Netanyahu Continues Prep for War at Cost of $2.9 Billion

War appears to have been Netanyahu’s objective from the get-go.

From Haaretz

Despite talks between Iran and West, senior officers tell MKs 10b shekels ($2.9b) allocated to IDF to prepare for possible attack.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon have ordered the army to continue preparing for a possible military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities at a cost of at least 10 billion shekels ($2.89 billion) this year, despite the talks between Iran and the West, according to recent statements by senior military officers.

Three Knesset members who were present at Knesset joint committee hearings on Israel Defense Forces plans that were held in January and February say they learned during the hearings that 10 billion shekels to 12 billion shekels of the defense budget would be allocated this year for preparations for a strike on Iran, approximately the same amount that was allocated in 2013.

Some MKs asked the army’s deputy chief of staff, Maj. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot, and planning directorate official Brig. Gen. Agai Yehezkel whether they felt there was justification for investing so much money in those preparations, said the MKs present at the meetings, who asked that their names be withheld because of the sensitivity of the issue. They said some lawmakers also asked whether the interim agreement reached between Iran and the six powers in November 2013, and the ongoing negotiations for a full nuclear accord, had caused any change in the IDF’s preparations.

The IDF representatives said the army had received a clear directive from government officials from the political echelon – meaning Netanyahu and Ya’alon – to continue readying for a possible independent strike by Israel on the Iranian nuclear sites, regardless of the talks now happening between Iran and the West, the three MKs said.

Ever since the interim accord between Iran and the six powers was reached, Netanyahu has stressed that Israel will not consider itself bound by it. In the last few weeks, as talks on a permanent accord have resumed, Netanyahu has upped his rhetoric on the Iranian issue, and is again making implied threats about a possible unilateral Israeli strike on the Iranian nuclear sites.

Ya’alon recently indicated during a speech at Tel Aviv University that his view has shifed and he is now likely to support a unilateral Israeli strike on Iran, in light of his assessment that the Obama administration will not do so;

“We think that the United States should be the one leading the campaign against Iran,” Ya’alon said this week. “But the U.S. has entered talks with them and unfortunately, in the haggling in the Persian bazaar, the Iranians were better… Therefore, on this matter, we have to behave as though we have nobody to look out for us but ourselves.”

  1. PJ, there are some things we can learn about these days when weighing what the “tea leafs” are revealing about the hostilities brewing in the Middle East and around the world.

You are familiar with the inter testimonial period between the first and second testaments, aren’t you? Daniel 11 is where this period is most pronounced and written about clearly. Using Daniel as a back drop I’d like to proffer what seems to be unfolding before our eyes in these days in the Middle East and Israel.

    We read from Luke’s Gospel:

Luke 1: 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Luke 2: 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

The question to be asked then answered is “Who pleases God that their ways are the Way of His Peace”?

We have these verses to inform us who pleases God and enjoys His Peace no matter what is happening in the world:

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

1 Timothy 2:1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,
2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,
4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

Hopefully you realize this “peace” is experienced all over the world and among all the people of God called to live a life of Faith before Christ?

What we see developing in Israel is this:

Daniel 11:37 He shall pay no attention to the gods of his fathers, or to the one beloved by women. He shall not pay attention to any other god, for he shall magnify himself above all.
38 He shall honor the god of fortresses instead of these. A god whom his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts.
39 He shall deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. Those who acknowledge him he shall load with honor. He shall make them rulers over many and shall divide the land for a price.

Notice the vision now will be focused on another time. Now Daniel is seeing events unfolding at the “time of the end”:::>

Daniel 11:40 “At the time of the end, the king of the south shall attack him, but the king of the north shall rush upon him like a whirlwind, with chariots and horsemen, and with many ships. And he shall come into countries and shall overflow and pass through.
41 He shall come into the glorious land. And tens of thousands shall fall, but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the main part of the Ammonites.
42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
43 He shall become ruler of the treasures of gold and of silver, and all the precious things of Egypt, and the Libyans and the Cushites shall follow in his train.
44 But news from the east and the north shall alarm him, and he shall go out with great fury to destroy and devote many to destruction.
45 And he shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the glorious holy mountain. Yet he shall come to his end, with none to help him.

Now we see a kind of conflict that is without borders for some, a group of nations who are holding to their national identity ( but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the main part of the Ammonites.), and there is now this “spiritual” entity (“40…And he shall come into countries and shall overflow and pass through., 42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, 45 And he shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the glorious holy mountain. Yet he shall come to his end, with none to help him.).

What we have here is what the Apostle Paul wrote about when he wrote these things:

2 Corinthians 4:13 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak,
14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.
15 For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,
18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

That is similar to what was written to the Hebrews about Moses here:

Hebrews 11:27 By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.

We see glimpses of the unseen and the invisible realities of both God, Angels and the Devil with the demons working in the world and among us in the ordinary course of our day!

