National director of the Anti-Defamation League rebukes John Hagee

From Religion Dispatches

At the Zionist Organization of America’s gala Sunday night, Republican megadonors Sheldon and Miriam Adelson bestowed an award on Christians United for Israel founder John Hagee. In his remarks, Hagee called President Barack Obama “the most anti-Semitic president ever.”

Chemi Shalev reports more details:

The other stars of the night were the ubiquitous Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and his wife Miriam, whose generous contributions to ZOA have helped lift the organization out of the doldrums and into the spotlight and the fast lane. [ZOA president Mort] Klein gave Adelson a gift mezuzah for his new Las Vegas home (in which “God himself would be happy to live if he could afford it”] then Miriam Adelson told the audience “how I fell in love” with Hagee “the most effective Christian Zionist in the world” and then Hagee described the Adelsons as “the greatest citizens of America.” And the crowd kvelled. – (Ted Cruz starred and Barack Obama was tarred in an evening of what used to called crazy talk but is increasingly mainstream in both Israel and the U.S.)

The extravagant accolades did not end there. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who also received an award, compared Klein, who has a speech impediment, to Moses. (But who’s most like Moses, really?) The next day, Cruz suggested a replacement for outgoing Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel: former Senator Joe Lieberman, “a member of the President’s own party with deep experience and unshakable commitment to the security of the United States.” Like the Adelsons, Lieberman has had a strong affection for Hagee, having once likened him to Moses, calling him a “man of God” and a “leader of a mighty multitude.”

But the world’s most visible arbiter of anti-Semitism had another view of Hagee’s comment about Obama at the ZOA gala. Yesterday, Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, said Hagee’s accusation that Obama is “the most anti-Semitic president ever” was “offensive and misplaced.”

In a statement, Foxman said,

“Anti-Semitic is a term that should never be used lightly, or applied to exact a political score or make a political point.” President Obama, Foxman added, “continues to be a staunch ally and friend of Israel and friend of the Jewish community. And while we and members of the Jewish community have not always seen eye-to-eye with this administration on certain issues involving the Jewish State, the fact remains that this administration has continued the strong and unwavering alliance with Israel.”

I reached out to CUFI’s spokesman for comment on Foxman’s statement late yesterday and will update this post with any response.

  1. Dear PJMiller, it concerns me so much that a pastor would call out someone as the ‘most anti-Semitic president ever”. It’s should be painful to the rest of the Body of Christ, and it must grieve the Holy Spirit. He could use other means and ways of showing his disapproval and disagreement with President Obama, and talk about the issues, but he PERSONALLY attacks the man, and makes a claim, which is false. What kind of Ambassador of Christ is this? This divides, is carnal, fleshly, and poses many people at risk of being targeted if they don’t agree, as they too, will be called anti-Semitic if they support this President. How does this help Jewish people?

He knows by saying this, that it results in people wanting to hate the American president, to irrationally fear him and to mischaracterize him. Is this a fruit of the Spirit?

Am so glad you are one of the few people who are bringing this awareness, because if no one speaks out, who is next on John Hagee’s list? What other person will be make false accusations against, so he can throw bouquets at multi-milionnaires and be thrown bouquets back at him and his political cronies? Is making such dangerous accusations and roasting another human being and agitating others to be repelled towards a man, who is not there to defend himself, from God or Satan? I think we know the answer.

It’s very disheartening. And it could soon happen to christians. People like Hagee who affliliate themselves with the very wealthy, put their trust in rich men and feel empowered to say anything they want, to the detriment of true christians.

    • It is very disheartening Marie, but not surprising coming from John Hagee, for he considers an anti-Semitic anyone who may not agree 100% with all actions taken by the Israeli government. Hagee is not alone in using this term wrongly in this manner, many other Christian Zionists do this as well. What tossing the term around and using it to attack someone who disagrees with an action the Israeli government takes, has resulted in delegitimizing the term–which has not helped the Jewish people. In fact it has had the opposite affect.

