Grave sucking or mantle grabbing

HT to Steve at Apostasy Watch for this story. Was odd to come across this today, shortly after the passing of Bob Jones, for I had thought just yesterday that someone would be coming out soon claiming to have received “Bob’s mantle”.  Still think it will probably happen…

Wish I could say this was the first I’d heard of this, but it isn’t.

When I first heard of grave sucking I assumed it must be a joke. Surely no one would buy into something so silly. Well my friends, this is for real. Grave sucking or mantle grabbing is the belief and practice of pulling the supposed Holy Spirit powers from the dead bones of a previously empowered believer. It is taught that when a Spirit empowered individual dies their mantle or mission dies with them. In other words God’s mission for that believer was thwarted when that believer died.

“There are anointings, mantles, revelations and mysteries that have lain unclaimed, literally where they were left because the generation that walked in them never passed them on. I believe it’s possible for us to recover realms of anointing, realms of insight, realms of God that have been untended for decades simply by choosing to reclaim them and perpetuate them for future generations.” Bill Johnson

Maybe that believer had a gift of healing. Maybe they were an apostle, prophet or evangelist. This of course assumes that they were actually empowered in these ways which I have serious doubts. Whatever the case, now God’s plans for that particular anointing are placed on hold. How does God correct this and get his plans back on track?

Grave sucking explained

We as believers must find a way to retrieve the mantle or anointing from the rotting corpse six feet under. Only then can we get God’s plans back on track. This is achieved by placing our hands on the gravestone of the deceased or lying on top of the grave. Sometimes a prayer will be offered to God to aid in this perceived power transfer.

I kid you not! Some people actually believe this. God’s plan has in fact been frustrated and now God needs us to seek out His lost anointing so we can bale God and His plans out. They believe that by laying there on the grave they will be able to pull the anointing from the dead. It’s as if they believe the Holy Spirit is lost and doesn’t seem to realize that the person they empowered is dead and is no longer able to minister in this empowered way. Suddenly the Holy Spirit senses someone is lying on the dirt six feet above His head. The Holy Spirit, apparently not caring who is laying up there decides to jump into the new body giving them the supernatural abilities that the dearly departed once had. Again this assumes that the person in the grave was in fact empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Bene Hinn Claims he Felt the Anointing at Mystic Aimee Semple McPherson’s Grave

I felt a terrific anointing when I was there. I actually, I—I, hear this, I trembled when I visited Aimee’s tomb. I was shaking all over. God’s power came all over me. … I believe the anointing has lingered over Aimee’s body. I know this may be shocking to you. … And I’m going to take David [Palmquist] and Kent [Mattox] and Sheryl [Palmquist] this week. They’re gonna come with me. You—you—you gonna feel the anointing at Aimee’s tomb. It’s incredible. And Kathryn’s. It’s amazing. I’ve heard of people healed when they visited that tomb. They were totally healed by God’s power. You say, ‘What a crazy thing.’ Brother, there’s things we’ll never understand. Are you all hearing me?” – Bene Hinn

For many who subscribe to hyper-charismatic type beliefs, it is thought that a person must spend much time and effort trying to achieved a state of Holy Spirit empowerment. This is achieved by extensive prayer, worship, contemplative prayer, soaking, fasting and much more. Mantle grabbing/grave sucking is seen as the workaround to achieving fast Holy Spirit empowerment.

More here-and check out photos of people actually lying on graves. Truly a case of ‘nuts on parade’.

  1. Bethel Church Soaking up the “anointing” of dead men

    • Ugh…this is simply bizarre and it’s like a mix of necromancy and witchcraft. The mainstream church (not saved people but masquerading as Christians), is stooping to depths that our fathers would have wept over. What’s next?

BTW, did you hear about the statue of the virgin Mary crying tears of oil over in Jerusalem.

    • I did read about that (the weeping statue). What surprised me were the visitors it was attracting. Somewhere else, yes, but i was surprised at the Israelis who went to check it out. Don’t think i’ve ever read of anything like this happening in Israel before.

    • Quite honestly there is a lot about this that is good and encouraging. It is just so unfortunate that it contains just enough poison to be dangerous. It is a subtle undercurrent of a faith based on witchcraft rather than sound doctrine.

    Bill Johnson and friends…again!

  5. “The Holy Spirit, apparently not caring who is laying up there decides to jump into the new body giving them the supernatural abilities that the dearly departed once had. Again this assumes that the person in the grave was in fact empowered by the Holy Spirit.”

Well, I can certainly believe there might be OTHER spirits lying around six feet under just waiting for an opportunity to show up. But then, neither Benny Hinn nor Bill Johnson are the kind that allow sound doctrine to get in their way when the “spirit” is “moving”.

  6. This practice seems more occultic than Christian. You wonder about Christian discernment among these people…

  7. Reblogged this on For Such A Time As This and commented:
I had never heard of this before today…absolutely insane. Sounds like witchcraft to me.

  8. Never heard of this before today. Sounds like witchcraft to me.

  9. You find the most astonishing things to report. Why not just call on the dead? Have a seance? Get out the ouija board? Eesh!

    • Yes, might as well Micey, as was pointed out, it’s witchcraft or/and satanic practices.

This isn’t the first time i’ve heard of this. John Crowder and his group have been putting up videos at youtube about this practice for at least the last few years.

  10. Ha! Well dead corpses aye? When at the reservation, I’m Pomo Indian of a Northern Californian Tribe, with my dad I saw the dog chasing the chickens! It unnerved me so I protested to my dad. He calmly told me not to worry but keep an eye out so if that dog killed a chicken he’d teach the dog never to kill a chicken again. I was a little boy. I asked how? He said he’d tie the dead chicken on the dog’s neck in such a way that it wouldn’t be possible for the dog to remove it. The only way the dead chicken would come off the dog is rot off! He said the dog would never chase let alone kill a chicken ever again!

