Christian Zionism in America: CUFI Claims Over a Million Members

Quote…

Pastor John Hagee…recently boasted that his Christian Zionist organization, Christians United for Israel (CUFI), had passed the one million member mark.

“Six years ago Prime Minister Netanyahu asked me if we could unite Christians in support of Israel. I told him I didn’t know. Having reached 1 million members, I think the answer is clear. America’s Christians are uniting in support of Israel,” Hagee said at a CUFI meeting in Israel that featured Netanyahu.

“We are witnessing a dramatic transformation in the relationship between Christians and Jews, who are focusing now on the common values and the common future we both share,” Netanyahu said. “And these shared values set Israel apart from regimes like Syria that butchers its own people mercilessly. And from countries like Iran, whose leaders foment terrorism and violence around the globe and all for our destruction,” he said. “I think I don’t have to explain to you why this [Iranian] regime must never be allowed to have nuclear weapons,” he said.

Netanyahu also pointed out that Christians are free to practice their religion in Israel:

“At a time when Christians are under siege in so many places and so many lands in the Middle East, I’m proud that in Israel, they are free to practice their faith,” he said. “They don’t have to fear, they don’t have to flee.”

At the Jerusalem meeting, CUFI executive director David Brog pointed out that “With Iran steadily progressing towards a nuclear weapon, and Palestinian terrorists once again reminding the world that they are more concerned with destroying Israel than making peace, I believe that the news of our having crossed the million member threshold could not have come at a more critical juncture. Our first million members is a solid start, but we’ve only just begun.”

According to the Jerusalem Post, CUFI’s executive director David Brog “sought to dispel concerns about negative theological motivations attributed by some to the Evangelical movement. He labeled the claim that Evangelicals support Israel in order to herald the return of Jesus and the conversion of Jews as `complete and utter nonsense,’ and said such claims were based on `ignorance.’

“Instead, he said, Evangelicals support Israel because of a literalist interpretation of the Bible that views the promises made to the people of Israel as still intact – as opposed to `Replacement Theology,’ which is widely held by many other Christian denominations and posits that the Christian Church inherited the biblical promises to the Jewish people.”

The ingathering of Jews in Israel is considered a prerequisite to the 1000-year reign of Jesus in the end times. Christian Zionists view themselves as `fishers’ who must befriend and persuade Jews to move to Israel before the `time of the hunters.’ Hunters are those who will violently force the remaining Jews around the world to leave their respective nations and flee to Israel. October 2009: How “Christian” is Christian Zionism? (reposted quotes)

Since Stephen Strang of Charisma Magazine, joined up with John Hagee and the CUFI organization this year, its been interesting to read some of the articles Charisma posts in their new Standing With Israel section. Not all of the articles are written by Christians, such as this one, (Who Crucified Zion?) written by David Brog, who is the executive director of John Hagee’s “Christians United For Israel” (CUFI). Brog, himself an American Jew, has never accepted Jesus as Messiah, but works along-side Hagee to promote political and financial support for Israel, from among American Evangelicals.

From an interview with CUFI’s David Brog:

Which Christians in the U.S. are most Zionist and why?

“The evangelicals. No contest. Their Zionism comes directly from their theology.”

Was there an event that made this alliance stronger? Has it always been under the radar?

“Evangelical Christians largely shunned politics until the late 1970s, when Jerry Falwell created the Moral Majority and led them back onto the political playing field. Israel was among the priorities of the Christian Right from the start. In fact, when Jerry Falwell founded the Moral Majority he made support for Israel one of the group’s four organizing principles along with the issue of abortion, traditional marriage, and a strong U.S. defense.”

Concerning Converting Jews to Christ

“The important question is this: Is evangelical support for Israel merely a tool in the effort to convert the Jews? Is this merely some scheme to soften the Jews up so that they can better sell Jesus to them? And the answer to this question is absolutely not. If anything, the opposite it true. I and others who have worked with Christians in support of Israel all report that no one has ever tried to convert us. In fact, Christians who support Israel tend to know more Jews and to understand their sensitivities better than Christians who do not. Thus, they have learned that Jews find “Jesus talk” offensive, and they tend to leave it out of the dialogue.”

The executive director of  “Christians United For Israel” (CUFI) in an interview with Washington Jewish Week,

“Brog said the group (CUFI) tells people, ‘If you cannot put aside your desire to share the Gospel with Jews, there’s the door’” (Eric Fingerhut, “Educating on Evangelicals.” Washington Jewish Week. July 4, 2007).

My guess is that many who support these groups genuinely believe in Jewish evangelism and expect that their support will help Jewish people come to Christ. Sadly, their resources are going to projects run by people who are committed to preventing Jewish people from hearing about Jesus.

..please consider this: When someone makes an appeal for Christians to show their love for Jewish people, please remember that our love is incomplete at best and misleading at worst if it does not point beyond ourselves and to the One who loved us so much that He sent His Son to die, so that WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM will not perish, but have eternal life.”  (Jews for Jesus, How “Christian” is Christian Zionism)

  1. I believe these words taken from that quote above is the catch all frame of reference in light of just how mercilessly they went at Jesus and the first Apostles? If they did to them, be sure of this, they will do it even more so now! There have been many more martyred for the Faith since then. Jesus Himself said some things that were quite disturbing, too.

    First P.M.Netanyahu then Jesus:

“…And these shared values set Israel apart from regimes like Syria that butchers its own people mercilessly.”