I was very glad to see Abraham Foxman had called him out for wrongly using the term and for pointing out the falseness of Hagee’s accusation. Those who consider themselves Christian leaders need to do the same, but i won’t be holding my breathe waiting for it to happen. There is an “unnatural” hatred (which i believe is satanic) expressed by many Christians against the current President. Over the years since he was first elected, it has not abated in the least, but grown in it’s intensity and boldness. It has brought shame upon the Church in the West. The world (the lost) has watched this manifest and i believe it has done a lot of damage to the spreading of the Gospel in this Nation.

    • Another article on the topic of Hagee’s anti-Semiticm slur against the President at Mondoweiss

Last Sunday night Texas senator Ted Cruz went to a Zionist Organization of America gala in New York at which Pastor John Hagee directly labelled President Obama “anti-Semitic.” Even the Anti-Defamation League condemned the remarks:

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today urged Pastor John Hagee to reconsider his remarks calling President Obama “one of the most anti-Semitic presidents in the history of the United States of America,” saying the comments were “offensive and misplaced.”

Home Depot chairman Bernard Marcus also did some namecalling of Obama, according to Haaretz (you have to read the Israeli press to find out what’s going on in US politics):

“A Chamberlain in the White House,” as Home Depot founder Bernie Marcus opined, garnering wild applause.

The Dallas Morning News did raise an eyebrow over the vitriol at the dinner:

When [ZOA President Morton] Klein called out the president by his full name — “Barack Hussein Obama” — and said “Shame on you” to Obama for failing to stand strongly enough with Israel, Cruz nodded and sipped water.

A big honoree of the dinner was Obama supporter Alan Dershowitz. Rightwing duo Sheldon (Obama should bomb Iran) Adelson and Rabbi Shmuley Boteach were there, the ZOA says, in a release titled “Zionism unites Cruz, Dershowitz,” as well as “Fox News television host Judge Jeannine Pirro, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN), former presidential candidate Gary Bauer, Middle East scholar Daniel Pipes, along with renowned businessmen and Jewish leaders Ken Bialkin, David Brog, Martin Gross, Jack Halpern, Irwin Hochberg, Ira Rennert, Richard Stone, Jim Tisch and Rabbi Avi Weiss.”

I can find nothing in the news coverage to show that Cruz and Dershowitz or anyone else walked out of Hagee’s speech or expressed disapproval……

So let’s get this clear. The Israel lobby transcends political party. Alan Dershowitz supported Obama, but he participates in a gala at which Obama is called an anti-Semite. Sheldon Adelson, who favors abortion, is flirting with rightwing anti-abortion Senator Ted Cruz. Shmuley Boteach can be friends with Adelson, who wants to bomb Iran, and also with Samantha Power, the US ambassador to the UN. Mort Zuckerman is a Democratic giver, sometimes, as is Michael Steinhardt– but they meet with the Tea Party senator; and no one in the Democratic Party is going to call these folks out. No, because these Israel supporters have a lot of power. Obama was cowed by them on Jerusalem. And the Israel supporters will cross party lines to find the biggest political backer of Israel. And it’s necessary that they cross party lines, to make sure the two major parties are on the same page, knit on this issue as on no other.

  2. I agree on the point that as a Pastor, and in the limelight, should be exhibiting fruits of the Spirit, show humility, meekness and gentleness towards everyone. I am not a fan of Mr. Hagee, I just pray for him to see the light and repent. He is too brash and arrogant, not good fruits of the Spirit. I’m not a fan of President Obama, but I do pray for him and his administration to do the right thing and be touched somehow by the Spirit of God.

  3. Thanks dear PJ for your response. IMO, The Church is in a time, where we are in the valley of decision. All these leaders have to decide who they’ll serve. I’m amazed at the number of christians all following these men like Hagee, or agreeing with and giving verbal support to radio personalities, like Limbaugh, and Bryan Fischer (who say unimaginable things), or others who claim they’re christians, yet share the stage with unrepentent rock stars, like Ted Nugent, or who rub elbows with the rich and fame-seeker real estate moguls, who say shocking and outlandish things, and who show no remorse for their nasty talk. We’ve heard pastors endorse men and women who speak wickedly about sinners, yet who appear so cold-hearted about the needy. We hear prophecy celebrities prophecy that certain righteous politicians will raise the U.S. and the Church to great power; and the worst thing that has been hard for me these past few years, is the lying. Lies pour out day after day. Pastors are pushing their flocks to vote; and vote for those who have no problem lying.

