British Ally of Oral Roberts and Earl Paulk Resigns over Adultery

And we wonder why the Church has problems reaching the lost. I want to warn you that there are statements in this story, quotes by this man who claimed Christ, which may be offensive. They offended me as a Christian and a caring human being. Sadly, I see this same type of attitude coming from many in Christian circles today. It can only be a fulfillment of the warning Jesus gave in Matthew 24: “And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold”.

Have you ever noticed when people who claim Christianity begin to show hatred for any group, they usually end up falling into open sin at some point? I have…

From TalkToAction:

Northern Ireland, British evangelicalism tends to be politically centrist and wary of authoritarian leaders. However, Michael Reid and his Peniel Church in Brentwood, Essex, are an exception. Reid – a former policeman – is more like a US “Christian Right” figure, until recently heading a “Christian Congress for Traditional Values” (CCTV) and dispensing views such as these:

…gays are “filthy perverts”; Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists are variously described in videoed sermons as “vile” and “foul heathens”. Christians who do not work, Reid said in one recording, should be allowed to starve. He believes in capital punishment, and he would pull the trigger himself; lethal injection is too good for them, he says in one church video.

Reid, who has close links with Oral Roberts and Earl Paulk, has now resigned his position after admitting an affair.

British Christian website Premier reports:

A well known Pentecostal church leader has resigned after admitting he’s had an affair….In a statement Bishop Reid said:

“It is with great sorrow and regret that I have resigned from the church board and have stepped down from official duties. I confess that I have sinned by committing adultery. I recognize that I have failed in my duties and acted in a way that harmed the Church. I take full responsibility for my actions and so I resigned. I apologize to my wife and family and all of you whose trust I have betrayed and ask for your forgiveness and prayers.”

The websites of Michael Reid Ministries and of the Christian Congress for Traditional Values are both currently down, replaced by a brief contacts page.

Reid has been a controversial figure for some years: ex-members of his church have complained of authoritarianism (although be careful: he’s been known to sue over the “cult” label), and in the 1990s his church tried to derail a critical television documentary through a bizarre scheme which involved hiring an actor to approach the documentary-makers with the story that he (the actor) was an intelligence agent and that the programme should not be made for reasons of national security (I blogged on this here). A few years after that, there was further bad publicity when members of the church were accused of joining the local Conservative Party en masse in order to back the local MP, Eric Pickles, against rivals in the party (Pickles is a former Tory centrist “wet” who moved to the right during the 1980s).

A British anti-censorship blog, MediaWatchWatch, recalls that

The CCTV has been providing us here at MWW with pleasingly whacky Christian fodder since its inception in March 2005. But they really showed their hateful side with their Gay Aim: Abolish the Family campaign which included posters and a video.

Thanks to Google Books, we’re able to see these pictures from Reid’s book Faith: It’s God Given (2002):

Reid’s admission is another blow to the International Communion of Charismatic Churches; former presiding Bishop Earl Paulk was last year engulfed in numerous sex scandals, including allegations of sexual abuse. Richard Roberts, meanwhile, was recently forced to resign from the presidency of Oral Roberts University over claims of financial mismanagement.

  1. This kind of thing will happen again and again and again. I would like to see the people who were happy to be allied with Reid when he was making headlines of a less hypocritical nature, held to some level of accountability for allowing this rogue preacher to spin so badly out of control.

  2. Hi Simon..

I agree these things happen regularly any more.

Accountability is the word. Over the past 30 years, within the Church, accountability has become a dirty word. Because its been ignored, many of these Church leaders have grown powerful not only in Christian circles but in political circles as well. To be frank i think people, including other Christian leaders, grow to fear speaking out against them or any of their actions because of the power they weld.

  3. Well, at least he stepped down…

I also have noticed that ministers who are living in habitual sin tend to become very controlling and authoritarian before they fall. Perhaps it is because they feel so convicted that they know they are about to lose everything and try to compensate by becoming controlling.

  4. Michael Reid was and is a common type of ‘Christian’ leader who due to charisma draws a number of followers after himself usually resulting in many damaged lives after a few years. His story could be repeated many times over in British Evangelicalism – its time for so called Evangelical Orthodoxy to have a fresh look at the nature of leadership as expounded by Jesus and not to get boxed into some heirarchical power structure that clever or misguided men teach from a twisted view of St. Paul’s ideas on christian community.I would recommend a book by Frank Viola called ‘Pagan Christianity’ as an insightful look at how we have ended up with these often abusive leadership structures within Chrisendon.By the way I speak as one who has been through a church like Peniel with a leader very similar to Michael Reid who also fell into adultery.

  5. Yes…i think its pride which overtakes them Roy. They see themselves ‘above’ the scriptures.

God is long-suffering..and because most of these people (both men and women ministers) who have secret hidden sins in their lives, and don’t have them revealed by God right away, they settle into the false belief they have escaped or avoided judgment.

  6. Charlie if these guys were held to be accountable from the beginning of their ministries, the power [over people] they acquire could be held in check…don’t you think?

By the way, i have read portions of Frank Viola’s ‘Pagan Christianity’…its excellent!

  7. Despite the admittance of an 8 year adulterous affair, during which reid was vociferous with his attacks on immorality, gay sex and gay rights, together with preaching morality and family values (sic), reid is expected to take control of peniel again in the near future.
He brings a new meaning to the word ‘hypocricy’

  8. If he does, it won’t really surprise me. Not in the world of Christianity 2008 when anything ‘goes’…

It also didn’t surprise me one ‘wit’ that he fled to America when the story broke: where-else BUT the USA, where the likes of those just like him still stand behind pulpits every week, unrepentant, ignoring sin, would he fit right in?!

I hope the people of Essex rise up in protest if he does return…

  9. i think genuine christians should fall on their knees and pray against this dangerous trend in the church world. the enemy is using this reports to attack the church. for the offenders, they need prayers to bounce back, i believe God has forgiven them. he who has no sin should cast the first stone.

  10. i think what,we the minister of God suppose to be doing to take care of the widows and elderly, and preparing there mind for the second coming of jesus christ to help the poor, going to villages which am doing for now we need your prayer and assistance.fairly use clothes, food and sheltered them. And i pray for your ministry, holy spirit will continue to take control………

  11. Amen Rev. Samson, amen!

Send me a personal note through my contact page [its at the top] about your work, ok?

    God bless…