That to me seems like the best use for a dead corpse? What do you think?

One time in Scripture the body of the a young dead man is thrown into the tomb of a dead prophet and when he touches his bones he comes to life! One time and one time only! There are things that happened only once in Scripture and then there are things that happened a multitude of times. It’s those things that happen repeatedly that we are to follow because these are the things God wants repeated; like preach the Gospel to every creature for a witness then the end shall come!!

Jesus said a sinful and adulterous generation seeks after a sign and there’s only one sign that is to be given, repeatedly and that is the story of how Christ died for the sins of His people, was then buried in another man’s tomb and was raised up the third day so that hearing this Gospel again and again and again repeatedly His people would be saved!

Those people in the video are vain glory seekers wanting to draw attention to their exploits and nuance. Watching the video I didn’t hear anything about God’s Glory, did you? Maybe I missed something?

    What’s wrong with these verses?:

Philippians 3:17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.
18 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.
19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.
20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

    Or God doing this:

1 Peter 5:10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

By the way where in Sceipture does it teach to go to graves to get an anointing? Seems to me hanging around tombs and graves is what demon possessed people do:

Mark 5:1 They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.
2 And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.

Michael, i seem to recall there was a time (and place) in which people were punished in this same manner. Perhaps someone else might recall?

The punishment (for murder? can’t recall) was the dead body was tied to the perpetrator and he was forced to drag/carry it around while it slowly decayed.

    • These guys always make reference to scripture in order to validate their practices, but they ALWAYS manage to find a way to pull the scripture reference out of context when doing so. Have people had genuine miraculous experiences through encounters with the dead saints? Personally, I don’t doubt it. But in every case that I know of, those who have experienced that sort of thing weren’t seeking it out. It is the circus/freak show aspect of this whole thing that is so disturbing. It is indeed all a parallel to the “weeping virgin” sideshow that The Master’s Slave makes reference to. It is NOT a case of humble penitents seeking Christ, but of proud pharisees seeking a spiritual joyride. And that is so totally out of context from scripture it can only come from the dark side.

    • True George.

I could be wrong, but i cannot recall ever hearing or reading of a supernatural (miraculous) experience occurring (that i believed was real) that was being sought after at the time it occurred….can you? Going by my own life, the few times i can say something truly supernatural…of God…occurred, i was certainly not looking for it! Every time, it always took me by surprise.

It is the circus/freak show aspect of this whole thing that is so disturbing.

      Amen.

    • I feel so sorry for the Holy Spirit, laying around in a rotting corpse…my goodness! Someone needs to rescue Him from that dirt and rottenness!

I guess the gov’t is doing its job…can people possibly be dumber? I hate to see where this leads.

    • Kind of scares me to think of what else it might lead to—next thing we’ll hear is they’re digging them up!

    • Maybe their clothes have a special anointing? Imagine when Kenneth Copeland passes away to his reward?

    • O my! don’t get me started, ahaha!!

    • Maybe Ken will want to be buried in his leer jet? Gloria will have to have a closed casket though, I don’t think all of those face-lifts will last long after death…but her “hair” will.

  11. At the time when the Epistle to the Romans was written a murderer was punished in a peculiar and terrible manner. The dead body of the one murdered was tied to the living body of the murderer, head to head, hand to hand, foot to foot, and the living one was bound to the dead one till death. The murderer could go where he pleased, but wherever he went he had to carry the corpse of that murdered man with him. Could punishment be more appalling?

Yet this is the illustration Paul now uses. It is as though he were bound to a dead body and unable to get free. Wherever he goes he is hampered by this terrible burden. At last he can bear it no longer and cries: “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me…?” And then, in a flash of illumination, his cry of despair changes to a song of praise. He has found the answer to his question. “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom. 7:25).

  12. Luke 24:49
And behold , I send the promise of my Father upon you; but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem , until ye be endued with power from on high.

How should one know that what is on display here is so sickeningly false, the power of the Holy Spirit is given from God, and not from idolizing the dead[physical and spiritual].This is absolutely appalling, and I disagree with a previous comment that there is some good in this , it is all rotten to the core.

  13. All kidding aside, this is sickening. Once that psychological barrier is passed, there’s no telling where this will lead. Just something to chew on, but I could see these nuts laying hands on someone they worship and the devil reanimate him/her through demonic power. Just thinking along their lines and what possibly could be next on the plate.

Can it get any worse? Let’s hope not.

    • Actually, im at the point when nothing would surprise me…though guess i should be careful saying that; Every time i do, something so unexpected occurs and im still able to be shocked.

    • Didn’t ancient civilizations do something like this in order to obtain a person’s powers? Such as eat their heart? Or cut off their head…is this any different? I am really looking forward to the future with trepidation and curiosity. What could possible be next?😦

  14. This is what happens when Bill Johnsons of the world chase after the sensational and they tell their followers not to rely on “head knowledge”. Discernment, in other words, is the missing factor. Wonder if my former church has started this.

    • You bring up a good point about head knowledge or what i refer to as common sense or even logic.

      I understand that

“faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

And we do walk by faith. There are even times we step out by faith! But i don’t believe this means that plain old logic or common sense (head knowledge) is suppose to be thrown out the window. Many of these folks, like Johnson, act like if they heard a voice telling them to jump off a 12 story building, they’d do it–or expect their followers to do it. They never add common sense to their equation. This is part of discernment also!

  16. it was decreed in the Roman republiic from 100 BC to about 240 AD that all convicted murderers would carry around theirr victims body lashed to thier back , with the corpse slowly rotting in the hot sun and the worms eating slowly into theirr back , most were driven insane and willingly jumped off the Tarpeian rock, not a quick way of dying .