My guess is the current “peace” talks between the Palestinians and the Jewish state will deteriorate so there will be no agreement; and, the current negotiations for nuclear disarming of components that if not agreed to by Iran will cause the military of Israel (Daniel 11:39 He shall deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. Those who acknowledge him he shall load with honor. He shall make them rulers over many and shall divide the land for a price.) to bring military might to bear on Iran!

There is a third component that must be faced as a possible event in these days and that is the eviction of Islam from the property where their mosque is today, the Dome of the Rock, that sits on the ruins of the sacred Holy Temple built by the Jews so God would dwell with them in the “Holy” Land (41 He shall come into the glorious land. And tens of thousands shall fall, but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the main part of the Ammonites.).

What is remarkable to me and I’ve not heard much if any talk about what an abomination this must be to God having this Islamic structure there now?

We hear a lot of talk about Antiochus Epiphanes desecrating the Holy Temple a hundred plus years before Christ was born. We hear a lot about Matthew 24 and Jesus’ warnings about the abomination of desolation He prophesied about that occurred in 70a.d.:

Matthew 24:15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),

I sense that the political leaders of Israel these days are about to amaze the world with their brash behavior and cause the next major world conflagration to pour forth upon the world scene and cause possibly this to come about:

Ezekiel 38:1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 “Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him
3 and say, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.
4 And I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great host, all of them with buckler and shield, wielding swords.
    5 Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet;
6 Gomer and all his hordes; Beth-togarmah from the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes—many peoples are with you.
7 “Be ready and keep ready, you and all your hosts that are assembled about you, and be a guard for them.
8 After many days you will be mustered. In the latter years you will go against the land that is restored from war, the land whose people were gathered from many peoples upon the mountains of Israel, which had been a continual waste. Its people were brought out from the peoples and now dwell securely, all of them.
9 You will advance, coming on like a storm. You will be like a cloud covering the land, you and all your hordes, and many peoples with you.
10 “Thus says the Lord GOD: On that day, thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme
11 and say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will fall upon the quiet people who dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having no bars or gates,’
12 to seize spoil and carry off plunder, to turn your hand against the waste places that are now inhabited, and the people who were gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell at the center of the earth.

With that harken back to this verse from Luke:

Luke 2:14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

We can be confident of this that if we fight the good fight of Faith believing Nd holding firm to the Words God has promised we will know His Peace! Like the pithy saying says: “[know Peace or no peace]”!

Philippians 3:7 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.
8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—
10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,
14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.
16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

    • We see glimpses of the unseen and the invisible realities of both God, Angels and the Devil with the demons working in the world and among us in the ordinary course of our day!

Amen Michael, that we do. Without a doubt.

He shall make them rulers over many and shall divide the land for a price.) to bring military might to bear on Iran

I agree there will be no peace agreement.

As far as Iran, the Israeli PM seems set on war…nothing short of what he desires Iran to do, which i cannot see happening, will stop him from attacking Iran. His mind is set in stone.

What is remarkable to me and I’ve not heard much if any talk about what an abomination this must be to God having this Islamic structure there now?

From the Israeli religious leaders? I read items almost on a daily basis (at Israeli news sources) in which this is talked about, so it is in the news. What is amazing to me is ‘if’ this were to be removed/destroyed, and replaced with a temple, that too would be an abomination in the sight of God. But most people do not see this. People like Hal Lindsey have stated it would be “the greatest tourist attraction in the middle-east, ever!….that Christians would come from around the world in order to offer sacrifices”), and think it not only would be wonderful, but that it will be built, for as Lindsy states in one or more of his books, “God demands it!”

I sense that the political leaders of Israel these days are about to amaze the world with their brash behavior and cause the next major world conflagration to pour forth upon the world scene….

      Yes, i agree.

Will it lead to Ezekiel 38? That i don’t know Michael. Many bible scholars believe this was already fulfilled or that it will be fulfilled at the end of a/the millennial reign.

One main reason i question this as occurring now is because of the chapters which proceed…especially (think) chapter 36? Doesn’t this speak of a spiritual revival? This has definitely not occurred in the Israel of today.(i’ll look that chapter up after finishing my comment to be sure im correct).

But i certainly agree, Israel’s PM and leaders seem to be set on a course which will lead to all-out war in the ME. And perhaps it’s selfish of me, as a grandmother of 4 grandsons, all of age to be in the military, but i pray im wrong. Christians have harped over Obama’s election (twice) without ever giving one thought to the possibility of the reason God placed him in office was to (at least try) to keep us out of a ME war. Heck, if Bush would have still been in office, or someone else, they may have caved in to the obvious attempts by Netanyahu to drag us into bombing Iran. In fact i’d almost bet on it.

I’m going to check out Ezekiel 36…

  2. Prior to the scenario we read in chapter 38 we read in 36,

Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

29 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you.

30 And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen.

31 Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.

32 Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord God, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel.

33 Thus saith the Lord God; In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be builded.

34 And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by.

35 And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited.

36 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the Lord build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the Lord have spoken it, and I will do it.

37 Thus saith the Lord God; I will yet for this be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock.

38 As the holy flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts; so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men: and they shall know that I am the Lord.

