’s a chance you may have never heard of Dr. Martin. You can find a bio about this influential bible teacher and leader in Christian apologetics here.

This is an interesting 6-part series, if you ultimately agree with his position or not, concerning the rapture and what the early Church believed and taught on the timing of this subject for 1900 years.

  1. Thank you PJ for this post. I have been riding the fence concerning this subject. It seems that there is so much on this subject from one viewpoint or the other…Dr Martin has shed some very important light on this confusion and I thank you.

    • Glad you liked the series and it helped. I know what you mean about the fence: been there myself. aha!

I always loved Dr Martin’s teachings and he didn’t fail in this one either in giving me much to think about. I’d already planned to post the series, after coming across it, before listening to all 6 segments. But after listening to all of them, he actually confirmed something i have come to believe: that being, the Church is going to be here until Jesus returns. It was actually the very scripture(s) he pointed out in 2 Thess which convinced me.

      Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

  2. Joshua 21:43 says, So theLord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there. The Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers. Not one of their enemies withstood them; The Lord handed all their enemies over to them. Not one of the Lord’s good promises to the house of Israel failed;: every one was filled.

    • Thanks for adding the scripture Kathy! Ever notice how so many ignore the truth that the promise was fulfilled?

    • Kathy, I’m also glad to see that you added Joshua 21:43 here. (This could be added as well to Stephen Sizer’s study posted here recently.) The following passages further affirm that God kept His promises made to Abraham regarding the land:

“Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth. And you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spoke concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one word of them has failed. Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all the good things have come upon you which the Lord your God promised you, so the Lord will bring upon you all harmful things, until He has destroyed you from this good land which the Lord your God has given you” (Joshua 23:14-15).

“You are the Lord God, Who chose Abram, and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans, and gave him the name Abraham; You found his heart faithful before You,
And made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, and the Girgashites—to give it to his descendants. You have performed Your words, for You are righteous” (Nehemiah 9:7-8).

      See also Jeremiah 11:2-5.

  3. I’m certainly not pre or mid tribulation in thinking and I’m not sure his position stated very convincingly is what hold either?

How can we have The Lord take up the throne of David building it according to some pattern and have inagurated a Priesthood where you animal sacrifices as the Levitical priesthood? Are we to suppose three festivals a year, one begins with the pascal lamb sacrifice? Huh? Now that makes no logical sense!

How does The Lord atone for these converts once the Temple is completed and anointed and the blood begins to flow?

As I’ve noted before I believe we see God gave an architectural plan to Moses so God could dwell with the Children of Israel during their wanderings and period of conquest culminating with King Solomon building the permanent Temple according to the architectural plan shown King David. We all agree the second structure was completely destroyed in 70 A.D.. Now we are near 2000 years later and we see the world and her cities and politics are very contrary and anti everything Christ even present day Israel!

Dr. Martin’s series raises more doubt than affirmation for me.

What did he affirm for you PJ? Are you now settled into a post tribulation rapture where after the first resurrection you too return to rule and reign with Christ a thousand years?

    • What did he affirm for you PJ?

      Like many Christians Michael i believed in the any-day (imminent) rapture timing for years. It was what i was taught early-on in Church. It wasn’t until shortly before starting this blog that i began to question this, and this was based primarily upon Paul’s words in 2 Thess. 2;

1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

      3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

It read simply to me, first (before our Lord’s return) would come a falling away….THEN, the man of sin would be revealed…and only then would our Lord return and (as 1Thess 4) tells us,

13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

I didn’t need to have Dr Martin actually affirm this for me, for this has been what i have believed for some years now. But it was nice to hear him point out the same verses which affirmed this for me.

As far as the millennium…im still working on understanding this. I still have many questions about it and especially question what some of the most common beliefs are that we read today.

The rebuilt temple is a ‘quagmire’ in my thinking: For while i cannot positively state one will NOT be erected, (for man is capable of almost anything), i can say unequivocally if it is, it will be an abomination on the highest scale. Just read recently where Hal Lindsey wrote about how ‘wonderful!” it will be and will end up being the greatest tourist attraction in the world.

That statement itself is an abomination–it is heretical. As is the fact that Christians (blood-bought believers in Christ) have been helping to finance the rebuilding of this abomination in which blood sacrifices would be instituted. Pre-trib Christians talk and write about a future anti-christ ‘sitting in this temple, referring to himself as god’ being ‘the’ abomination which makes desolate. I say, horse-feathers! The building of it itself would be the abomination….as would what would occur within it. And for Christians to participate in any way, shape, or form (making pilgrimage, etc) would be trampling under-foot the blood of Christ.

