“If The Foundations Be Destroyed…?”

While there are any number of messages I’ve encouraged readers here to listen to and/or read, all of them excellent, this is one I have no problem with saying is truly prophetic. Sensing this in my spirit as strongly as I do, friends I do encourage you to read the intro and listen to this message, for it is a true word for the Church today.

quotes (from the introduction)

downloadIf the roof is blown off of your house in a tornado, it will cause you trouble, grief, and expense. But there is no cause for despair. If one of the walls of this building were to be torn off in a storm, it would require our time, labor, and money to replace it. But it could be replaced soon enough. Indeed, we once saw building collapse, like a pile of toothpicks, during a winter storm. It was a frustrating and costly ordeal. But soon the walls were again raised. However, if by some terrible earthquake, the foundations of the building were broken up and destroyed, then all would be hopelessly lost and ruined.

This was the fear David expressed in our text. Perhaps this Psalm was written during the time of Abaslom’s rebellion. I don’t know. But David was experiencing some very terrible ordeal which caused him to fear, not for himself, but for the nation and for the people of God. It appeared to this servant of God that the very foundations of the kingdom were trembling. And he cries out to God, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

I want us to meditate for a little while tonight upon this question. We are living in troublesome times. Any rational, reasonable man is concerned about the problems facing our nation, and the world at large. The world’s economic system appears to be on the verge of total collapse. We have modern, sophisticated weapons of war which could annihilate nations in only a few moments of time. And there are areas of the world so tense that a third world war could break out at anytime.

Moreover, some of you have personal, domestic trials and difficulties which appear, in your own eyes, to be as great as the trials of the world at large.

And the greatest evils of this age are to be found in the religious world. Spiritual wickedness abounds everywhere. Heresy abounds in the professed church of God. Therefore wickedness abounds in the streets. What the end of these things shall be I simply do not know.

But just suppose that the most fearful tragedy you ever imagined were to actually come to pass. What would you do? What could you do? This is the fearful apprehension David had formed in his mind. And he cries out to God, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

Let me briefly point out some foundations which are sure to decay….

  1. The foundation of every CIVIL GOVERNMENT will, sooner or later, be destroyed.

No nation under the sun will stand forever. Neither America, nor England, nor Israel is invincible. Neither the free nations of the world nor the communist nations are God’s representatives in this world.

I am no pessimist. But I try to face things as they really are. I am a true blooded American, loyal to the core. But I am afraid the signs of decay are evident in our land.

  1. Justice is perverted.
  2. The laws of the land are a farce.
  3. And the moral fabric of our nation is being eroded by those who ought to be building it up. Men call good evil and evil good, and really do not know the difference.

  1. The foundation of FINANCIAL AND ECONOMIC SECURITY may be destroyed very rapidly.

Whether you talk about the nation or an individual family, economic stability would be a great blessing. But economic security is an impossibility.

  1. I have often seen the foundation of TRUST BETWEEN FRIENDS crumble.

David experienced this. Our Lord experienced it. Paul experienced it. I have known its pain. And you will experience it too.

  1. The foundation of DOMESTIC TRANQUILLITY and family happiness, at best, will only endure for a while.

  1. The rebellion of a son, or the waywardness of a daughter, will bring a loving father or tender mother terrible grief.

Pray you will complete reading the introduction and listen to the audio message at For The Love of His Truth: “If The Foundations Be Destroyed…?”

  1. This is very interesting! It so happens I have been studying this very same topic over the past week or so. I’ve been studying the scriptures on God’s providence, and reading Calvin’s Institutes on the same topic (though painfully slowly). On a forum I frequent, the topic also came up (it never does) and I gave a lengthy response to it based on what I had learned from Calvin. And then, today, I saw a picture on facebook which had the verse: ““It is the Lord, let him do what he will.” It had a picture of a sick fellow. Interestingly, this blog post you have shared with us also had this quote, and says this:

“When great trouble comes, let us seek to honor God like Eli of old, saying, “It is the Lord, let him do what he will.” Whatever comes to pass is brought to pass by our heavenly Father.”

Isn’t it interesting that this theme keeps coming up over and over again?

    • Hi Ricardo, yes interesting. Many of the things pointed to and at in this message have also been on my heart lately as well. I believe when the Spirit of God is trying to get our attention, we will find “markers” (such as you have been experiencing) pointing us to what God is saying to the Church.

You’ve come here for quite a few years and know i have rarely (if ever) claimed something i’ve posted as being prophetic. This, if im not mistaken, is the first time i’ve done so. In this instance i felt compelled to say this is a true word from God…..for us today. Not only are many of the points made been on y heart, but i know they have similarly been on the heart of others i’ve spoken with.

I plan on listening to this message (from pastor Don Fortner) again. I want to be prepared Ricardo….for whatever God is bringing (or going to permit) to come our way soon. And i do think it will be soon. For when it happens we must be strong and say, as you quoted Eli, “It is the Lord, let him do what he will.”