Now, unless this was a prophetic word which was fulfilled during the time of the old testament Michael, and is in fact still to be fulfilled in the future, we know this has not occurred since 1948. Right?

  3. PJ

I believe those verses you cite from Ezekiel 36 began on the day of Pentecost and continue these days???

Here are the verses I link to what I’m pointing to in Ezekiel 38; these verses seem to me to be what is being considered around the world wherever you find a Jewish conclave:

Ezekiel 36: 16 The word of the LORD came to me:
17 “Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, they defiled it by their ways and their deeds. Their ways before me were like the uncleanness of a woman in her menstrual impurity.
18 So I poured out my wrath upon them for the blood that they had shed in the land, for the idols with which they had defiled it.
19 I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. In accordance with their ways and their deeds I judged them.
20 But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, ‘These are the people of the LORD, and yet they had to go out of his land.’
21 But I had concern for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations to which they came.
22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came.
23 And I will vindicate the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, and which you have profaned among them. And the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Lord GOD, when through you I vindicate my holiness before their eyes.
24 I will take you from the nations and gather you from all the countries and bring you into your own land.

I’ve done some traveling around the world to many countries. In those countries where I’ve been able to stay and get out and about to be with people, on the streets walking around and getting to know what kinds of business happens I run across Jews. Those verses seem I cite from Ezekiel 36to reflect what God is saying about them.

That of course is by the ignorant of the Truth of the Gospel by both the Jews who are living according to the Law and not according to the Gospel. Now, whether Jew or Gentile the only way for the curse Adam brought upon all living is the Gospel.

We still uphold the Law on moral grounds not religious!

Romans 3:30 since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.
31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

    • Michael i’ve heard two interpretations concerning Ezekiel 36–one, that it was fulfilled at the restoration after the Babylonian captivity and secondly, that it’s a future (spiritual and natural) restoration still to occur. I don’t believe i’ve ever heard it being related to Pentecost.

A few dispensationalist authors which i’ve read, have attempted to relate this chapter to modern day Israel, but in my opinion that cannot be. Mainly for the fact of there not being a spiritual renewal/awakening in Israel, nor was there one prior to the people coming back. I know that many believed strongly that this spiritual renewal or revival would occur prior to the people returning, (this was the belief prior to 1948), and because it wasn’t the case, many of those who had taught and preached this for years, (and wrote many books claiming this would be the case) were caught off-guard when the people (Jews) returned still in unbelief. They staunchly believed an external restoration must be preceded by an internal one.

I think this (the fact of the return not being preceded by an awakening) is why a number of Christians, including bible scholars, “question” the biblical legitimacy of modern day Israel. I know it’s sure made me wonder. From what i read, speaking of Ezekiel 36-39, these chapters can only mean one of two things: this was already fulfilled during the time after the Babylonian captivity or, the people living in Israel today will be dispersed again, experience a spiritual awakening and then (once again) return. The first seems more plausible.

  4. Correction to this sentence: “Now, whether Jew or Gentile the only way for the curse Adam brought upon all living is the Gospel.”

Now, whether Jew or Gentile, the only way to be freed from the curse Adam brought upon all living is the Gospel.

We are indeed heading to some end times. I’m hoping and praying things speed up and we see the end. I’ll see it one way or the other. But there is a generation will see the end as Peter wrote in 2 Peter 3!

Does the present brash behavior of Israel bring us closer and closer to the last day? Well I hope so!

    • Yes, we’re seeing something being set-up Michael. I believe by the end of this year we may have a good idea of what it is, if not before. Don’t you?

  5. PJ and Michael, I’ve enjoyed your discussion so far on Ezekiel 36-39. I just wanted to add that I recall we’ve looked in the past at Philip Mauro’s teaching on this subject in his book, “The Hope of Israel” (1822). Mauro first convinced me that Ezekiel 36-37, in particular blend together two different foretellings: [1] the soon-to-come destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of Babylon in 586 BC and the restoration to the land under Ezra, Nehemiah, and Zerubbabel some 70 years later [2] the coming glories of the new covenant age, through Christ, in which God’s people are given a new heart of flesh and a new spirit.

Mauro made this point more than once, but so far I’ve found one instance where he taught this:

“Certain prophecies of Ezekiel are sometimes cited as lending support to the idea of the future reconstitution and earthly dominion of the Jewish nation. But on the contrary, they contain many clear warnings of judgments to come upon the house of Israel and the city of Jerusalem ; and they also contain predictions not so clear perhaps as the threatened judgments, because they are capable, like other 0.T. prophecies, of being interpreted according to the desires of the carnal Jewish mind concerning the recovery that was to be accomplished through the work of the coming Redeemer.”

Source: http://www.preteristarchive.com/Books/pdf/1922_mauro_hope-of-israel.pdf (beginning of chapter 6)

    • Hi Adam, thanks for recalling Mauro’s take on these verses. I’d forgotten he’d written on these chapters. Your (much younger) mind has a better memory, aha!