The lying and false accusations FROM THE CHURCH, not the world, but FROM THE CHURCH, our brethren, towards others, done in public, from the podiums, talk news studios, accusing, distorting, falsifying, exagerating, demoralizing, putting fear in our hearts, bragging, boasting, mocking, laughing while they say offensive things, etc. etc. etc. is almost too much for a saint to bear today. Just turn off the internet or tv or radio? That might work for a while, but the poisoned Church members are buying these lies, and the harm that’ll be done from believing those lies could persecute innocent christians. Our own brethren may betray their innocent brethren because we’re viewed as cowards because we don’t laugh at jokes, like
McCain statement, “Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran”. Just silence from the pastors on these type of statements. Our allegiance must be to the revered leaders no matter what. The State/Religion christians are watching the ‘cowardly’ christians (in their view cowardly, because they don’t harass homosexuals or liberals), and berate them in front of others, calling them weak-willed, soft, too apologetic, whimps, unpatriotic, etc. Was I the only one who was hurt to hear the son of Billy Graham, call out christians as cowards because they don’t defy sinners and atheists? It’s like we are witnessing a generation of christian leaders becoming militant and aggressive.

We know dictators in war-torn countries hate the weak also, and they do away with them as fast as they can. They might pull away any relief aid from them, like food and shelter, preferring to support a strong military. Dictators mock the poor, telling them if they don’t work, they don’t eat, like Congresswoman Bachmann so many times has quoted. A christian woman quoting bible verses intended to brush off the needy and chastise the mentally-ill, unemployed, poor is so contrary to what the Bible teaches. It’s bad enough for a christian to show ignorance and mock the poor, but to add a bible verse to their apathy towards other human beings, well, I am pretty certain we are in the last of the last days, considering christians abroad are being persecuted for their faith and are neglected for their faith, yet complain less than our christian representatives here in the West.

So sorry PJM this is long, it’s just something that I need to get off my chest. No one agrees, and I may be misinterpreting things, but where are the shepherds who steer us on the right path? There are a few, but, they are ignored. What does it take to get their attention that the wolves in sheep’s clothing and vultures have taken over the Church? The sands are shifting, Matthew chapter 24 is being witnessed, the earth is groaning and shaking, and the Church is preoccupied with dominating and empowerment and tempted by greed and excess and military prowess and taking Israel for themselves. Will we see an American leader stand in the gap for Israel or stand in the Holy of Holies, declaring himself to be God?

This has been on my mind too a lot lately. We would be wise to get good counsel from christians from China and anti-christian countries; they should be our pastors.

    • Marie, im glad to read someone else “voice” these concerns. Everything you wrote have been my own thoughts for some time now.

You mentioned China: i recall reading a letter some years back which told of how the Church in China (and the underground Church in other persecuted Countries) prays for us–the Church in the West. they are and have been, deeply concerned with what they see happening here in the body of Christ. I was moved to tears to realize the persecuted Church PRAYS FOR US! Why, because they believe we need persecution in order to emerge from the apostate condition we’re in.

Where are the Godly Spirit filled leaders in the West? I don’t see them nor hear them speaking out unless it’s on the topic of homosexuality, “taking the nation” back for God, or concerning some other similar topic. We have no true Spirit-led leaders today. But i do take heart and strength in knowing there are true voices calling the Church back to repentance, prayer, and encouraging a Holy life lived for Christ; but these voices/calls are not coming from those who profess to speak for the Church, no, they are coming from the remnant, and are speaking to the remnant Marie.

I thank you for voicing your deep concerns. Really. For they are my concerns as well.