Mat 23:24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!
Mat 23:25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
Mat 23:26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.
Mat 23:27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.
Mat 23:28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Mat 23:29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,
Mat 23:30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’
Mat 23:31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.
Mat 23:32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.
Mat 23:33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?
Mat 23:34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,
Mat 23:35 so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
Mat 23:36 Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
Mat 23:37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!
Mat 23:38 See, your house is left to you desolate.
Mat 23:39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'”

I can’t say to much about all that, except to say that I agree with Isaiah the Prophet that what he saw we shall all see in our own land, town, city, state and nation because the Gospel of the Kingdom is so much bigger in experience than just experiencing it in that one place called earthly Jerusalem. What Isaiah saw, he saw for that earthly realm. However, what he saw casts a larger shadow over the whole earth so that at the end of days and time as we know it not only will that place be burned up and be no more, so will all the earth as well:

Isa 6:1 In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.
Isa 6:2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
Isa 6:3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”
Isa 6:4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke.
Isa 6:5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!”
Isa 6:6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar.
Isa 6:7 And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
Isa 6:8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
Isa 6:9 And he said, “Go, and say to this people: “‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
Isa 6:10 Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”
Isa 6:11 Then I said, “How long, O Lord?” And he said: “Until cities lie waste without inhabitant, and houses without people, and the land is a desolate waste,
Isa 6:12 and the LORD removes people far away, and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
Isa 6:13 And though a tenth remain in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak, whose stump remains when it is felled.” The holy seed is its stump.

If the “Seed” is Holy, the “Seed’s” fruit will be just as Holy, Holy, Holy!!!

Heb 12:14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

What I am saying in no way excuses with is going on around the world by wicked vicious tyrants who are butchering their people and others by decree and force of arms!

  2. “We are witnessing a dramatic transformation in the relationship between Christians and Jews, who are focusing now on the common values and the common future we both share,” Netanyahu said.

I wonder if Netanyahu realizes that, from Hagee’s perspective, that common future is the world’s Jewish population suffering through a seven-year tribulation that will end in most of them being slaughtered, immediately after Hagee and his buddies are raptured to heaven.

    • Except that Hagee believes that Jews do jot “need” Jesus or His blood sacrifice and that ALL Jews WILL BE SAVED. Period. Dot. And THAT’s the end of that story.

  3. I don’t think I realized before seeing this post that CUFI came into existence due to the personal request of Prime Minister Netanyahu. I could be wrong, but I thought that Hagee had claimed elsewhere that God Himself had led/directed him to start CUFI.

Based on what I’ve read from Voice of the Martyrs and other sources, there are plenty of Christians (including some Jewish believers living in Israel) who could dispute Neyanyahu’s claim that Israeli Christians are free to practice their faith and have nothing to fear.

Well, I’m more convinced than ever that followers of Christ should receive spiritual instruction and Scriptural clarification from David Brog and others like him. Sarcasm intended… 🙂

    • Hi Adam 🙂

According to Hagee he became a Zionist in 1978,

“I went to Israel in 1978 as a tourist with a group of people from my church and I came home a Zionist,” Weekly Standard

But you’re right, it does appear that CUFI came into existence 6 years ago, after Netanyahu’s request.

Based on what I’ve read from Voice of the Martyrs and other sources, there are plenty of Christians (including some Jewish believers living in Israel) who could dispute Neyanyahu’s claim that Israeli Christians are free to practice their faith and have nothing to fear.

Amen. I’m glad you pointed that out. I was waiting to see if anyone would. There have been news items posted here at the blog which dispute Netanyahu’s claim. Many Israeli Jewish believers in Jesus are consistently harassed.

Well, I’m more convinced than ever that followers of Christ should receive spiritual instruction and Scriptural clarification from David Brog and others like him. Sarcasm intended…

Aha! I’m betting many if not most Christians who claim membership in CUFI are not even aware that Brog is an unbeliever.

    • Hey Adam,
Didn’t you publish an article after you attended a CUFI event? If it’s the one I’m thinking of, i have quoted it numerous times!
      Pam Caylor

    • Hi Pam,

Yes, I did publish an article after attending a CUFI event (in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area). Here it is:

      http://kloposmasm.com/2010/05/23/a-night-to-honor-israel-and-to-dishonor-jesus-and-his-church/

    • Thanks Adam 🙂

    • Hi PJ. You’re welcome. By the way, I know it’s been a while again since I dropped by at your site (or at least left a comment), but I have a couple dozen or more of your articles open in different tabs still waiting for me to catch up on them and read them. (My wife teases me about all my open tabs.) I’m glad to see you’re posting again on a regular basis after being away for a month a little while back. Blessings to you.

    • Its always a true pleasure to hear from you Adam.

Blessings to you and your beautiful wife too brother 🙂

  4. Hi
if you go to 8.09 on Hagee states “we came up with the idea of cufi…”. If that “we” had included Netanyahu you would have thought he would have mentioned it in this interview.

  5. There was a CUFI Org BEFORE Hagee’s …
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christians_United_for_Israel

Glad to see others writing about this …
Hagee has been saying for 25 years that “Jesus Is not the Messiah; that Jesus did not come to earth to BE the messiah; & that He denied by word & deed to BE the Messiah” … I got a copy of his 1987 book, “Should Christians Support Israel?”
Chapter 10 of his 2007 original (NOT the “Updatedc& Revise Edition) book, “In Defense of Israel” (the chapter that caused such an uproar), is basically a paste & cut of about 70 percent of his 1987 book ….