How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? Heb. 10:29</blockquote

  4. The more I ponder the totality of the Scripture and see things pending that are in the “moderation que”, so to speak, waiting to be released from there to be made visible, I begin to form the following rough draft opinion of end time coming events in Israel and the world.

You quoted this verse from 2 Thessalonians 2: “…8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: …”.

Today for the first time these Scriptures came to mind to quote as a forerunner example of that and if memory serves me correctly history before and since has also recorded as bad or worse afflictions that seem Biblical in nature have happened to men that their suffering was attributed to the wrathful Hand of God:

Acts 12:20 Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food.
21 On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them.
22 And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!”
23 Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

Here it seems to me Herod is a foreshadowing of that one coming quoting the Apostle Paul?

For instance I know the sister of a man who suffered such a horrific death that they believed it too was the Hand of God. These verses from Psalm 50 describes what the Coroner found and put on the Coroner’s report:

Psalm 50:16 But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips?
17 For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.
18 If you see a thief, you are pleased with him, and you keep company with adulterers.
19 “You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit.
20 You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother’s son.
21 These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.
22 “Mark this, then, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver!

LEST I TEAR YOU APART AND THERE BE NONE TO DELIVER!

I can see a scenario unfold that goes something like this coming to Israel “because” the majority of Jews today disregard the New Testament testimony that their Savior has come. They believe He coming and look for Him. This then explains why it isn’t Jesus (who came and suffered and died and rose again) but I can imagine (that antichrist Jesus, Paul, John and others wrote about) a charismatic orthodox Jewish Rabbi coming along performing the Satanic power of false signs and wonders fooling Jews in Israel and around the world into believing he is their Christ that they believe is coming and believed in the Old Testament. He then calls for the rebuilding of the temple all the while a Jewish prophet who side by side with him anoints him to be their king/prince/savior who then goes into that temple, (sorry Arabs, your Mosque is no more), and The True Risen Lord strikes him down in full view just like we read happened to Herod in Acts 12?

What I don’t see is a 1000 year reign of Our True Lord and Savior coming to His rebuilt Temple on earth in present day Jerusalem as is in Heaven where He sits on His Throne right now reigning until He destroys all rule, authority and power on earth not His Own:

1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.
24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power.
25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

I believe we are easily fooled. How much more when these sorts of things come about from one man repeatedly?:

2 Thessalonians 2:9 The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,
10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
11 Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false,
12 in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

All the while Christians around the world are fixated on Our Risen Lord because we indeed are citizens of His Kingdom eager to a pass to Glory or He returns:

Hebrews 9:27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

    Even so, Lord Jesus, come!

    • I can see a scenario unfold that goes something like this coming to Israel “because” the majority of Jews today disregard the New Testament testimony that their Savior has come. Could be Michael. The only reason that i could see which could hinder this i the fact that Israel’s population today is made up of such a large secular group of people…one’s who have no religious ties at all and don’t want any. I was quite surprised to realize this over the last few years, that so many Jews living in Israel have no interest whatsoever in the religion of their forefathers. From what i read, Israel is more liberal (as a whole) then the US.

But as we’re always pointing out–anything is possible.

What I don’t see is a 1000 year reign of Our True Lord and Savior coming to His rebuilt Temple on earth in present day Jerusalem as is in Heaven where He sits on His Throne right now reigning until He destroys all rule, authority and power on earth not His Own

No, i don’t either, though many teach this today. I believe the word is clear that God will never (again) reside in a temple made by man.

Acts 7:48,49 – Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

      Acts 17:24,25 – God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

      What we will see is,

Revelation 21:1-5 – Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

Revelation 22:1-5 – Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

All this other ‘business’ which is taught about how Israel (Jews) will reign on earth while the Church resides in Heaven, is nonsense.

  5. When one is spiritually born again, one does not need to “investigate” bible truths. The Holy Spirit bears witness to our spirit whether something is of God or not. For a bible scholar of Martin’s caliber, it’s sad that he erroneously held to a post trib belief.

    • Then i guess you think God made a mistake in appointing some teachers? That’s silly my friend, for we are to study and learn from God’s Word! And yes, God does call some to be teachers–guides, if you will.

Don’t know about you but i hope to be learning more and more, every day, from God’s Word on up until i leave this world: we should all be “investigating” and learning by studying the Word.

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2Tim2:15

As far as it being ‘sad’ that Dr. Martin held to a post-trib belief, he’s in good company. Many renown, past and present bible scholars held/hold to the same belief. Not all Christians are pretribbers.
